Valentin Boerner 81 former circuit clerk died Sunday at his Mt Carroll home. He served Savanna city offices and as Savanna township supervisor before being elected circuit clerk in 1929 and serving seven terms until 1936. Survived by wife Mary Ruth two daughters Marie Hanson Louisa Boerner and son Fred Boerner and many friends. Burial at Mosquito Hill cemetery.
The second distribution of state school funds was made by the county superintendent. The allotment totaled $2,933.69 for the year.
Vital statistics report five girls and eleven boys born in February while fifteen deaths were recorded. Most decedents were over sixty with only two under sixty. a youth age nineteen died by suicide and a baby died shortly after birth. Fred Kaney of Forreston secured a bridge erection contract over Camp Creek on the same road for 7460.90 dollars. Four other bids were submitted on the bridge project. Work is set to start when weather permits.
County liquor commissioner Robert Carson and Sheriff Ray Westfall led a week old investigation resulting in the arrest of William O Leary operator of The Blockhouse on Route 80 and Denver Allen operator on Route 88 near Milledgeville. They face charges of operating dance halls without a license in county court filings by State's Attorney John L Brearton. Both men posted $500 bond and were released.
Mr and Mrs Ray attend a singing concert where Mrs Ray praises a tenor for holding a last note for two minutes. Mr Ray retorts that he once held one of his notes for two years.
Rural electrification gains attention in Carroll and Davie ss counties with a March 21 session in Elizabeth High School. Speakers include R R Parks J Walter Marquardt and G C Faltenwald. The program aims to form a cooperative with a $5 lifetime membership to expand service beyond current five percent coverage.
About 100 delegates and members from Carrall Daviess Ogle Lee Stephenson and Whiteside counties attend an all day session hosted by the Lanark Woman's Club. Carroll county supervisors met Tuesday in regular session at Mr. Carroll. They seated new member Lewis A. Oyster of Savanna Dowis to fill Hans Johnson’s vacancy. They approved reports of the March grand jury and clerk bills, the school and county farm reports, and the county farm inventory. A state highway bureau note on Millergeville Peto road routing was discussed. County highway head S. C. Campbell reported progress with highway officials. The board planned to allow war committee members to review eras campaigns and to attend the funeral of Val entin Boerner. The session adjourned after claims were approved.
Carroll county Republican central committee met in Mt. Carroll to pick ten delegates and ten alternates for the April 13 judicial convention in Freeport. They will back judges Leon A. Zick of Oregon and Harry Edwards of Dixon, with no fixed third candidate unless a Carroll county man is named.
Mount Morris will host a district vocal and instrumental contest on April 1 with solos ensembles bands orchestras and glee clubs. About 50 instrumental solos and ensembles three boys glee clubs three mixed choruses five girls glee clubs and 25 vocal solos and ensembles are entered. Judges will be E. Mear of Whitewater Wisconsin and Chicagoers Neil Kjos and Paul Yoder.
The county treasurer paid out a total of 1180 on livestock killed by dogs last week, including 47 for witness fees. Carroll county’s 1938 livestock claim covered 120 sheep eight turkeys and one cow.
