Babson’s postwar plan guides merchants for after the war

Babson Park Massachusetts June 12. He urges businessmen to prepare a postwar action plan as European and Asiatic conflicts expect to prolong until after the 1944 election. He advises surveying profitability, cutting nonessential lines, standardizing costs, and holding back on expansion. He warns profits will hinge on service, fewer lines, and strong cash reserves with cautious hiring and debt avoidance.

NIPE APPOINTED MT CARROLL COUNTY CLERK

William Nipe of Mt Carroll was appointed county clerk to replace the late W R Watson after Carroll county officers met in special session. The vote was unanimous. Nipe has 17 years as deputy clerk under Watson and 6 years under A B Adams. He performed duties during the interim but cannot finalize certain actions until Springfield confirms the appointment.

Sturgeon Catch Nets 49 Pounds Near Savanna

Forrest and Charles Conley of Savanna report a 49 pound sturgeon caught in the Mississippi River just south of Savanna. The fish was cut into steaks for sale at the Conley family fish market in Savanna.

Aviation Cadet Donald Ashpole Dies in Arizona Crash

Aviation Cadet Donald J. Ashpole, 21, of Thomson, was killed June 16 when a training plane he piloted crashed about 35 miles from Lake Field, Arizona. Wreckage near Wickenburg was identified, parents notified, body returned to Thomson for funeral with military escort and rites planned Friday afternoon.

Carroll County Deaths Lew H Feezer 84

Lew H. Feezer, 84, died at 4 a.m. Monday in Savanna city hospital after a two week stay. He resided in Savanna for about 15 years and is survived by daughter Mrs. Gladys Nightingale of Savanna, grandson Aviation Cadet John Nightingale of Monroe Louisiana, and sister Mrs. H. C. Buffington of Morrison Iowa. Funeral services were held in Savanna with Rev. H Foster Whitney presiding and burial in Oak Hill cemetery Mt. Carroll. He was born November 13, 1858 in Mt. Carroll and earlier worked in a Mt. Carroll newspaper office and operated a hotel there. He married Mary Smith of Mt. Carroll in 1891. she died in 1898. He later moved to Savanna in 1919 and worked at the ordnance depot. He was a brother of the late Cal M. Feezer, former editor of the Mt. Carroll Mirror-Democrat.

Death of Mrs. Wilhelmina Haas Randecker at Mosquito Hill

Mrs. Wilhelmina Haas Randecker, 69, died at 10 a m Friday at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, John Rath, six miles north of Savanna. She had been ill two years and bedfast five weeks. Funeral services were held Monday at the Bath home and at 1:30 pm at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church in Massbach, with burial there. She was born April 27, 1874 in Derrida township, Daviess county, and married John Randecker Sept 10, 1891. Surviving are her son John W. Randecker, eight daughters, two sisters, two brothers, and numerous relatives.

Army worms infest many corn fields in county

Farm Adviser M. P. Roske reports serious army worm infestations across nearly all townships, with affected farms in Chadwick Freeman Law Lanark and Savanna areas. Bait with bran Paris green oil is recommended, as worms hatch from timothy plowed under to attack young corn and a parasite fly is also reducing numbers in Whiteside County.

Carroll county Board of Tax Review Sets 1943 Schedule

The Carroll county board of tax review met in Mt. Carroll and named Charles Gordon as secretary and Marion Hartman as clerk. Charles E. Kingery serves as ex officio chairman with I.8 Williams of Savanna the other member. The board begins work Tuesday July 6 with weekly meetings Mondays thereafter from 9 30 a m to 2 50 p m for 1943 tax assessment complaints. Complaints filed after July 26 will not be considered.

4-H Club Roundup and Farm Wareau Picnic at Savanna

The annual Carrell county 4-H club roundup and Farm Wareau picnic will be held Friday, August 27, at Old Mill park and in Weidman’s field east of Savanna. Sponsored by the Savanna chamber of commerce, the program includes an entertainment lineup, a premium list, a notable speaker, and four WE members displaying projects. Girls to present a revue in the afternoon with a band concert and additional numbers promised.

War Meat Committee Organized in Carroll County

Carroll county new war meat committee met in Mt. Carroll with Eric Tillman to outline duties. Charles Harris heads the panel with Loyal Law as vice chairman and Lawrence E. Bruch as secretary. The group will issue slaughtering permits, review existing ones, set quotas, and curb illegal slaughterers to ensure sanitary methods and fair wartime meat distribution.

Savanna Gets Branch Ration Board Office

A branch office of the Carroll county war price and rationing board will open in Savanna in the comptroller's office. Applications for ration forms and program information will be available, but no ration books. The office operates 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays and 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Miss Josephine Esposito will oversee.

County Clerk W R Watson Dies Friday Morning In His Home

Carroll county court records note the death of County Clerk W R Watson on Friday morning at his home. The June term of circuit court opened with indictments against Fred Bys how of Savanna for taking indecent liberties with a child dated May 28 and August Henry Busing of Savanna for an infamous crime against nature dated February 17. Both defendants remain jailed on bonds of 3500 and 5500 respectively. Also listed: marriage licenses issued for Earl G Brandenburg and Dorothy L Smith, and Glen Pauley with Ruth Kingery, Lawrence and Robert Rice released from jail after arrest for shooting two dogs at Thomson. Petit jurors advised not to report until summoned. Court will reconvene June 30 with several cases scheduled for July trials and appeals.

Lloyd Douglas Named Head of Frederick Clan

Floyd A. Douglas of Savanna was elected to head the Frederick clan at its annual reunion in Old Mill park Savanna. He succeeds George W. Williams. Federal Duck Stamps On Sale July First

The 1943 44 migratory waterfowl stamp goes on sale July 1 at all first and second class post offices. Stamps cost $1 each and proceeds support waterfowl refuges and migratory bird conservation activities as stated by Interior Secretary Harold Ickes.
