Early nitrogen in fertilizer helps corn seedling roots grow vigorously when soil is cold. Ammonia provides readily available nitrogen, keeping plants active before soil bacteria can form organic nitrogen. A 2 percent ammonia minimum is advised unless manure has heavily fed the land, boosting yield.
