Scout Council Names Harold Johnson to Staff in Freeport

Harold Johnson known as Skipper joins the U S Grant Council Boy Scouts of America as staff member for Stephenson and Carroll Districts. He and his family move from Wabena Wisconsin where he directed a private boys camp for a year and a half. Johnson has 18 years of Boy Scouts registration since joining at age 12 and earned Eagle in 1935 after serving in Wisconsin Illinois and Chicago as a unit leader and neighborhood commissioner.

County 4-H Club Rally Draws 150

About 150 boys and girls of Carroll county attended a 4-H club rally March 17 at Farm Bureau hall in Mt. Carroll pledging anew to do another great job in 4-H in 1948. O F Gabe district 4-H leader assisted and gave a short talk on benefits. Stunts were performed by several clubs.

National Guard Camp Planned In July and August

More than 10,000 Illinois National Guardsmen from sixty communities will take part in their first post war 15 day encampment during July and August 1948. Brigadier General Kenneth Buchanan announced the plan. Infantry units will train at Camp Ellis near Macomb Illinois while artillery and anti aircraft units will train at Camp McCoy Wisconsin and Fort Sheridan Illinois respectively.

Kipnis Family Returns From Three Month Western Trip

Harry Kipnis, wife and daughter Roberta, and Mrs. Kipnis’ sister Miss Ethel Harrison of Chicago return from a three months vacation in Phoenix Arizona. They visited Lester Galet in Phoenix and David Kipnis’s family, toured Los Angeles Catalina Island Tucson and other western locales before a Wisconsin stop where Kipnis bought three loads of cattle to start weekly livestock auctions.

Savanna Couple Wed In Community Church Rites

Savanna Miss Wilma Jean Ferris daughter of Mr and Mrs Dewey Ferris and Glen Edward Brunner son of Mr and Mrs Philip Brunner were married at 2 pm March 18 in the parsonage of the Community church Savanna. The Rev A L Gibson performed the single ring ceremony. The bride a Savanna native and Savanna high school graduate is a telephone operator. Brunner a Savanna native works for the Milwaukee railroad. After a short wedding trip they will live with the bride grandparents.

Petition Calls Special Election On Milledgeville Unit District

A petition was filed in the office of L. E. Bruci seeking a special election to form a Milledgeville area community unit district. The map covers the current Milledgeville high school area with added Whiteside county territory and part of Wysox’s Chambers district. The petition will go to Carroll and Whiteside county school survey committees before further steps.

Bulldozer Accident Injures Savanna Worker

Savanna depôt employee Savanna Walter Haring, 34, was struck by a bulldozer Friday afternoon. He suffered a broken left leg and three broken ribs and was taken to Savanna City Hospital for treatment.

Immunization Program To Run March 31 At Lanark School

The PTA sponsored immunization program at Lanark School, begun March 10, will continue Wednesday March 31 at 9 a.m. announced by Margaret Handlin, R N, County Public Health Nurse. Children due include those who had initial injections of the combined whooping cough and diphtheria vaccine and the first plain toxoid. Smallpox vaccination date to be announced later.

Lund given probation after guilty plea in replevin case

Clarence O Lund 34 transient pleaded guilty in circuit court to a charge of issuing a fraudulent check and was placed on probation for five years by Judge C Dixon. He must serve 60 days in county jail before probation and was fined 300 which will be paid in installments. The report also lists several property transfers, marriage licenses, a divorce, and a condemnation-suit jury in Carroll county with a site dispute for Lanark High School.

Train Service Reduced by Federal Order Through Savanna

Starting Monday four Burlington passenger trains through Savanna were discontinued under a federal order cutting coal burning services by 25 percent. Trains 51 and 52 St Louis to Savanna carried Thomson mail, leaving only a single daily mail run via a southbound morning train. Trains 53 and 54 Chicago to west coast were dropped. none stopped in the county except Savanna, likely minimal local impact.

Fred Rhodes Heads Cancer Fund Drive

Carroll county ranked third in Illinois corn yield per acre for 1947 despite dry July and August. The county averaged 51 bushels per acre, behind DeKalb 54 and Whiteside Stephenson 62. In 1944 Carroll led the state with 63 bushels per acre along with Whiteside and Stephenson.
