March grand jury spent two days weighing evidence in the shooting death of Lt. Paul LaMaster at Mt Carroll WCC camp. Two youths, John Cullins and Chipence Wilites, were arrested after a holdup and alleged murder. State's Attorney Hoearton presented testimony while fingerprints were checked on items from the camp office. The jury adjourned for further deliberation to determine if indictment is warranted.
A body identified as Erhardt Goss was recovered from the Mississippi River near Savanna early Sunday after being missing since Oct. 21, 1928. Coroner’s inquest ruled death accidental drowning with Lee Goss and Charles Young among witnesses. Burial held at Savanna Catholic cemetery.
Mrs. John W. Squires of Mt Carroll was elected regent of Carroll chapter DAR at the annual meeting in Savanna. She succeeds Mrs. Thomas Packard of Lanark. Other officers crowned for the coming year include Mrs. S J Campbell honorary regent Miss Ella Portin vice regent Mrs Frank Vanderheyden treasurer Miss Mary Miles historian Miss Dorothy Metz chaplain Mrs John Deters. The program noted reports on the Continental Congress and the state convention in Danville.
J. W. Stevenson of LaSalle, district supervisor for the Illinois Agricultural Conservation association, announced that Carroll county has 88 percent of its cropland signed up for the 1929 Territorial farm program. The county’s rate tops the state average and beats other central and southern counties, while several northern counties report lower participation. Deadline to sign is May 1, with potential farm program benefits totaling around forty million dollars for northern Illinois farmers.
The second distribution of 1928 taxes, now in process, was issued by the county treasurer. Totals include Fair Haven six thousand three hundred seventy five dollars. York seven thousand. Wysox six thousand four hundred. Rock Creek six thousand nine hundred. Washington two thousand one hundred. Woodland three thousand one hundred. Freedom three thousand seven hundred. Cherry Grove one thousand one hundred. Shannon three thousand seven hundred fifty. Lima two thousand seven hundred fifty. Salem three thousand seven hundred seventy five. Mt Carroll four thousand sixteen dollars. Savanna eleven thousand seven hundred fifty. Elkhorn Grove two thousand one hundred twenty five. Woodland leads total payments at thirty nine percent. others range from twenty two to thirty eight percent. Overall, twenty three point eight percent of the county total tax bill had been collected last week.
A Sunday blaze five miles southwest of Chadwick destroyed the two story home of Mr and Mrs Clarence Bielema on the Heinze farm. Nearly all furniture and clothing were lost as volunteers battled flames bursting from the structure aided by a Chadwick chemical truck. Firefighters saved a nearby corn crib and machine shed but the house was a total loss. Insurance will partially cover the damage and the family will live in a nearby tenant house temporarily.
Milledgeville high school captured first with 66 points in a Wednesday triangular meet against Shannon and Lanark. Shannon finished second with 38 points and Lanark third with 28. Glenn led Milledgeville with three event wins and a final total of three pairs, while Buss of Shannon collected a mix of top finishes for 16 points. Milledgeville won eight events, Shannon two, and Lanark two.
Nearly 11,900 bankers from every county in the state will attend the forty-ninth annual convention of the Hingis Bankers Association in Peoria May 25 26 at the Hotel Pere Marquette. Notable speakers include Samuel B Deflengill James M Barr and U V Wilcox. John J Anton is nominated for president with no contest expected. Four downstate bankers are vying for vice president with Carter Gilmore Grizzelle and Reardon as candidates.
Miss Grave Changstrom head of the piano department at Frances Shimer College will marry Dr Paul Breslich this summer. The ceremony will be at Joseph Hilton chapel, University of Chicago, with De A. E. Haydon officiating. Miss Changstrom is daughter of the Carl Changstroms of Chicago. fiance connected with the Northwest clinic at Minot, North Dakota.

About 600 people have signed up for the electric cooperative as officials report strong early interest in Cauroll and de Vaviess counties. The May 10 signup was the lead, with an engineer drawing routes for lines to deliver power. Maps will be sent to Washington for REA review, then plans for contractors to build the lines. Current officials cannot specify total miles or exact sites for construction.
Eighth grade pupils from 8 rural Carroll county schools will receive diplomas Tuesday evening at Mt. Carroll High School marking completion of primary studies and readiness for high school. Supt Bruch announced the 125 students who took the tests. three failed to grade. Names and attending schools listed include Frederick Blocker Oak Grove and many pupils from Mosquito Hill Gillespie Sage Polegrove Spring Grove Woodland Straw Todgers Georgetown Mt. Union Arnolds Grove North Otter Creek Dimon and others.
Carroll takes first in the track tilt with Milledgeville finishing second and Chadwick dropping to third place in the standings.
Mr Carroll high school men chalked up 52 points to retain the conference title at Chadwick. Mt Carroll set new records as Obelman cleared 5 feet 8.5 inches in the high jump and Amit of Milledgeville threw 42 feet in the discus. Milledgeville took second, Chadwick third, and Shannon and Lanark followed. Shannon won fourth place with 16 points in the team standings.
More than 40 Frances Shimer College students will perform in a Centennial Pageant, celebrating Carroll County history. The May Queen will be Constance Clough with Mary Bickelt as maid of honor. The event, May 20 at 4 pm, is open to the public without charge.
