A state highway letter to J. J. Sheridan indicates Route 171 from Thomson to Route 78 is included in the 1936 paving program, contingent on federal aid. Bids will be invited upon fund allotment, with grading nearly complete and Johnson Creek bridge superstructure nearing finish. Concrete paving could begin by late summer, aiming for completion before cold weather.
Four people were hurt last Thursday night two seriously when a Ford V-8 crashed into a culvert wall two miles north of Mt Carroll on Route 78. Driver George Beckenkeller 24 and his mother Laura 52 suffered major injuries while Henry Beckenkeller 52 and Alice Freeman 15 had serious and critical injuries. The car was traveling about 80 mph when the driver tried to light a cigarette and skidded into the cement wall. George escaped with minor injuries.
Newcomer of Lanark was reappointed as a member of the Carroll County board of review of tax assessments by County Judge M. Grove. He will serve the next two years along with C. P. Greivon of Savanna and Miles S. Rogers of Elkhorn Grove. Bogers is chairman. The board will announce dates for taxpayers to appear with complaints on 1996 tax assessments once organized.
Nineteen old age pension applications were approved last Thursday by Carroll County Public Welfare Commission and sent to the Springfield state office. Eight percent of applications in the county have been approved, per Supervisor of the commission. Eleven certificates indicating grant have been received by applicants in Carroll County. No checks have appeared yet, with officials noting checks are issued 350 days after the certificate date.
The 271 765 acres covered by reports this year 1936 soil conservation program has finished listing data from 1800 worksheets prepared for Jing. Results were sent to Lee Gentry at state headquarters in Champaign. The county's total farm land 271 765 acres matches close to the 271 978 acres in 1944. Listed 129 891 acres with soil depleting crops in 1936. Expect base acreage figures to be announced late this week and statements prepared for each farm. Farmers may choose to participate to gain program benefits.

Ward Weidman’s herd of 18 Holsteins led production with 1268 pounds of milk and 42 pounds fat. overall group average was 914 pounds milk and 32.3 pounds fat. Sixteen cows were dry. Other member herds include Wm. Werner, Stransdale No. 1, Edwin Keim, and John Derrer with varying milk yields and fat totals. Sixty three association cows produced over 40 pounds fat. twelve cows were deemed unprofitable and sold.
Miss Lillian Clemmer retires after a 53 year teaching career in Lanark and Carroll County schools. A surprise program at Lanark honored her 33rd year in the eighth grade commencement and chronicled a long life of travel, civic work, and devotion to students.

Heavy manday rainfall caused the eastern end of the new Johnson Creek bridge on Route Five to drop into the stream as temporary cribbing failed. Western end remains in place but needs securing. workmen began cabwork and jacking to reset the structure. Several bent steel beams must be replaced.

Sheriff Eber Shepherd and four deputies raided taverns outside city limits Saturday night, confiscating three slot machines in operation. George Letuders of Thompson, a renowned Carroll County stockman, shipped 63 exceptionally finished belted hogs to the Chicago Stock Yards. They averaged 276 pounds and sold at 82.85 per cwt, the highest price for their weight class at Chicago on May 27, reflecting rising demand and strong market interest. More than 10,000 hogs have sold locally in the past two months, with prices higher than a year ago.
An examination for a general scholarship in the University of Me Hingis will be offered by Carroll County. School graduates may apply in the office of the county superintendent of ward days. Wallace Weise of Chadwick and Blanche Freeman of Molledey have signified their intention to take the examination.
An 88 year old man died of a heart attack Monday in Lanark. Funeral services were held at the home and at the Church of the Brethren with Rev. Leatherman officiating. Survived by widow, two daughters Ruth Hewk of Manchester Indiana and Marie Martin of Loadson Ray Lanark. two sons Milton of Shanmvay and Kemper of Coppeniah Washington. and numerous grandchildren.
Rees Spellman 21 was abducted from his home near Chadwick by three men who forced him into his car and tied him to a tree about eight miles south of Rock Falls. Sheriff Eber Shepherd and Deputy State Fire Marshal John Engels investigate while Spellman remains jailed for safety as authorities pursue leads and assess threats.
Four Lanark men escaped death Sunday night when their car left Route 52 near Old Mill Park east of Savanna, rolled over multiple times, and occupants were scattered. Mark Sites, driver, and Wales Geary were hospitalized with injuries. Chester Bowers and Earl Garland sustained minor injuries and were sent home.
Treaty five Iowa youths from the tri-cities will join the United States during June. The Davenport recruiting post seeks single, depen dency-free men aged 28 to 35 of good character for vacancies in the unit at Fort Des Moines. About half the unit is motorized. opportunities arise for those wanting training and advancement.
