Town of York holds regular meeting at town hall with town auditor urging reductions in salaries and levies. Proposals include cutting town levy from 3200 to 2700, pauper fund to 800, cemetery levy to 409, and highway and labor rates. Also proposes grave digging charges drop to 6 dollars ordinary and 10 with vault. Election day meeting set for 2 pm next Tuesday to approve or reject these changes and appoint cemetery sextons.
Ernie R. Babcock a former resident of Thomson died at his Clinton Iowa home Saturday at 6 10 p m after a two day illness He was born April 28 1877 in Rock Falls IL and married Miss Tina Dyson Sept 12 1899 in Thomson IL Surviving are his wife four Clinton residents including Virginia and James plus two sisters Pallbearers and Thomson attendees are listed Interment was in the Lower York cemetery
This week lists community activities including a Young Peoples banquet at the Methodist church and a Church Night at the Church of Christ. A trance event at the Masonic hall, an operetta Love Pirates of Ha j man at the high school gym, a Frecion day dinner at the Methodist church basement, and a committee meeting at the Masonic hall. The calendar also notes a YP. T. A. meeting at the high school and other April events.
A wolf was seen near the Flanners schoolhouse south of town this week. The animal rushed toward the low hands east of the road and was fairly well scared. Wolves are rare in the area, with sightings occasional when the species is still present locally.
Recipes describe a light eight egg white to yolk cake with folding steps, sugar, citrus rind, and careful sifting, baked in a tube pan at 326 degrees. Also included is a layered Spanish Rice description with browned hamburger onions, cooked rice, tomatoes, and bread crumbs baked about 30 minutes. Names Blanche Turney and Mrs Will Slaymen accompany the entries.
The Girls Glee Club presented the operetta Love Pirates of Hawaii at the high school in April with Dorothy Dear, Lucille Stickel, and Sylvalena Bothous among the cast. The program included numbered songs, pirate chorus scenes, and an Act Four finale, with Dorothy, Billy, and Miss Primer leading the principal roles. At a declamatory contest held Friday night, Glades Appel won first and Lareille Stickel second. Ramona Tests earned top music honors.
A Mt Morris resident list notes a morning event with several musical numbers at the ith school. Mr and Mrs Charlie Welch of Mt Carrel hosted Tuesday visitors at Mes Lucinda Groharing's home. The Pratt family of Mt Carrell Wis hosted visits with friends Wednesday. Misses Sheriden Weatherwax and Carpenter along with others returned to BeKakt's Teachers College Wednesday.
Evelyn Pessman was guest of honor at her eleventh birthday party hosted by her parents Mr and Mrs Joe Pessman last Thursday after school. Activities included games with prizes for Blanche Seim Bernice Kress and Pearl Rawlins. A luncheon featured pea salad baked beans sandwiches pickles cocoa with marshmallows ice cream cake and wafers. Guests included Evelyn's relatives and friends many gifts were received for future birthdays.
The Masonic hall hosts an April Fool's dance this Friday evening with Irve Martindale's orchestra providing music. A strong attendance is expected as dancers enjoy the festive occasion.
Geisingsa sy new cafe opened to the public this week run by Mr and Mrs Charles Geenger It is described as modern and appealing on Thomson's Main street The establishment will offer meals lunches home baked pies pastries and a line of candy and tobacco It will also serve as the agency for Strandsdale Farm Products handling ice cream cottage cheese butter pasteurized milk whipping cream and sweet cream The decor is noted as tasteful and inviting and the Geisingers invite the public to visit
Mr and Mrs C H Jenkins will leave Friday for an indefinite stay at Savannah Missouri where Mrs Jenkins will be a patient at the Cantier Institute under Dr Nichols Mr Jenkins will be relieved at the depot by a man from Galesburg as they do not know how long they will be at the institution in Missouri
This week workers prepare for grading on Route 80. Men have moved their houses and machinery to Koutsen farm and are ready to begin. Mule teams from Geneseo, Illinois, are expected today. Local labor may be used, with contractor support from Jas Geneseo. Ben Wagner Vern Williams Guy Brown and Will Bennett are among Thomson men employed on culvert work. Sunday School class party Enlivened by Louise J. Lewis at her home with Mrs. E. O. Heamer hosting. Ruth French and Arlene Adams win prizes.
Mrs. John Schade is bedbound with grippe while her daughter Glendora helps at home. Mrs. George Bower remains in Jane Lamb hospital with pneumonia though showing slight improvement. Charles K. Gwitzer visited Jane Lamb hospital for a recent examination. Wesley Martindale returned home after hospital care. Mrs. Seve Martingale has regained the ability to be up. Millard, the local telephone night operator, is absent sick with Kealy Orcalt covering. O’Meall is very ill at the Caroline Mark home in Mt. Carroll. Archie Gaar ill at home with parents Lawrence and, and Etta Geisinger confined to bed.
A card party will be held Wednesday evening April 6 at the Ma'Some hail under the auspices of the committee of 0.E. 300 will be played. Refere nts 2R served.
A large group of melon growers met at Potter Bros elevator to hear state and university experts discuss watermelon breeding, crossing, and inbreeding. Speaker Mr. Miller outlined trial work, expected eight year timelines, and criteria for a top No 1 melon including color, rind, flavor, size uniformity, and early maturity. The plan includes field experiments on Bayard Cole land and seed shipments for test plots to growers.
York Township plans a spelling bee at the local grade school this Friday afternoon at 2 30 to select a champion to represent York township at the county contest in Mt Carroll in April. The winner, if not graduating, gets $25 and advances toward state and national contests with prizes totaling 2500 and a Washington trip.

Lois Carroll hosted a weiner roast at Ed Williams grove for seventh and eighth graders from 4 30 to 6 30 Tuesday evening marking her fourteenth birthday. Thirty four attended. games were played, and refreshments of buns weiners and cake were served.
Friday March 25 friends of the Legion Auxiliary met at the Lewis home with Mrs Gladys Cate and Mrs Ethel Lewis to sew target rags for the U S Veterans Hospital. The Savanna unit received 18 pounds of sewed rags and 20 pounds of unsewn rags from Thomson ladies on Monday. Several Savanna groups are sewing including a group at the Savanna Ordinance Depot.
The Church Of Christ reports a busy week with Friday April 1 church night at seven, program at eight, and visitors welcome. Bible school had 91 attendees despite muddy roads. minister preached He Has Risen. Arlene S. Ores and Lois Green sang He Arose. Norman French will lead CE on April 3 with a new program. Fifteen attended the young people’s monthly social. Sunday evening featured the cantata The Triumph Song led by Herbert Ores with Miss Zugachwerdt accompanying. twenty in the cantata impressed all despite bad weather. Committed on back page.
Walter E. Brown a York township native died suddenly at 2 30 pm Thursday at his Temple City California home of a heart attack He was born May 15 1869 on the Brown homestead near Argo He married Etta Lord October 20 1897 and leaves two surviving sisters Mrs George Bower and Mrs Frank Rush a brother Chase Brown and a grandson Curtis Thompson Jr The funeral arrangements have not been received at press time
