MISS EMMA ALLISON WEDS HANOVER MAN MAY 15 AT WARREN. The ceremony and reception are described with family attendees and the couple’s Savanna home. Separately, grasshoppers threaten crops across the county. entomologists warn of potential widespread damage and advise farmers to monitor fields and plan control measures.
Twenty one Savanna women organized a Wa Tah Ye club chapter at a Friday meeting, with initiation at Clinton during the national convention. Mrs Lucile Stransky elected president. Mel Burtis Chkenian named VP. Eunice Stevens secretary. Dorothy Hood treasurer. Charter members list names and roles.
During the past week the following couples secured licenses from County Clerk Walter Watson. On May 11 Francis Luby of Round Lake and Rosemary Kraker of Shannon obtained licenses. on May 12 Claude Cook Jr of Lanark and Evelyn Schreiner of Chadwick obtained licenses.
Examinations will determine four year University of Illinois scholarships for Carroll County graduates. The county superintendent, Lawrence Buds, announced tests Saturday in the Carroll County Courthouse. Winners receive full tuition and incidental fees totaling 290 over four years.
Wild flowers in Mississippi Palisades State Park north of Savanna are at peak bloom with 52 identified varieties. The blooming periods vary by species from April to October, per Andreas Wittrup’s park record, including many ferns and ponds noted at the Palisades.
Daniel Dodge of Dubuque was bound over to the grand jury on a larceny charge for allegedly stealing a bicycle from the Glenn Miller farm near Savanna. He appeared before Justice RC Ward, bail set at 1000 dollars, and authorities arrested him in Savanna with the bicycle recovered in Dubuque.
Veterans groups in Savanna organize the annual Memorial Day observance on Monday May 31 with events at 10 a.m. at the cemetery chapel porch or 10 a.m. in the high school auditorium if weather fails. A parade starts at Lucoin school proceeds to Main Street Chicago Avenue Fourth Street Bowen then to cars for cemetery. William Laing general chairman leads the arrangements with Machen and L Lahie as other committee members representing Rudolph Hicks camp Steads Spanish War veterans Varn Bibber Hansen post American Legion and Shaw Leavens post Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Regional Holstein shows advertised as Black and White events to promote dairy farming. Seven one day breed shows across Illinois June 14 to June 30, with Hanover hosting June 16._entries from Stephenson to Jo Daviess counties and from McHenry to Lake counties. Visitors urged to attend, bring family, and enter cattle for Blue Ribbon prizes.
One hundred fourteen eighth grade students completed final exams at Mt Carroll with many signaling intent to attend commencement. The large group from Mt Carroll and nearby districts planned to sit for readings and ceremonies in Chadwick and Lanark while several chose Mt Carroll for the exercises. Memorial day services in Savanna and local births and deaths for April are noted in county records.
A Dubuque youth was lodged in the county jail on a bicycle theft charge and held to the grand jury under a $1000 bond. A Sandridge area survey reveals a serious infestation of crashooners, with Farm Adviser noting the necessity for a fight against pode.
Grace Momenteller of Rockford married Jack Wilson also of Rockford in a 4 pm ceremony at Court Street Methodist church Rockford. Bride is daughter of Mr and Mrs J G Momenteller. Groom is son of Mr and Mrs W R Watson of Mt Carroll. Wedding party included several Momentellers, Peach, Batie, and Stowell. Reception followed and couple will reside in Rockford.
The Holster dans herd owned by William Werner of Millerleville won first class at fines April, averaging 1560 pounds of butterfat per cow. It marks another step toward championship honors, announced Monday by Dean Rhode of the University of Minnesota. The wetnether leads state lists for three of the first ten months of 1937, with a second place finish in Apill. The herd posted over 197 Mes of butterfat and the state average hits 26K dead j enrolled in Day Leah trapioxcr association activities, yielding 28 1 lbs of butterfat.
Superintendent announces James is date for scholarship examinations at University of Illinois. Four scholarships available this year, two general county, one each in home economics and agriculture. Vocational ag teams from three high schools place in judging meet at Freeport Saturday. Two teams from Sa, Lanark, and Milledgeville eligible to enter state contest at Urbana.
Farmers have worked near nonstop for a week trying to catch up after long delays from rain and cool weather. Most fields remain without full corn and late planting persists in many areas. Night work is common, headlights illuminate tractors as crews push to complete sowing while a heavy shower disrupts progress.
Kay Westfall commander of Carroll County American Legion Council announced the county meeting will be held in Milledgeville library on Monday evening May 24. Rev H J Rendall pastor of the Savannah and Morrison Presbyterian churches will be the evening speaker.
Representatives from 24 high schools competed in Northwestern Chaos region meet at Rawisich farms. Lanark Milledgeville and Savanna earned entry to the state judging contest at Wibana June 17 and 18 by finishing in the top twelve in stock judging. Ashton led with 4,043 points across dairy fat stock grain and poultry, Polo second, Dakota third, Dixon fourth, Amboy fifth. Shiley of Lanark placed sixth in fatstock.
