Washington dispatches report three Mount Carroll men received permanent commissions in the army air force. Major D. W. Grove becomes captain and remains with the air force dental corps in Hawaii. Rus Carson, formerly captain, is named first lieutenant after discharge, and Maurice Ritenour, also a first lieutenant, held a major rank on discharge. Carson and Ritenour were war pilots. Miss Frances Halfman visited Miss Cecilia Hawk for the weekend, returning to Thomson Sunday.

Roy Lester, 60, of Carroll county died June 4 at his sister’s in Sterling after months of illness. Funeral at South Elkhorn church with burial in its cemetery. he had worked in a gravel pit and later for Jordan township highway dept. Survived by two sisters, a brother, and other relatives. Alfred A. Crain, 71, died June 4 in his Lanark home from a heart ailment. He was born in Shannon and married Matilda Miller in 1905. Survived by widow, two children, seven grandchildren, a sister, and four brothers. parents and a half-brother preceded him.
