A Babson column advises cautious land investment after World War II, warning against noncash purchases and predicting turbulence in farming and land values through 1960. It weighs cash land, smaller personal farms, and the impact of mechanization, regulation, and politics on commercial farming and real estate.
The sale of the Northwestern Utilities company serving Savanna Mt. Carroll Chadwick and Thomson to Fred D. Ellis and Edmund J. Haugh of Chicago was announced. The purchase price is $940,000. The new firm will be Northwestern Gas and Electric company with authorized securities including a $550,000 first mortgage and 32 percent bonds and other notes and stock.
The OPA announced watermelon price regulation this year with fixed prices at shipper and wholesale levels and a retail markup plan. Shipping point prices are $83 per ton through July 4 and $26 per ton after, intended to yield a seasonal parity return for growers.
The Blackhawk Fire Fighters association uniting over 50 departments across Lee Ogle Whiteside and Carroll counties will hold its annual meeting in Polo on June 1 hosted by the Polo Fire Department and local industry partners. Capt A A Nichoson Texas Company will address the 8:00 pm gathering on A Message to Fire Fighters. He is introduced by M F E Schryver Jr president of the Black Hawk Fire Fighters association. Capt Nichoson is a noted speaker on preserving the American way of life and has promoted War Bonds and Stamps among Texaco employees retired as a major after WWI with Croix de Guerre awards.

Mrs. Harlan Johannsen's birthday was celebrated at her Fulton home Saturday evening. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Dale Maden and family of Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Grim and family of Thomson, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Ashby, Mr. and Mrs. Sherm Oakley, and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Bower and baby.

The third annual Chicago Market Fat Stock and Carload Competition will run December 2 through 7 at the Chicago Stock Yards. It replaces the cancelled International Live Stock Exposition and offers the same prize money. Junior exhibits include steers lambs and hogs with a weight class change for hogs from 270 to 300 pounds heavy. Entries close November 1 for most divisions and November 25 for carload fat and feeder cattle.
Miss Janet Standish of Carroll County DHIA tester received a $25 war bond from the National Dairy Products corporation for outstanding work. She is one of ten Illinois testers to earn the award and was noted as the only woman tester in Illinois and possibly the nation to qualify.
Officials of the Producers Creamery of Mt Carroll announced they will not buy the Acker building for a new plant. The firm will erect the new facility at the creamery's present site in Mt Carroll.
Rep. Franklin A. Stransky of Savannah led the Carroll county delegation to the Illinois Republican convention in Springfield and was named chair of the convention committee that selected the state's electors. He presented the committee report as the sole electors from this region. Other county delegates included Clarence Bolhous of Thomson and Joseph Loeser of Savannah, with electors A. F. E. Galloway of Freeport and John Manning of Oregon.
Carroll county rationing office will close at noon Thursday June 1 for the remainder of the day. Ration board chairman B L Peck says staff will attend a fuel oil rationing procedure school in Morrison that afternoon.
Memorial Day remarks recall the third such observance since the war began and honor those who gave the last full measure. The speech urges action to hasten victory, preserve the nation, and celebrate peace through renewed efforts by all to defeat the evil forces and sustain freedom.

Leo Lotz of Lanark sold quality heifers on the Chicago market May 16 at 15.90 a hundredweight with 47 head averaging 1050 pounds. On May 17 S J Stransky and Hating of Savanna sold WO2 pound steers at 16.75 a hundredweight. The week saw near yearly highs with a top 17.06 cited as the highest since July last year.
Miss Mary Jane Thayer wed Capt. Jack Motlow at Savanna Methodist Church in a 4:30 p m ceremony. Laura Jane Runyan and Pfe Sydney B Smith exchanged vows in Rockville Maryland. Martha Sturtevant and Kenneth Canavan tied the knot in Clinton Iowa. All brides have local ties and spouses in military or naval service.
The Carroll county farm machinery rationing committee issued permits to purchase new equipment for May 15 through May 20, 1944. Named buyers include Stanley D. Welch and Charles E. Kingery for tractors, Ed Kloepping and Hart Johnston for elevators, Earl Musser for a side delivery rake, Cecil Imel and Walter Helle for manure spreaders, Vernon Reiling and Claude Grim for hay loaders, and Chas. C. Stern with Mr. and Mrs. Dana Cobb and Geo. Stapleton of Morrison for a milking machine.
The Thomson community marks Poppy Day on May 27 with poppy sales directed by Mrs. Paul Lewis and volunteers including Mrs. Gladys Cate and Frances Shimer College students. Proceeds benefit veterans and families as a tribute to World War I and II dead. Commencement activities at Frances Shimer in Mt. Carroll are set for June 4 with speakers Dr. John Milton Phillips and Dr. Edgar J. Goodspeed.
Dairy farmers in Chadwick receive the first 1944 issue of Kraft Cheese company’s Producers Edition of the Kraftaman. The issue features articles on farm problems and a four page supply guide, plus a pest control article by University of Wisconsin professor Ed M. Searls. Kraft promotes a program to boost milk quality. the magazine reaches 50 000 Kraft patrons and is edited by Walter Lloyd.
Charles Collins 19, colored, had his pardon plea rejected by the Illinois pardon board. Convicted with his brother John of murder and robbery of a CCC camp at Mt. Carroll in 1939, Charles is serving 20 years. John Collins was sentenced to death but later declared insane and moved to Menard prison.
Mt Carroll American Legion announces Memorial Day exercises on May 30 at 1 15 p m. All veterans will assemble at city hall and march to the school house with W K R C and others. A wreath dedication, salutes, taps and prayers follow a daylong program including a address by Atty Everett Laughlin and a ceremony at Oak Hill cemetery.
The eighth grade commencement events occur May 29 at multiple schools in Cats Roll County led by Rev H Rendall of Morrison. Dignitaries present diplomas. graduates listed with attending teachers and school names. program includes processional, solos, duets, and a vocal trio.
