Six Carroll county high schools including Chadwick Thomson Lanark Milledgeville Mount Carroll and Shannon clash at Chadwick for the track and field championship. Mt Carroll is favored to win the dlashes while Lanark leads in weights. Preliminary runs in the forenoon with finals in the afternoon. schedule similar to last year.

Forreston Triumphs Over Shannon And Byron In Triangular Meet

Forreston high school tracksters won seven events to top Byron and Shannon in a triangular meet on the Forreston field Monday afternoon. Forreston scored 70.5 points, Byron 56.5, Shannon 41, with Shannon taking titles in the 440-yard dash by Gettemy and the 880-yard run by Brinkmeier.

Elm Planted At Grave Of Unknown Soldier Ceremony

Edward Sweitzer of near Lanark returned from Washington to plant an elm from his farm at Arlington Memorial Cemetery. The annual tree at the Unknown Soldier grave was added this year on April 18 at the amphitheatre entrance. Sweitzer's request went to Congressman Leo E. Allen who arranged the ceremony.

Game and Fish Propagation To Be Increased

The State Department of Conservation plans a 25 percent rise in its propagation program, higher standards for officers, and expanded education over the next two years. Funded by hunting and fishing licenses, the department expects revenue to cover the broader activities and leave a substantial balance.

Mt Carroll Wins Three-Way Track Meet May 6

Mt Carroll High School dominated the triangular meet on the county seat track, taking first in six events and collecting points in seconds thirds and fourths to total 57 and 16 against Thomson and Stockton. Stockton finished second with 48 and 56 points, while Thomson registered 11. Five Mt Carroll athletes were named to the district meet at Rockford Friday, though Wilcox may miss competition due to an injury from the Gate Way Classic.

Will Open Bids Friday On Road Project Here

The state division of highways will open bids Friday May 9 for 20 highway improvement projects in 12 counties. Included is 6.1 miles of 22 foot gravel or crushed stone surfacing on state aid routes 5 and 4 from U S highway 52 at Lanark to route 8 east of Chadwick.

Smiley Burnette to Attend Thomson Church Dinner

Smiley Burnette, famed in Gene Autry films, will visit Thomson for a church dinner noon Thursday with his troupe. The event, guests from Clinton theatres and the Clinton Herald may attend, with early school dismissal and a special broadcast from the church lawn. Tickets cost 25 and 50 cents.

Ed Lchreiner of Carroll County marketed 21 prime Hereford steers from Lanark area, Lanark farm, at Chicago Stock Yards last week. The cattle sold as high as 13.65 dollars per hundredweight, averaging 1287 pounds per head. Adversity is the first path to truth.

Alex Mackenzie of Savanna High School won the Americanism speaking contest at the National Forensic League tournament in Lexington Kentucky Inez Thursday. He previously placed second for Savanna in the Illinois High School Association contest at Champaign scoring 16 points.

Savanna Man Suffered Burns In Gasoline Blast

Geo Correll a 35 year old Savanna service station operator sustained first and second degree burns to face chest and arms last Thursday when gasoline sprayed on a hot Clinton Iowa car engine caused an explosion at his station. Marvin Gillogly a customer ripped off the burning shirt and Harry Charneski station attendant smothered the blaze.

Students in three counties vie for Chicago Motor Club camp award

Mount Carroll Native Named New Sales Manager

W. H. Elliott a Mount Carroll native and Mount Carroll high school graduate has become manager of the Ray Dodge Motor Co. in Clinton Iowa. Dodge cited rising business as the reason for the appointment. Elliott, formerly divisional used car manager for GM’s Chevrolet division, will move his family from Davenport to Clinton this month after eight years in Savanna auto sales.

Utilities announce rate cuts for Northwestern Minote customers

Officials of Northwestern Minote Utilities announce lower electric rates across all service areas in Carroll County. Domestic service gains savings for 450 plus kilowatt hours monthly, with a $1 minimum bill now covering up to 14 kWh. Commercial rates unchanged for up to 50 kWh. Small communities see higher usage allowance under the $2 minimum. Full details appear in a half-page ad in this issue.

Carroll Schools Win Big in Gateway Classic Meet

Athletes from Savanna Lanark and Mt Carroll high schools earned points at Clinton Iowa in the Gateway Classic. Savanna finished seventh with 71.2 points Lanark placed ninth with five points and Mt Carroll tenth with three points Davenport won the meet with 67.12 points while LaSalle-Peru was runner-up.

Scholarships Offered At Illinois Colleges For Carroll County Students

Four University of Illinois scholarships will be awarded this spring to Carroll county high school graduates with one state teachers college scholarship per high school. Two general university scholarships allow any course. one honors top exam score and one the second highest. Additional agriculture and home economics scholarships require applying to the Illinois Farmers' Institute. Examinations are June 7. teachers college scholarships require no exam.
