Residents note improving weather after heavy rains and discuss community events. Graduation plans for the first class in the new gym, Alumni Dance and Banquet, and various club activities are highlighted. Local residents report fishing, dances, and a bicycle safety campaign, with updates on town projects, new fencing, and a 1928 Whippet for sale.
Officers for the Thomson Parents Teachers Association were installed at the last meeting of the year in the school cafeteria. President Mrs Marvin Holesinger and others received posts. Mrs Willis Snyder reported on the Chicago State Convention. a panel discussed World Problems Confronting our Youth.
Two Thomson women earned blue ribbons at the 4th Annual Missle Sport Valley Ceramics Show held over the weekend at the Mason Temple in Rock Island. Mrs. Ray Morelli won in hobbyist division and Mrs. Myles Haas took top honors in the professional group.
The Lanark Centennial Booster caravan will be in Thomson Saturday evening May 20 after 8 p.m. Be sure and see the event.
A group of 38 Thomson Grade School first graders toured the Savanna Ordnance Depot with an escorted bus trip. They visited the Fire Station facilities and firefighting apparatus before a lunch at the Depot Cafeteria. Several room mothers accompanied the children.
Words fail to express our thanks for the many kindnesses shown while at Rochester in the hospital and after returning home. The overwhelming mail buoyed us greatly. Special thanks to Mr and Mrs James Morrison for covering in our absence. Signed Alice Switzer.
The family of Mrs. Lara McGrath expresses heartfelt thanks to friends relatives and neighbors for kindness during illness and death of their mother. Special gratitude to Dr Red dies and Rev Allen for comfort and prayers. Also thanks to those who sent flowers cards food or assisted in any way.
Local church notices list services at THE Answer 5 GOD WORK COMMUNITY, BAPTIST, METHODIST and CATHOLIC churches with service times, Sunday school and youth events. Also reported are FFA chapter actions, officer installations, a tractor pull plan, a plowboy dance, and a girl’s fall requiring stitches at Clinton hospital.
Mrs P K McGinnis and family visit Mr and Mrs Arnold Bauer plus Mrs William Hamm visit. Mother's Day guests include Dean Rathje and Steven Savanna Gene Smiley Rockford and James Simmons family. Ray Brenneman moved to Whiteside County Nursing Home Morrison. Mrs Wesley Sack broke her right arm. Bernard Groharing and daughter Lori arrive from Sault Ste Marie to stay with Bruce Groharing.
The Thomson Community Consolidated Grade School eighth grade class, District 174, will graduate in the new gymnasium at 8 p.m. on Thursday May 25. Dr. Jack Peterson of Western Illinois University will give the speech at Macomb. Rev. Lowell Allen will deliver the invocation and benediction. Mrs. Margaret Murray will play the processional and recessional. The Junior High Mixed Ensemble will perform God of Our Fathers and I Hear America Singing. Calvin Eslinger, board president, will present the diplomas.
Sherman Ashby son of Mr and Mrs Lyle Ashby of Thom son suffered fractures of three bones in his foot in a Sunday morning auto truck crash at Route 78 and Argo Fa road. Two other boys in the car with him were badly shaken but uninjured. Lynn Bowers driver of the car had a leg scratch and torn trousers from guard rail. The truck driver, unhurt, claimed brake failure after signaling a left turn.
Saturday evening guests gathered at the Roggendorf home to celebrate birthdays of Gus Roggendorf Frank Leavens and Victor Roggendorf. Guests included Mr and Mrs Victor Roggendorf of Morrison Mr and Mrs Glen Brock of Clinton John Yeager and Mrs Ada White of Savanna Mr and Mrs Rus sel Green. Ice cream and cake were served during the social hour.
Mr and Mrs Dean Rathie of Savanna announce the adoption of a son in a playful form using a mock train timetable. The Thomson Music Boosters held a May meeting in the school cafeteria. New officers were elected for the coming year: President Mrs. John Sloan, Vice President Mrs. John C. Atherton, Secretary Mrs. Robert Knuth, and Treasurer Mrs. Frank Manning. The cost of band and chorus risers exceeded estimates and the club voted to pay the balance. Lions Club members built the risers. There will be no summer band or concerts this year.
Miss Betty Feldt of Fulton to wed Edwin Balk on June 16 in a double shower sequence last week. A May Tuesday misc shower at Fulton hosted by Mrs Ralph Bergman concluded with 10 guests and prizes for Mrs Henry Mears and others, while a May 11 grocery shower in Cottonwood hosted by Mrs Albert Peel and aunts included 25 relatives and prizes for Mrs Dwayne Bielema and Mrs Frank Van Zuiden.

Educational Fund accounts for 4 percent, Regular Building 14 percent, Bonds and Interest 29 percent, Municipal Retirement 1 percent, Transportation 1 percent, Working Cash not used. The note highlights the school’s modern facilities and ongoing bond retirements from 1947.
Mrs Janet Frosch and daughter Jenna of Chicago and Miss Cynthia McNerney of Savannah were weekend guests of Mrs Frank Potter and Mr Potter. Mrs Potter received a Sunday call from their other daughter Mrs Betty Zimmer of Hampton Iowa.
The American Legion of Thomson launches a Bicycle Safety program for local children on Saturday May 27 from 9 to 11 am at Thomson Grade School. If weather delays, the event moves to the following week. Lauren Mitchell is general chairman. Each bicycle will be inspected, serial numbers registered, and riders will complete five test lanes with a short true false exam. Successful participants receive a safety emblem for their bike. Parents are urged to enroll their children to prevent serious bicycle accidents during school vacation.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lura McGrath 67 of Thomson were held Sunday at 3 p m in the Law Funeral Home Savanna with Rev Lowel Allen officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery Mt Carroll. She was born January 7 1894 in Mt Carroll and died Friday at the home of her daughter Mrs Leo Kness. She married Bion McGrath in 1917 who preceded her in death. Surviving are six daughters 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mrs Wayne Heitmeier of Letts announces the engagement of her daughter Barbara to Darrell L Gaar of Oswego Illinois. He is a teacher at Oswego High School and a graduate of York Community High School Thomson and Northern Illinois University DeKalb. A late summer wedding is planned possibly in August.
The Thomson Fire Department responded Saturday afternoon to the Ernest Rathje home north of Thomson as mulch on asparagus beds caught fire.
Mother's Day dinner and supper guests included Mr and Mrs Gilpin Stagg and sons with her grandmother and aunt Mrs Myrta Groharing and Bessie of Chadwick, and her parents Mr and Mrs Virgil Wilt. Afternoon callers were Mr and Mrs Paul Groharing and daughter Gail Savanna, and Mr and Mrs Fay Graharnig and daughter Gail with her friend of Morrison.
Danny Ray Kness was admitted Monday as a surgical patient and dismissed Tuesday. Harold James was a medical patient for one day. Albert Lynch was a medical patient in Clinton from Sunday to Tuesday of this week.
A 90 piece concert featuring the Thomson and Preston school bands drew between 250 and 300 attendees in the Thomson High School gym. TheCombined program included pieces like Manhattan Vignettes and Stars and Stripes Forever with both bands performing jointly.
York Progressive Home Bureau members met for a potluck and elected Curtis St. Ores as vice chairman and Lloyd Smith as secretary. The 500 Card Club held a meeting with honors to Claribel Smith, Mae Kustes, Amy Lewis, and Luvella Diehl. TNT group meets May 24 with verses from St. Luke. Lions Club plans Ladies Night dinner at Lafayette Hotel with reservations to John Krahn. Mary Circle meets May 24 at Mrs. Lawrence Halfman. Legion Auxiliary holds regular meeting at the Legion Hall.
Charles Clarence Jeffers 69 died May 8 at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City after a stroke. Services were held May 12 at Williamson funeral home in Jacksonville, burial in Jacksonville Cemetery. Survived by two brothers Homer of Peoria and John of Lewiston Mo a sister circle Bertha Coffee Eva Baker and Mabel Mullens and many nieces and nephews. Attendees from Thomson included Mr and Mrs Clarence Appel.
Wilfred Hazen of Rock Falls, son-in-law of Mrs. Ethel Kness of Thomson, was injured last Wednesday afternoon in a fall with a construction crew east of Sterling. He was taken by ambulance to Community General Hospital in Sterling with no broken limbs reported.
Mr and Mrs Herman Bimm former Thomson residents have purchased the Sam Kam pas Jr home at 909 Eaton St Savanna and will move there from East Savanna where they have lived since Thomson departure. Mrs Myrta Groharing and Bessie Chadwick were Saturday overnight guests of her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Virgil Wilt. Mr and Mrs Paul Marks Stockton were Monday evening visitors with Mr and Mrs Fra Leavens.
Vernon C. McGinty of Louisville Ky son of Mr and Mrs Charles McGinty of Thomson has been selected by the Republican Party as its candidate for state senator from the 38th District Primary election is set for May 23 McGinty a York Community High School graduate earned an accounting degree from the University of Illinois in 1941 joined General Electric and served in Korea from 1943 to 1946 He moved to Louisville in 1951 where he remains employed by GE He and his wife Lucille Stickell and their son Gary live at 403 Kingston Avenue Louisville Ky
Bob Gray of Geneva Illinois son in law of Mr and Mrs John Ashpole recently completed a five week sales engineer training class at the headquarters of the Structural Clay Products Institute. He was one of eight graduates and serves as field development representative for the Structural Clay Products Research Foundation in Geneva. A total of 208 men in 11 years have been trained in this course.
Sunday afternoon callers in the P. K. McGinnis home marked the 5th birthday of Cynthia Sue Hamm. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hamm and family, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Hamm and family, Mr. and Mrs. William Hamm, Mrs. Fred Diettrich, Connie and Bonnie, and Marilyn Vickie, Pam, and Karen Gilbert. Mrs. Larry Geerts and children visited Mrs. Jo Anderson in Clinton recently.
Mr and Mrs Lauren Mitchell welcomed a son named David George born Thursday May 11 at Jane Lamb Hospital Clinton weighing 7 pounds 4 ounces. Mr and Mrs Alfred Temple welcomed a daughter born May 14 at Jane Lamb Hospital Clinton.
