Paul Derry, a Fulton oil station operator, was beaten Wednesday night and hospitalized Thursday in Mercy hospital Clinton with a broken jaw and skull fracture. Doctors warned of a slim chance to recover. Donald Cossman and James Ashbury faced assault and battery charges. bonds set at $1000 each, case continued 15 days as Derry’s condition was watched. The incident reportedly began over an automobile.
About twenty B 25 bombers from Chanute Field will fly to Lanark Illinois for Memorial Day ceremonies honoring fallen World War II fliers, including Lt Robert Warfel of the 15th Air Force. The formation will also head to Milwaukee for further services and a Veterans Parade. The event marks the B 25s early bombing role over Tokyo.
The Carroll County office reports marriage licenses issued last week including Milo Wepking and Barbara Erdmier, Russell Weber and Betty West, Donald Bell and Opa White, Thomas Anderson Jr. and Nona Phialmlee, Sydney Spahr and Josephine Spahr. Also listed are Honorable discharges from U S service recorded by Circuit Clerk Gordon B. Smith for several servicemen and others in Savanna, Lanark, Chadwick, Polo, Mt. Carroll, and nearby communities.
Officers of the Juvenile Grange of Chadwick will be installed tonight May 16 at the Grange hall. Installing officers are Mr and Mrs Delmar Lang of Rock Creek Grange. Frances Shimer college horse show at Glen garry Farm Stables near Mt Carroll set for Sunday afternoon May 26 with judges Russell Abhill from Danville and Mrs Mary K Holt from Mt Carroll. Announcer will be Howard Jones of Elgin and ringmaster Robert Snyder of Chicago. Community residents may enter children pony class men trail ride and women trail ride.
A barn on Mrs. Mary Sword’s Milledgeville area farm burned to the ground last Thursday at about 6 30 p m. Glenn Metz the tenant escaped with several horses despite severe burns untying them. Hay grain and a manure spreader were lost. Origin of the fire unknown. Milledgeville fire department saved a nearby barn from sparks.
Graduation exercises for eighth grade pupils in Carroll county rural schools will be held at 8 p.m. Monday June 3 in the Mt Carroll high school gym. County Superintendent Lawrence E Bruch said eight schools have closed for the year and many more will close this week.
Members meet in Mt. Carroll to review progress for securing 500 members. Total at 350 with Washington township leading at 41. Organization day planned for Friday June 14 at 8 PM in Farm Bureau hall. A Mt. Carroll check-up meeting is set for June 1 with township chairmen urged to attend. Committees established for nominating arrangements budget dues constitution and by laws publicity hospitality and more.
Savanna ordnance depot will operate on daylight saving time starting Monday May 20 to conserve fuel light and power. Col Sylvester A Hall commandant states about 1700 civilians are employed salvaging and storing ammunition with several hundred more needed. Depot workers live across communities within a wide radius and most stay on standard time. Weekend guests at Lynn Curley home were Francis Sheridan East Moline and Beverly Walbert Chicago. Sunday dinner guests were Richard Falls and John Atherton.
Max McGraw of Central Telephone announces purchase of a majority of American Utilities Service Corporation stock. The acquisition adds nine state operations, including Illinois Savanna and Wisconsin Latrosse, with no expected personnel changes at the Illinois Northwestern unit.
Mt. Carroll high school prepares for commencement with 35 seniors listed for May 31 at 8 p.m. in the school gym. Rev. Max Strang of Dubuque will give the commencement address, followed by Rev. Frank Countryman delivering the baccalaureate sermon on May 26.
Shannon high school seniors will receive diplomas at commencement exercises May 31 in the school gym. Dr. Homer C. Boblitt of Lanark will be the speaker. Fred Homedew 82 a York township native died at 1 30 a m Wednesday in his Mt Carroll home He retired from business in Mt Carroll years ago Funeral services will be held at 11 o clock Friday at Frank Funeral Home Mt Carroll Rev William Kendall officiating burial in Savanna Cemetery He was born March 6 1864 son of Henry and Harriett Homedew on a farm east of Thomson His youth was in Thomson then he moved to Mt Carroll where he was in business for many years He was twice married second wife Emma Smith Geldmacher died in 1934 Surviving are a son Fred Jr of Glens Falls NY a nephew George Hamilton Mt Carroll three nieces Mrs Correlia Walrod Detroit Mich Mrs Edna White and Mrs Guy Munson Julesburg CO a sister in law Mrs Anna Homedew Julesburg and other relatives
B. L. Peck of Mt Carroll has been re appointed by Gov. Dwight Green as public administrator in Carroll county for a four year term. Peck is completing his first term in that office. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stage and children of Rock Island spent Saturday and Sunday in the Ely Cochran home. Cecil George of Morrison called Sunday in the Cochran home. Mrs. George and daughter Barbara were unable to come as the latter has scar itina and they are quarantined.
Joseph Melendy died at 8 30 p m Sunday in Mercy hospital Clinton Town after a day as a patient. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Argo Fa Methodist church with Rev Frank Countryman and Rev Paul Van Zee officiating. Burial followed in Upper York cemetery. He was born October 1 1870 on a farm near Argo Fa and married Lulu Carroll in 1904. Surviving are his widow two daughters a sister five grandchildren and many relatives.
Franklin L. Wilhelmi a 30 year old Milwaukee railroad switchman died in the Savanna Milwaukee yards when crushed between two box car couplers. Inquest testimony said crew did not see him enter the gap. coroner’s jury cited a crushing injury while on duty. Survived by his mother three sisters and three brothers. Body sent to Galena for funeral services.
Sunday afternoon visitors at the Curleys included Will Robertson of Argo and Dallas Robertson of Delmar with Delbert Curley of Cordova. Isaac Decker hosted Harold Imel and family from Chadwick plus Betty Eva and Warren Imel. Generational gatherings occurred as four generations were present with Alex Anderson and family coming from Freeport and Mar Vin Leslie with Roger Leslie from Milwaukee. Hall family traveled by plane to Thomson.
County treasurer Frank L. Ross announces extended office hours until 3 PM on Saturdays May 25 and June 1 to assist taxpayers. June 1 marks the deadline for paying personal property tax and the first real estate tax installment without penalties.
Mrs Bird Knox aged 86 died at her Milledgeville home at 2 a m Saturday May 11 after several months illness. Born August 12 1859 in Beach Grove Luzerne pa she moved to Illinois in 1869. She married Walter R Knox March 13 1893 in Old Town Methodist church. Survived by sisters Clara Gilmore Ella Halbower of Miller South Dakota and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband died in 1931 and a son died in infancy.
Funeral services for Jacob Hengel 79 of Savanna were conducted at Fuller Funeral Home with burial in Savanna cemetery. He died May 8 in Chestnut Park after being born June 4 1866 Mosquito Hill. Surviving children include three daughters and two sons. Miss Joanna Brown 60 died May 8 at a Savanna home. funeral held in Billings Montana. She was born June 10 1885 in Green Island Iowa. She leaves a sister and brother and two Savanna nieces.
Harriet Harder 91 of Mt. Carroll died at home of her grandson Edward Grenoble. Funeral at Mt. Carroll Christian Funeral Home with burial in Lanark cemetery. She born May 30 1854 in Center county Pa. Survived by three sons 17 grandchildren four great grandchildren. Wyatt H Greenleaf 68 of Savanna died in Mt. Carroll after long illness. Funeral at Savanna cemetery officiated by Rev H Foster Whitney. Born March 20 1878 in Savanna and worked for the Milwaukee railroad. parents and brother Paul preceded him.
Mrs Walter Frederick 25 of Milledgeville died at 4 30 p m Tuesday May 14 at Lena hospital The former Iva Mae Seiple born Aug 2 1920 Mt Carroll daughter of Harry and Mary Seiple married July 4 1939 to Walter Frederick Surviving are her husband three sons Fay Roy and Raymond a daughter Mary her parents five sisters and four brothers The body sent to Frank Funeral Home Mt Carroll for arrangements
Voters across six rural districts in Carroll County approved consolidation 78 to 58, with three districts in favor two against and one tied. A special election will create a six member board of education and plan a new Argo-Fa school, though classes may continue in two existing rural buildings until construction.
Regular operations resumed in eastern Carroll County and nearby areas after coal miners returned to work ending a two week truce. Dimout regulations were lifted by the Illinois Commerce Commission and embargoes on railroads express and heavy parcel post were removed. The La Nar theatre at Lanark also reopened while utilities urged careful power use due to fuel supply uncertainty.
John W. Bailey, 37, publisher of the Bureau County Republican, and his two children Nancy 6 and John W. Bailey III 4 perished in a house fire on Monday May 13 near Princeton. Mrs Bailey survived with fractures after leaping from a second floor window and aiding neighbors who arrived with a ladder. Bailey held multiple posts including vice president of Triangle Advertising Agency and theater interests in Illinois.
