M'Ville Road Improvements Bid Let by Carroll County Board

Carroll County Board of Supervisors held a June meeting approving a $5,013 bid from Woodland Township for the County Township building and lot. They rejected lower bids on another tract near Chadwick and planned re-advertising. Actions included salary changes, jail and sheriff shop repairs, and a $1,000 annual raise for Sheriff Miller as Supervisor of Public Safety. Approved a $206,211.12 blacktopping contract for Milledgeville to Coleta, county share $83,500, despite bids exceeding estimates. Adjourned to August 12.

Hustons Attend 2 Day Conference on Curriculum Planning

Mr and Mrs Wendell Huston joined more than 80 Illinois county superintendents and assistants at the Windermere Conference on Curriculum Planning held June 19 and 20 at Stouffer s Inn Oakbrook Verne E Cracker spoke at the opening session with Martha Slyter chairing the conference Dr Marvin English delivered the keynote address Other speakers included Virginia Schnepf Harold Fuller Dean Berkley Genevieve Langston Anthony Torres and Frances Hewitt Mrs Huston was elected to the planning committee for the 1970 conference with Dr Joe Min LaSalle County Superintendent serving as chairman

Local Teachers Attend ISU Adult Education Workshop

Sixty teachers including Richard L. Duty of Milledgeville and J. Berry Williams of Mount Carroll were selected for a three week adult education program at Illinois State University from July 7 to 25. Dr. Francis R. Brown will direct the institute funded by a 35000 grant under the Education Professions Development Act. Participants may earn three graduate or undergraduate credits and receive a 75 dollar weekly stipend plus a dependency allowance. Tuition and fees are waived.

County Cancer Fund Drive Over the Top

Carroll County Cancer Society held a quarterly dinner in Lanark Illinois with Dr L B Hussey presiding. Fund drive total reached 6466 52 with final goal over 7000 after all districts finish. New board for 1969 includes Hussey Buckwalter Caron and Sterk with next meeting planned for Milledgeville October 16 1969.

Robbed Again at Diehl Oil Station Break-in Reported

The Diehl Oil Company station was broken into during the night, discovered Friday morning by Bob Bristol. Entry was gained through a broken side window. a quantity of cigarettes and five tires were stolen.

Thomson FFA Members Attend 41st State Convention at UIUC

Six Thomson FFA Chapter members attended the 41st Annual State FFA Convention June 10 to 12 at the University of Illinois. Delegates were Guy Plumley and Larry Wagner, with Dwayne Hook and Steven Houzenga receiving State Farmer Degrees. National VP Tom Johnson spoke at the final session.

Local siblings win state FFA and FHA honors

Dwayne and Cheryl Hook, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hook of Thomson, received the State Farmer Degree and the State Homemaker Degree at the Future Farmers of America and Future Homemakers of America conferences at the University of Illinois Urbana and Illinois State University Bloomington. Their mother sat in on degree ceremonies June 12 and 13, with family members cheering their achievements.

Thomson Girls Fall To Clinton Job Corps In Tight Game

Thomson's girls lost 25 to 17 to Clinton Job Corps girls in front of a large crowd. The teams traded runs early with Clinton leading 10 in the first inning before Thomson battled to a 13 to 11 lead by the third. Ed Nelson praised his Clinton squad and a rematch at Clinton Job Corps field is hoped. A July benefit match with older ladies was discussed, with more details to come. Thomson's next game is against Fulton on June 30 at Thomson field.

FFA Chapter Leaders Embark on East Heritage Tour
