Fire destroyed the Kipnis sale pavilion in Mt Carroll early Friday morning just before the weekly auction. About 60 cattle and hogs, 100 tons of baled hay, and other goods were lost. 44 heifers and steers, 14 calves, and two hogs died. Mr Kipnis freed 25 horses. firemen saved the office and a nearby building. The blaze was spotted by John Block who alerted rescuers and released about 100 cattle. The pavilion, valued at 5000, was insured for 600. hay insured, livestock covered. cause unknown. He plans to resume auctions and set up a temporary HQ.

Paul J. Lewis a 27 year old colored dining car porter on the Milwaukee Arrow died at 10 50 p m Saturday in Savanna of a heart attack. He complained of pains after arriving in Savanna and died about 15 minutes before help arrived. He was Chicago born and had served in the army with a medical discharge in October 1948. He had been in the Hines veterans hospital since December 1943 with a back injury. His body went to a funeral home and services were held in Chicago.

The 18th district American Legion will hold its 20th annual convention Sunday June 9 at Lincoln school Savanna. Highlights include awards by Lyle Snavely department organization director Kolb trophy by Henry Kolb and a talk by Omar J McMacklin department commander. A parade ends the day with luncheon at noon. District Commander Lyle Wilcox presides and delegates register 9 30 to 10 30 a m. Mayor I R Sanberg will welcome Legionnaires with speakers including Louis Daigle and W J Sully. Attendance expected to be the district’s largest.

Irwin of Freeport at 2 30 p m on Saturday in the Mount Carroll Methodist church The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Hal Francke and has taught English at Lincoln Junior High in Savannah She is a Frances Shimer and Cornell College alum and formerly worked in Chicago The groom is the son of Mr and Mrs R A Irwin of Freeport a 1945 Army veteran with the 2nd Armored Division He returned to Crum and Forster Insurance in Freeport and the couple plan to live there
Twenty Carroll county residents enrolled at the University of Illinois this semester, including 15 men and 5 women. The university reports a total enrollment of 15,817 civilian resident students, with 12,788 on campus at Urbana Champaign and 1,162 in medicine dentistry and pharmacy on the Chicago campus. Carroll county students at Urbana Champaign total 19 with 14 men and 5 women, while one man from the county attends the Chicago campus. Mrs. Sidney Schiff of Phoenix arrived for a visit with her father Harry Kipnis and family in Mt. Carroll.

Coleman Miles of Mt. Carroll enters Stantonian Roseville Burser a two year old English bulldog from England. The dog won the open dog class and was named winner's dog in Fort Wayne Indiana, earning two points toward a champion rating. Miles also entered Pink Lady who won first in the novice bitch class.
Harmon L. Woodruff, 72, died at 7:30 a m May 29 at the Savanna home of Mr and Mrs James Drain where he had lived for eight years. Private funeral services were held at 1:30 p m Thursday in Savanna cemetery with Rev Arthur C Monkman officiating. He was the son of Isaac and Sarah Woodruff and was a lifelong Savanna resident. His parents a sister and two brothers preceded him in death.
George DeForest Delp 41, a former Savanna resident, perished in a LaSalle Hotel blaze that killed 58 as dawn broke. Newly discharged from the army, he had been living at the hotel while working in Chicago. His mother Mae Delp and brother R M Delp live in Savanna. another brother Joseph in Mt. Carroll.
