Babson Park Florida March 21 outlines how national prosperity hinges on production and fair sharing of goods. It predicts fewer labor disputes in 1947, cites wage trends across industries, and argues for free enterprise with checks and balances to protect the American way of life.
Freedom Home Bureau unit met Thursday afternoon March 20 in the home of Mrs. Ed Kloepping with four visitors present. New member Mia Earl Guenther joined. Major lesson Home made Cleaning Agents by Miss Dorothy Footitt. Minor lesson New Vegetables by Lillian Katzenberger. A humorous poem and several games followed. Next meeting at Virginia Tallman's home. Meetings now begin 1:30 sharp instead of 2.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Landheer arrived in Morrison last Friday from Camp Hood Texas where Mr Landheer was discharged. Mrs Landheer is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Brandt. Evan Harris of Milwaukee Wisconsin spent the weekend with his parents Mr and Mrs Den Barris.
Mr. Van Zee from Milledgeville reports to Carroll County Advisory on Springfield meeting March 7. Illinois Public Aid Commission discussed economic rehabilitation to reduce dependency, forest industry, reforestation, and small factories to aid Southern Illinois. Counties convert poor farms to nursing homes. Rennick Laughlin Bills allow private pay patients into county homes and extend Old Age Pension and Blind Aid.
A Thursday evening shower honored Mrs. Wayne Kaufman the former Fern Rawlins at the Tom Hand home. Hostesses Misses Rosalie Hand Evelyn Ashpole and Ruth Strubb organized the event with airplane as the main diversion. Rosalie Hand won the high prize and Norma Strubb the low. A delicious lunch was served to a list of guests including Verna Pickens Bernice Hartman Dorothy Johnson Wilma Bielema Jeanne Elliott Norma Strubb Dorothy Williams Diana Diehl Lois Voss Betty Lou Wit and Mrs Hand. The honoree received lovely gifts.
Herbert Krahn of Savanna Illinois has been promoted to sergeant in the Illinois State Police effective March 19 announced by Springfield Chief Harry S Curtiss. He replaces Sgt Hugo Leaf of Rockford who resigned March 15 and will oversee district one covering Carroll Jo Daviess Stephenson Whiteside Winnebago Ogle DeKalb and Lee counties with Sterling headquarters.
Thomson Briefe announces Miss Margaret Smith will leave Friday for Cedar Rapids to visit friend Donna Holding and attend a wedding. They will then go to Green Bay Wisconsin for a week with Donna's parents before returning to Thomson for Easter. Sunday guests in the Richard McGinty home include Mr and Mrs Charles McGinty of Thomson and Mrs Fitch.
A Rockford Social Security field representative will be at the Mt Carroll Post Office from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and at the Savanna Post Office from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday April 3 1947 to handle Old Age and Survivors Insurance claims or provide information. If unable to attend, write to the Social Security Administration in Rockford Illinois for information or an appointment.
Carroll county Farm Bureau completed its annual membership drive from March 11 to 18 adding 62 new members, bringing total membership to 1140. A kick off was held March 11 with a banquet March 18 attended by 160 people including new members and their wives. George Istner of the IAA grain market division spoke. New members were signed in Far Haven 15, York seven, Lima three, Freedom two, Wysox three, Woodland five, Salem seven, and Mt. Carroll seven.
Carroll county non farm homeowners project 515 600 dollars in 1947 for repairs and modernization. About one third to one half of dwellings will be improved with painting roofing and plumbing work. The Tile Council of America cites easing restrictions and materials as factors for a record year.
Mr and Mrs E H Gholson of Savannah attended the State Convention of the Illinois Chiropractors Research Bureau in the Rogers Hotel Bloomington. Lectures were given by Dr Dave Palmer Davenport Iowa and De Loss Walker former Liberty Magazine editor along with Mrs F C Ells demonstration of the Cicro Dynamete c A Women’s Auxiliary formed. Officers elected include Mrs John Hoiaser Bloomington president Mrs J H Cooper Rock Island vice president Mrs M W Nugen East Peoria secretary treasurer. Directors include Mrs E H Gholson Savannah Mrs S G Brown Princeton Mrs Frank Beemas Alton and O E Hudson Chicago. About 500 chiropractors and wives attended including banquets and business sessions. The note adds that the new Naval Reserve offers a two week training cruise yearly and directs to Navy Recruiting for details.
State highway workers near Mt. Carroll and Stockton note beaver, long thought nearly extinct in Illinois, have returned to the area between Mt. Carroll and Stockton. East Plum River backed up threatening Route 78 about 10 miles north of Mt. Carroll as workers found trees felled across the stream by beaver. A special permit from Springfield was required before disturbing the animals or their homes under state game laws.
Judge George C. Dixon granted divorces Monday to Bessie Green of Savanna from Russell Green, to Geneva M. Haring of Savanna from Harold F. Haring, and to Vera R. Millerschone of Lanark from Henry C. Millerschone. Four defendants pleaded guilty and received probation, including Elmer Manon, 76, and John Sandberg, 62, both of Savanna, for vagrancy, on three years probation. Lloyd Sunbom, 52, placed on five years probation and banned from Lanark home during that period for issuing a fraudulent check. Edward Myers, 18, of Mt. Carroll, placed on five years probation for larceny. Two Mt. Carroll minors indicted for larceny released pending army entry medicals.
Carroll county farmers face a firm March 31 deadline to submit 1947 Farm Plans with no extensions. Exemptions only for land or farming-interest transfers. J W Erdmier, county committee chair, warns ACP assistance requires an approved Farm Plan and explicit practice requests.
Carroll county American Legion council schedules its March meeting for March 27 at Shannon Legion Hall. Freeport’s Jack Griswold, second division commander, will attend per Commander O H Emryre. All posts urged to send a strong turnout.

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Davis Loechel 41 Milledgeville were held at 2 p m Tuesday in Shirk funeral chapel Milledgeville burial at Oaknell Memorial Park north of Sterling She died of pneumonia at 10 35 p m Saturday in St Francis hospital Freeport after two days illness Born February 4 1906 near Mt Carroll daughter of C Frank and Lena Volz Davis She attended Walker school lived most of life in Milledgeville community Surviving are her parents and four daughters Jacqueline Joyce Wilma Nona
Ladies of the Black Oak Grange will meet April 10 in Chadwick Grange hall to clean and rearrange the library. Those with books to donate or loan should bring them to the hall that day or contact Mrs Charles Gordon Jr. for arrangements.
Sarasota Herald-Tribune lists Lyle Dambman among 232 students at Sarasota High on the honor roll for the first six weeks of the new semester with an 87 or better average. Lyle is the son of Mr and Mrs Anthony Cambman of Chadwick, wintering in Sarasota.
Heavy snow Monday disrupts roads and disrupts utility services across the area. Draft registration cards become invalid after midnight March 31 as the national selective service act expires, though local offices may stay open briefly. War years saw up to three clerks. postwar cuts reduced staff to the chief clerk.
County farm contracts approved Friday for a 32 by 64 foot barn to replace the fire doomed structure. Construction to start when weather allows and finish by June 15 at an estimated cost of 8000 dollars. Oscar Daehler of Chadwick handles carpentry, W E Bailey lumber and Rhodes Bros tile and blocks, Senneff and Way supply lumber, all Chadwick based. A 22 by 30 foot garage for tractor, truck and car is also planned at the county farm.
State conservation department reports deer numbers in the Rock River valley near 1600 based on an aerial survey by the Illinois natural history survey. The rapid growth since a 15 year start on a private estate prompts reduced numbers by trapping and relocation due to crop damage and traffic hazards. Open season is not favored as a solution because dense population and high powered rifles pose safety risks.
Mr and Mrs Norman D French announce the engagement of their daughter Martha to Dr William Snyder son of Dr and Mrs Byron J Snyder of Fulton Miss French is a senior at Northwestern University and graduates in June Dr Snyder is an interne at Massachusetts Osteopathic Hospital Boston Mass The wedding will be in early fall
Miss Mary Louise Meyers and Miss Vila Gochenaar were entertained at a Saturday supper by the Meyers and Reiff families of Milledgeville. The Deets Halfman visit marked their 27th wedding anniversary. Williams and Roll Williams spent the weekend in Warrenville with the Bernie Divelbiss family.
Edward Green spent several days in Madison and Milwaukee planning to continue college work. Mrs Geo Schmaling Miss Esther Schmaling Leland Schmaling and Mr A G Freeman attended the National Flower Show in Chicago. Lester Wall and wife welcomed a daughter. Rev Sherman of Albany Methodist church preached here Sunday night. Some mud roads becoming impassable. Mrs Kate Gleason visiting daughter Mrs M Turney.
Spring arrived Friday but a heavy wet snow blanket followed, bringing nearly three inches of accumulation in northern Illinois. Dozens of vehicles skidded on slush, many ditched off the beaten path, and power and telephone lines suffered outages in Thomson Chadwick Mt. Carroll and surrounding areas as crews worked to restore service amid drifting roads and continuing showers. One collision on Route 78 left two drivers shaken but unharmed as outages affected ROUTE 30 corridor transport delays lingered into Tuesday.
A Thomson fireman’s dance held last Friday drew a large crowd and good time for all. Luther Geisinger and orchestra provided music. Officials reported a profit of 67 dollars to go toward purchasing a new fire truck arriving soon. The next Thomson dance is set for April 25 by American Legion Post No 1025. Tickets will be 75 cents.
Mrs. Carl Robinson reports the death of her cousin Joseph Bohm 46 of Elizabeth in a Stone Lake Iowa accident on March 12th. A bricklayer by trade he resided in Elizabeth and is survived by brothers Dewy Lena and Willis Elizabeth plus other relatives. Bohm often visited the Robinson home in Thomson.
Jasper L. Lacey and Mary E. Cain of Morrison united in marriage in a single ring ceremony performed by Justice of the Peace Glenn Craddock of Morrison Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses were Mrs. Marvin Holesinger and Mrs. Ethel Cain, step-mother of the bride. Parents are Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cain of Morrison and Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Lacey, proprietors of the Malvern store.
Mr and Mrs William Odell will be entertained at dinner on Saturday at the home of her son Herold Knight in Clinton to honor Mrs Odell birthday Other Odell children include Lewis Knight of Clinton two sons and a daughter in Sterling and a son from Moline expected to attend
