Recreation Big Business at Chestnut Mountain Lodge

Chestnut Mountain Lodge in Jo Daviess County, a once shaky 1960 venture, now grosses about 1 million dollars yearly and employs over 100 residents. It draws 15 000 winter weekend visitors and 5 000 summer weekend visitors, raises area real estate values by about 400 percent, and spurs large land purchases by Chicago investors. The lodge and nearby Galena attractions contribute about 4 million dollars annually, while agriculture still nets 18 million in the county. Local leaders foresee recreation overtaking agriculture as the region’s top industry.
