Lawrence Bru county superintendent announces the annual county spelling contest finals will be held December 7 at 10 AM in Mt Carroll. Winners from rural and elementary preliminaries advance to the county finals with written tests. First place earns a gold medal and state eligibility.
Freeport superintendent B F Schafer told Mt Carroll teachers and officials during Education Week that the state has not met constitutional education promises. He said seven million dollars is still owed to school districts, while treasury funds allegedly hold nine million, and urged reorganizing the system into county units with a state board of education and independent districts for cities of certain sizes.
Circuit Judge Walter J. Ha Bay issued a temporary injunction halting the collection of local utilities sales tax on water and gas in over 100 mining communities. Petitioners argue the tax is unconstitutional and ineffective against municipal utilities operating their own systems, with one city taking part in the suit.

About 40 laborers and seven machine operators are employed. Other projects likely to be assigned to the same man.
Illinois will gain an additional 3.5 million dollars in federal relief funds for the last half of November. Executive secretary Wilfred S. Reynolds of the JERC says only about seven percent of allocations will be needed in the period, a shift from a 20 percent reduction in the first half of the month. The new total increases by 175 thousand dollars over the allotment for the first 18 days.
Clyde Sisler of Mt Carrell has taken over the tester role for the Gros County Dairy Herd Improvement Association, replacing Wallace Williams who resigned this week. Williams had held the post since last spring.
Francis Weinman president of the Mt Carroll high school alumni association announced the annual banquet and dance will be held on December 27. Committees were named to arrange the event with chairs for program dance tickets and other details including Fran ce, Mara Orr Les Johnson and Mrs Dor Harsistt Vanderhey kman.
Corn growers may apply for 45 cent per bushel loans starting December 1, available to corn-hog contract signers in Carrell County. Loans aim to encourage high quality storage, with reduced rates and grade standards set to support orderly market practices and prevent spoilage.

Burial in Catholic cemetery at Savanna. He is survived by one brother and two sisters. William C Frederick Chadwick 71 died Monday night at home west of Chadwick. Funeral Thursday afternoon from Frank funeral home in Chadwick. Rev S G Eberly to officiate. Survived by two brothers and two sisters. Andrew Hinrichsen Sarana Amirew Hinrichsen 15 died Tuesday night at his home. Funeral Friday at home and Debheran church with Rev G B Fisher. Burial in Peters, Clinton. Jassens 2 brothers and a sister.
A Milledgeville resident, Harlan Wenger, was fined after a disturbance last Wednesday afternoon at Mt Carroll. The incident followed a brief disorderly conduct at a local venue, with Sheriff’s department involvement and a subsequent fine issued to the individual.
