Frank A. Steele longtime Carroll County resident dies early Tuesday. He served as town marshal, worked at Stove Works, and lived in Davenport and Malinda John areas. He married Emma A. Stober of Charbon, had brothers Hinder Steele and Gage, and half brother Eugene. Funeral services at Christian Funeral Home Mt Carroll, interment at Oak Hill.
Funeral services for Joseph Grim of Hudson were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 from the church. Rev. H. V. Riggs presided. Military honors were accorded Grim with posts from Hudson and Waterloo participating. Grim, born June 30 1846 in Somerset County Pennsylvania, died February 25 after a three month illness. He served in the Pennsylvania cavalry and witnessed Lee's surrender. He spent years in Lanark Illinois and Hudson Iowa, with two marriages leaving several children and grandchildren.
Clarence B. Houghton born Oct. 11, 1848 in Ustick Township Whiteside County Illinois, died March 8, 1943 in Portland Oregon at 94 years 4 months 25 days. He lived in Thomson from 1892 to 1920, earlier near the farm he owned at birth, married to Jane French, survived by son Dwight E. Houghton and other relatives, with funeral plans being arranged locally.
N heniy a Carley and classmates Heniy S Srhina Lanet Lay Helman Kenneth Hebler and De Disk Rapp competed in a spelling contest. June Hilman placed second. The group hosted a Valentine day party after the visit of Mie Traam and others. Major note: a schoolmate Healman may transfer to Tehan school. Alice Switzer listed as teacher.
The ampmng association shipped a carload of cattle from Burling to Alexander Connover in Chicago. T H Kustes shipped two cows, the rest a car with twenty cattle and two cows shipped by Prins and Stagg. Mr. Prina accompanied the car.
Miss Ruth V Woessner U H S I teacher wed Mr Lloyd Leary of Jesup in a double wedding Saturday evening at a local Evangelical church. The event included Paul Woessner and Christiana Kukhnan as other couples. A wedding supper followed with pink and red snapdragons in arrangements.
Thomson and Lanark grade school teams from Carroll County were eliminated in the opening round of the Sterlins vs OM C tourney. Thomson Wallace of Sterling fell Thursday while Lanark lost to Central of Sterling by 34 to 10. The Thomson squad fought a tough battle against the larger Sterling leaders but could not overcome the deficit.
