Babson’s Weekly Report from Gloucester Massachusetts July 18 discusses a fish handlers strike, wage demands, and who should run the fish business. It contrasts union versus owner control with piecework as a potential fair pay method and calls for production gains to lower prices.
The Illinois Agricultural Association board reports the corn crop is about two weeks behind normal, with estimates of 70 to 80 percent of last year's yield possible. Wheat yields are strong in the southern half, oats are light, and soybeans look normal. pastures are unusually lush for July.
On the cover of The Business of Farming summer issue a three color photo shows Hickory View farm near Elizabeth owned by George Kaul father of Clayton Kaul of Chadwick. The photograph was taken from Kauls Hill about three miles west of Elizabeth on Route 20 showing the farm buildings in foreground the owner and a son Marshall with a dog. In the distance the landscape extends miles north and east with fields trees and distant farm buildings.
County Clerk records list multiple license issuances including Wilmer L. Smith and Doris Schneider of Mt. Carroll, Ommer Spanier of Richmond IA, Mary Collins of Savanna, and several other couples in Mt. Carroll Savanna and nearby towns. Entries close July 25 at the Illinois State Fair. Entry blanks are available and provided on request. Exhibitors’ ticket price this year is $1.50, down from $1.80.
Mrs Kenneth Krempel thanks friends for cards fruit and flowers given during her hospital stay and appreciation is expressed for the kindness shown.
Camp Lowden, a summer camp operated by Blackhawk Area Council, received a steel storage building donated by Watt Publishing of Mt. Morris. J. W. Watt and his son Leslie presented the gift dedicating it to the memory of Florence E. Watt for her support of Scouting.
The Blackhawk Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America announces Lewis W. Kehr as field executive for the Sauk district, covering Whiteside, Lee and Ogle counties.
Carroll county 4-H girls host Achievement Day at Chadwick high school on July 20 with clothing judging at 9 30 a m and foods at 10 a m. Ninety six girls display home economics projects including dresses foods and flower arrangement while a county chorus practice occurs in the morning and a style review with demonstrations starts at 1 80 p m.
The Nebraskans group announces the second annual Nebraska Picnic to be held Sunday at Lawrence Park Sterlins. Officers urge all Nebrackans to attend. Mrs Howard Baker, secretary treasurer, reports many inquiries. Charles Demeier of Milledgeville is president. A picnic dinner will be enjoyed at noon CST with town tuneh and table service required.
The Illinois State Fair opening features 4 H competitions on Friday and junior livestock judging Saturday. Beef calves, dairy cattle, vegetables, and clothing revues are listed plus $7,500 in prizes for Veterans day bands and units. Governor Green will present eight special cups as part of the closing fireworks. A TB vaccine bill, BC G, backed by the University of Illinois and Chicago sanitarium, aims to advance tuberculosis control. This disease causes thousands of deaths annually in Illinois.
Chicago July 18 With the season near halfway Will County Illinois Farm Bureau Baseball league champions in 1946 face tough District 2 opposition. The Joliet area has yet to win a game this season. Standings to date cover seven of eight leagues with District 8 not yet underway including Saline Randolph and Montgomery counties.
Unadilla Farm Chadwick NL sold a registered Holstein-Friesian bull to Jas W C Pogue Exeter California. Change of ownership officially recorded by the Holstein-Friesian Association of America Brattleboro VI. Association issued 17 465 registry and transfer certificates to Hoothvestoars during 1046.
Martha Wool Bower, 66, died Monday at the home of her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Lawrence Haring in Savanna. Born February 26, 1881 in Carroll county she had lived in the county all her life. Surviving are three sons Harold Lewie and Orin. five daughters including Mrs John F Samuth and Mrs Willi t Shatre. three brothers two sisters and seven grandchildren. Her husband Ralph Bower was killed in an auto accident 15 years ago. Funeral services set for 2 p m Thursday at a Savanna funeral home with burial in Center Hill cemetery.
The Fahre Mann Canning Co plant reopened Monday to harvest a late pea crop after last Fridays closure. About 100 000 cases were packed from a short season with scarce labor. The sweet corn crop will also be short due to frequent rains during planting season.
A Mt. Carroll man Glen Ashby discovered his car ablaze Friday morning after hearing the horn blow. Firefighters arrived after he found flames around the horn button and radio, and the blaze destroyed the interior, starting apparently from a short circuit.
The 18th district Woman's clubs annual meeting convened last Thursday at White Pines State Park near Polo with district president Mrs. Roy Hinebaugh in charge. Mr. and Mrs. John Jamieson departed for Chicago Monday after a Chadwick visit and will proceed to Tampa Florida to visit their son Jack and family.
The 41st annual Illinois Summer Picnic will take place all day Saturday July 26 at Bixby Park Long Beach California. Thousands of Illinoisans from Southern California are expected to attend with a noon basket dinner and food and drinks in the park. At 1 pm the Long Beach municipal band will headline with Lt Governor Goodwin Knight as guest speaker and county twisters will help attendees locate home city or county friends.
The Kness clan gathered Sunday at Point Rock Park Mt Carroll for their eighteenth reunion with 53 members and three visitors. Edd Kness of Chadwick was reelected president and Mrs Cecil Green of Mt Carroll became secretary treasurer. Oldest member Will Kness of Audubon Ia and youngest Teddy Lee Imel of Mt Carroll attended. Four marriages and nine births since last year were noted.
Unusually cold weather delays corn growth in the area with plant development lagging. By midweek a hint of warmer temperatures appeared though nightly lows still fall near or below 50 degrees causing many homes to rely on stoves or furnaces for comfort.
Four people suffered minor injuries in a head-on collision two miles west of Mt Carroll Saturday evening. Mr and Mrs B L Peck of Mt Carroll and Mr and Mrs Ernest Flynn of Aurora were involved. Flynn told Sheriff Henry Truninger that he swerved into Peck's lane when a vehicle in front slowed to a near stop.
County Superintendent L. E. Brudi states that the rural schools in the county again face a teacher shortage. He notes that nearly half of the country schools operating this year have not yet secured teachers.
Mrs Bayard Lewis and daughter left Wednesday for La Grange to visit Mr and Mrs Clifton Bennett. Miss Lewis will take the state beauty culture exam in Chicago Thursday. They will then visit the Lewis and Thompson families in Michigan. Jenny Brown of Fulton hosts Jerry Niles and Dwayne McKinsey East Moline and Larry Williams Clinton at a steak dinner. Jerry joins the New York Giants at Superior Wisconsin in August. Mr and Mrs Marius Olsen and son Maron and Frances Hamilton spent Sunday with Net tie Diess and attended a farewell for Katherine Olsen and Doris Leysen who depart for Round Up Lodge Denver. Katherine has worked two years at Schierbrock Motors Davenport. Mr and Mrs Paul Heusinkveld returned home from Camp Idlewild near Marcell Minnesota.
Tommy Bartlett, well known announcer of Meet the Missus, will be featured at Polo's Airshow at the Polo airport on Sunday Aug 3 to announce the day’s events. A helicopter demonstration and passenger rides are planned along with a daring low altitude stunt pilot thrilling the crowd.
The Doden clan held its annual reunion Sunday at Eagle Point Park Clinton Town with sixty nine attendees including three guests. Oldest member Joseph Grim of Chadwick and youngest Gary Lee Doden. Members from Chadwick Sterling Rock Falls Clinton Morrison Fulton Milledgeville Toulon and Chadwick village park were represented. Frank Kahler and spouse named president and secretary with plans for a 1948 reunion in Chadwick village park.
Carroll county's board of tax review reports trouble equalizing property assessments this year. After averaging township- collected values the board finds wide variation with some townships at a third to half of the state average. It may summon assessors and supervisors to help devise a solution.
Richard McWorthy of Savanna was bound over to circuit court Tuesday morning at a hearing before a Savanna police magistrate on a charge of operating a motor vehicle containing a bottle of liquor with a broken seal. He was released after posting bond of $500.
Farmers across the area are cutting oats and expect harvest if the weather stays favorable for another week.
Mrs. Margaret Bennett of Wheaton and daughter Mrs. Hazel Green of Fulton spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brenneman. Mrs. Katie Bennett Cedar Rapids visited. Lloyd Fagan’s son Jack and family hosted. Grandson Pat to stay briefly. Mrs. Max Henniger Savannah left for Los Angeles. Katie Bennett Cedar Rapids spent time with Mrs. Etta Krier. Jerry Wiebenga hosted Sunday supper guests including the Fossetts and Bakers family.
