Chadwick Highs Track Team Defeats Milledgeville 54 to 36

Chadwick high school beat Milledgeville 54 36 in a dual meet at Milledgeville last Thursday. Meyers led with 16 points winning shot put discus and broad jump, Moothart matched 16 with wins in 60 and 440, Fink scored 13 12 with wins and seconds in multiple events. Mill edgeville top scorer was Reiff with 12 points. Fast times were noted in the dashes and a downhill wind aided times.

Henry Tripp Dead Rites Planned for Friday

Henry W. Tripp 78 of Wacker died at 1 30 am Wednesday in Jane Lamb hospital Clinton Iowa after three weeks as a patient Funeral services will be held at 340 pm Friday at Frank funeral home Mt Carroll Burial will be in Chadwick cemetery He was born July 6 1865 in Fair Haven township Carroll county son of Anthony and Elizabeth Tripp He married Anna M Zugschwerdt on September 24 1894 Surviving are two daughters Beulah Tripp of Wacker and Mrs Maurice Boens of Chicago one son Wade of Savanna two brothers John of Chadwick and George near Ideal five sisters Mrs George Cambman Sr Lena Tripp of Chadwick Mrs John Sauer and Mrs David Glenn of Milledgeville and Mrs Samuel Lapole of Minneapolis four grandchildren His wife preceded him in death three years ago.

Fire Destroys Barn East of Savanna

Fire destroyed a 20 by 80 foot barn on the Leland Kerkove farm three miles east of Savanna. Loss estimated at 1700 dollars. the building was insured but the contents were not. Mrs. Kerkove found the fire about 4 p.m. and Savanna firefighters, aided by neighbors, could not save the structure as flames engulfed it and the roof collapsed. The barn held tools, 500 bushels of corn, chicken feed, grain and other items, with baby chicks burned.

Carroll Pilot Now In Florida

Lt. Kermit W. Hartman of Mt Carrell has returned from the south Pacific and is at the Army Air Forces redistribution station in Miami Beach Florida. His next assignment will be recommended. Hartman is 21 and flew 90 missions in the Solomons in 13 months. He is credited with aiding in the destruction of one Japanese Zero.

Thomson briefs Mrs Elwood Williams of Savanna visited Tuesday with Mr and Mrs Fred Doden. The Ben Dykstra family visited Sunday afternoon at Morrison with Mr and Mrs George Balk. Mr and Mrs Chas Wilt and baby Doneth Lynn of Florissent Mo are visiting with his grandparents Mr and Mrs Chas Wilt. The former runs an oil station and because the highway is closed by floods he is enjoying a vacation.

Eighth Grade Commencement Set for May 24

Carroll County rural eighth graders completed exams this week with results due in two weeks. Commencement will take place May 24 in the Mt. Carroll High School gym with more than 100 diplomas expected. Rev. H. J. Rendall of Morrison is named speaker.

Savanna Stores Adopt Thursday Afternoon Close

Truman Royer Steers Bring $16.25 Per Cut

Carroll county stockman Truman Royer of Lanark sold a two head drive of 1300 pound steers at Chicago Stock Yards for $16.25 per cwt, near the week's top. At the Oakdale Campmeeting association annual meeting the board approved grounds improvements and new equipment. Wind break cuts power to Chadwick after midday wind

A high wind shattered a power line between Chadwick and Highway 78, cutting electric service to Chadwick and interrupting Thomson briefly. Linemen reopened the damaged line, restoring service to other communities while Chadwick remained without power.

William Doty, who had been visiting relatives near Chadwick and Savanna since returning from the Italian front, has gone to Camp Wheeler in Macon Georgia to attend a special infantry school.

Rain Halts Conference Track Meet At Chadwick

Rain halted the conference track meet at Chadwick Tuesday afternoon with nine events left to run. Officials warned conditions might push the finish to Thursday or later as further storms and a soggy track delayed plans to complete the meet. Chadwick, Lanark, and Mt Carroll vied for the early lead in the partial events.

Salesman Hurt In Auto Crash West Of Lanark

Henry Trepus a 43 year old Freeport salesman was seriously injured in an auto accident on state highway 64 about four miles west of Lanark. His eastbound car left the pavement hit a mailbox swerved across and rolled over several times. An Mt. Carroll ambulance took him to St Francis hospital in Freeport where he remained unconscious late Tuesday night.

Lanark driller Robert Sargent dies at 40

Robert Sargent a Lanark resident and well driller died suddenly Friday night at his home three miles north of Lanark. Born January 25 1904 in Elk horn Grove township he lived in Carroll county all his life. He married Lucille Whitmer on November 26 1925. Surviving are his widow four children Ransom Virginia Maurice and Wendell at home two brothers Howard of Saunemin and Jasper of Detroit and three sisters Belva Arbogast Irene Sargent and Blanche Lewis.
