Rain drenches the area as farmers rush to corn and hay, Ronnie Starr and Danny Kness toured the south painting two smoke stacks. Meantime the fire station nears completion and Ray Morelli is honored at a Old Mill Park farewell. Crowds attend, scouts plan an overnight trip, and Me lon Day preparations begin for Sept 2–3.
The Thomson Lions Club outlined plans for Melon Days on September 2 and 3 at the local ball field. A steak fry, free watermelon, rides, concessions, and acts including Don ald Red Blanchard are set, with program books and ads to be sold at the gate. Community volunteers are urged to help with tickets, concessions, and watermelons.
The Review 80 Club lists eligibility for membership to those aged 80 or more who are residents of Yorkeen or former Yor Township residents or born in York township. Members must submit a life synopsis including name address birth date birth place parents siblings upbringing occupation marriage children and health. Honorary cards will be sent to official members. Founded 1941 by F L Stagg with officers and executive board listed.
Billy Stebbins of Savanna is visiting his sister Mrs. Donald Kramer this week, staying at her home and spending time together during his trip.
Chadwick residents including Mr. and Mrs Ed Mest and others enjoyed a picnic at the Handel cottage and called on Mrs Ellan Brand. Groharing of Prophetstown plans September move to California. Clinton and Freeport visitors plus two week vacationing families from Charlotte and Elgin spent time at local cottages. Picklum returns to their Davenport visit home and Newport relatives.
A Friday steak fry at Merle Atherton Sr. home honored Mr. Atherton's birthday. Present were Richard Atherton and family of Savanna, Helen Vance of DeWitt, Merle Atherton Jr. and family, Dolly Atherton, and Leila Mitchell.
The Churches Work Community notes William Kendall pastor duties and church school at 9 30 AM. Morning worship at 10 30 AM. Young People meet 7 PM. A roller skating party for church youth is planned at Hi Lo Savanna Friday July 27 meet at the church at 7 PM. Baptist and Methodist services listed with multiple Sunday times and BYF meeting. Catholic services in Fulton and St John Savanna with several masses listed.
Dr. B. J. Snyder of Fulton was among 37 osteopathic physicians named life members by the American Osteopathic Association at its annual meeting held July 11 to 14 at the Drake Hotel. Eligible honorees must be at least 70 or have practiced osteopathy for 50 years or more.
The infant daughter born to Mr and Mrs Melvin Badtke formerly Joann Jurgens of Savanna has been named Brenda Jolene. The Review previously listed the name as Glenda.
Thomson area residents hosted a string of visitors this weekend. John Shepherd and sons from Baltimore visited Mrs. G A Smith for two weeks. Several families from Clinton Morrison and Davenport dropped by for dinners and shared weekends with local households.
Miss Lorraine Helle daughter of Mr and Mrs Sheldon Helle of Savanna and James Sites of Savanna were united in marriage at 11 AM Saturday July 4 in the Community Church at Thomson Reverend William Kendall officiated A wedding supper followed at Indian Head Inn The newlyweds will reside at 502 Beech St Big Elm Park Savanna
Harold M. Elliott resigns as York Community High School principal effective August 1. He will be the new high school principal in Mac Gregor Iowa, and he and Mrs. Elliott plan to move soon. Elliott has led York for 20 years since September 1941.
Several ladies gathered at the Methodist parsonage on Wednesday morning for a coffee hour to surprise Mrs Wilbur Nicholson on her birthday. Attending were Mmes Donald Sippel Robert Plumley Donald Schott Harold Wilt a Marken and Paul V. Wilt.
Several households report visits and travel among relatives. John Root checked into Hines hospital for a routine exam while Kyle Rawlins and Iris Miller join Mt Carroll hosts for meals. Carl Korbar begins a new post in Lake Mills Iowa with plans to relocate. other trips include a Seattle World’s Fair tour and a California vacation.
John P. Floyd has signed a contract to lead Thomson school districts 174 and 201 as administrator over both grade and high schools and began duties on July 16. He holds a bachelor from Eastern University, a master's from the University of Illinois, and has completed doctoral coursework while pursuing a thesis. Floyd has 32 years in education, including ten years as Alexis schools superintendent, plus prior superintendent roles in Williamsville and East Lynn and tenure as principal and superintendent in New Holland. The Floyds have one daughter who recently graduated from Illinois and works in Rockford. the family plans to move to Thomson.
Mrs Archie Green hosted a pink and blue shower for her daughter-in-law Mrs Robert Legel of Clinton. Thirty guests from Clinton Fulton Sterling and Thomson attended as shower games awarded prizes to Mrs French Mrs W G French Mrs Henry Legel and Mrs Wilbur Reader. Refreshments included cake jelly coffee and koolache and Legel received many gifts.
The Roggendorf Leavens reunion will gather Sunday July 29 at Old Mill Park Savanna with a noon picnic dinner. Attendees should bring dishes to pass table service and their own beverages. Report marriages births and deaths of the past year to secretary Mrs. Bertha Decker Mt Carroll.

Miss Connie Simmons visits relatives in Sav an a and Vincennes while many guests converge at the Stage home in Mt Car roll. Several couples share meals and celebrate birthdays with neighbors from Fulton Lanark and Rock Falls over recent days.
Cub Scouts of Thomson Troop 252 plan an overnight camp out Friday at Marquette park Savanna. Each scout must be accompanied by a father with own gear food and water. They will travel by boat to the campsite with life jackets provided. Boat rides every half hour. A wiener roast is planned and breakfast Saturday morning. Return home Saturday morning.
Funeral services for 67 year old uth Marie Likes Hussong were conducted at Reynolds funeral home with Rev. Kendall officiating. Burial followed in Erie cemetery. She was born August 22, 1894 in Fenton and married William Hussong in Morrison on November 18, 1916. They lived in Rock Island Cottonwood and Argo Fay where she resided at her death. She was active in Methodist churches, WSCS and the World War II Mothers. Survived by husband son Clifford and three grandchildren. preceded by her parents and sister Isca Crossman.
Marine Private James E. Baker, son of Mr and Mrs Jake H Baker of Thomson NL, graduated July 27 from Sea Duty Indoctrination School at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. The four week course covers firefighting damage control and general military matters. Upon completion Baker is assigned to Pacific Fleet ships for duty.
Morrison couple Mr and Mrs John Hook and Mrs Grace Hook of Fulton hosted Monday evening guests. Grayslake IL guests Misses Joan and Linda Titus joined Mr and Mrs Mervin Marshall for Monday luncheon. James Keller becomes Chicago Daily Newspaper boy replacing Gary Korbar. Friday supper guests at Lyle Greeley's cottage included Ricky and Sandra Camp Godfrey IL and Mrs Marion Wheeler Vada Carroll and Lyle Williams. Ted Johnson and children visited M J Strukhoff home Sunday afternoon.
Recent hospital notes list Mrs. Webster Ross of River View as dismissed from Savanna hospital after surgery. Claude Grim had Monday morning surgery at Savanna and is improving. Albert Lynch remains hospitalized at Jane Lamb for three weeks. Henry Strauch discharged Sunday from Jane Lamb after a week as a medical patient. Ralph Hopkins from Riverview visited Veterans hospital in Iowa City on Monday. Jodie Dimmick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dimmick, ill with measles. John Bielema of Route 1 Fulton underwent surgery at Jane Lamb Wednesday. Ned Spencer, patient at Rock Island Sanitarium, spent weekend with family at Argo Fay. Mrs. Harold Bousman of Clinton, daughter of Mrs. Archie Green, hospitalized at Jane Lamb for several days.
About 300 Thomson area residents gathered at Old Mill Park Savanna Tuesday evening to honor and bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Ray Morelli. A potluck dinner, friendship cake and silver horseshoe centerpiece featured before games a community sing and tributes. Mr Morelli, Thomson grade school principal, will become Metamora Ill principal next year while Mrs Morelli, a Thomson teacher, will move with him.
West End Home Bureau clubs announce a picnic at the White Eagle Homemaker’s camp in Adeline on Wednesday August 1. Members should meet at the Thomson telephone office at 8 AM and bring a picnic lunch. Transportation is provided and a 50 cent craft materials fee will be charged at the camp.
The Golden Rule class of York Baptist church held its annual picnic at Palisades park in Savanna with 37 attendees. Miss Rita Geddes, a guest in the Heitman home, won first place in Minnesota with her essay sponsored by the VFW and now entered in the national contest. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Kilpatrick and daughter Jean of Elizabeth and Mrs. Jessie Gillespie of Maywood Illinois.
The Philalm Lee reunion met Sunday at Kenneth Bryant's farm near Savannah with 46 guests. The oldest attendee was James Phialmlee, the youngest Jackie Sue Hall, and Mrs. Cecil Hall traveled farthest from Ark. Activities included cards, badminton, and volleyball. The group voted to hold the event annually on the third Sunday in July and noted the birthday of James Keller.
Rev. and Mrs. Phili W. Anderson and their four children moved Tuesday from the Baptist parsonage in Fulton to Eveleth Minnesota. Anderson has signed a contract to teach the coming year at a junior college in Eveleth after serving ten months as interim pastor of York Baptist Church.
Mr and Mrs Clifford Mac Lean and Norman of Berwyn and Miss Susan Aviatti of Hillside were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs Eldon Hickey and family. Mrs Vada Carroll and Vera Hickey returned home with the MacLeans to spend the week. Several other area relatives visited including Mr and Mrs Irwin Kilpatrick and Jean of Elizabeth and Wood at the Hoff home in Gar den Plain. Augrt Prins and family attend a birthday for David Geerts of Fulton at the Smith home in Garden Plain. Gene Smiley and Michael of Rockford visited ERnest Rathje's family. Elva Connor of Clinton also joined the Sunday gathering.
Miss Viola E. Schultz announces a need for nursing and sheltered care facilities in Carroll County for aged and infirm residents. Individuals willing to operate a home or provide care for one or two persons may contact Welfare Service Committee members. nonlicensed plans require genuine welfare interest.
All county 4 H and agricultural clubs attend a share the fun night on Friday July 27 at 7 30 p m in the Thomson wy school gymnasium Judges will select winners to advance to the district contest
Fifty guests registered Monday July 23 at the Beauty Salon in the Hoak building on Broad Street. Mrs Sherman Correll hosted with assistance from Mrs Orville Berner and Miss Esther Correll. Door prizes included a $12 permanent to Mrs Elmar Lang and a hair style package to Kathy Hartman. Lynn Carbaugh won a hair cut.
Rick and Jean were Sunday afternoon visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Murray, sharing a casual call and cordial conversation at their home.
