Keeping Cows In Open Shed Study Findings
A three year Pennsylvania study compared cows kept in an open shed and in a dairy barn. Open shed cows endured zero to 40 degrees and showed larger swings in milk flow with weather changes. Barn cows stayed near 40 to 50 degrees. Over time barn cows fell about 2.6 pounds per week, open shed cows fell 36 pounds weekly during cold spells, and outdoor cows produced 2.44 pounds of milk per therm above maintenance versus 2.66 for barn cows. Outdoor cows stayed cleaner but needed more bedding.

Cow stanchions and stalls
Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station notes many patent stanchions on the market but finds them costly. Old style rigid stanchions remain common and are comfortable enough for cows, though swinging stanchions offer greater comfort. Readily installed without iron frames, they cost about $1.35 each in home built frames with satisfactory results.

TRY TO KEEP COWS GAINING Mistake to Think Animals Give Maxi mum Amount
Farmers often assume cows peak milk right after freshening and then decline. Many cows can be pushed to higher production for weeks after calving with careful feeding and close watching. Better feed and care can boost the milk records of otherwise indifferent cows.
Best time to have calves in October and November
The article advises cows should calve in October or November to maximize milk flow and product prices. Cows will be nearly dry when hot weather arrives, so breeding should occur between December and February 20 to align calving with the optimal window.
