Jiabson presents four statistical arguments for America’s social and economic priorities. He urges higher birth rates, soil and resource conservation, a return to manual labor, and expanded bomber production, calling for voluntary sacrifice and a spiritual awakening to save the nation.
One of the largest groups of men from Carroll county ever to be accepted for military service was inducted last week. The local selective service board released names of men accepted and their service branch, listing Army, Navy, and Marine Corps inductees from several towns including Mt. Carroll Lanark Savanna Hanover and Milledgeville. Fay N. Grayless and Robert E. Diehl are named among Marines.
Savanna city council plans to request an increase in federal funds for a nurses home at Savanna city hospital after bids exceeded the $16,700 allotment. The lowest bid of $18,086 from O Jorgensen and Sons was tentatively accepted pending grant approval. The council will also rebid the old hospital on Sept 7, after rejecting a July 6 bid of $4,500 from A L Boothby as too low.
Col. Paul G. Armstrong announced new rules delaying induction for 18 and 19 year old students in high school if the draft would occur in the final half of the academic year and the student files a written request. The exemption applies only to bona fide summer session students in the last half of their year. vacations void the delay, and no authority exists to extend the postponement beyond the academic year’s end.
A heavy thunderstorm Friday evening damaged many oats fields here, flattening grain and forcing some farmers to mow rather than bind. Observers note delayed harvesting and potential yield loss due to the downpour in multiple locales.

The annual Lena Methodist camp opens Friday July 23 and closes August 1 with nine days of general meetings and nightly services led by Dr. Arthur Klontz of Detroit along with Dr. John W. Holland of Chicago. The Young People's Institute runs July 26 to August 1 with daily classes, vesper services, and crafts led by church leaders from Lena and nearby towns. The Women’s Societies of Christian Service host July 28 to 29 and July 31 programs in Freeport area with talks and demonstrations by local ministers and leaders.
The Black Oak Grange met Thursday at the Grange Hall. Ward Olsson and Wilma Schneider earned their 3rd and 4th degrees becoming full members. Three new membership applications were received. The program included The Star in Our Window and Soldiers Speak with other readings and talks. Refreshments followed. next meeting set for August 5 at the Grange Hall.
A Sunday picnic at Water Works Park Morison hosted by Mrs Myrta Groharing and family members honored Fred Groharing who left Tuesday for Chicago to join the army. Betty Baker of Clinton attended as a guest. Visitors with Mrs Ida Frederick included Mr and Mrs George Clay and daughter Viola Dunn of Savanna. Barbara Fenley of Clinton visits this week with Marilyn Carpenter. Berl Roggendorf of Green Island and the Roggendorfs joined supper with Mr and Mrs Gilbert Robertson who then hosted the Roggendorfs for the weekend.
County Clerk issued marriage licenses to Searl Looney of Paxico and Ce Mae Storey of LaCrosse. Annulment granted for Barnes and Gaylord Darrow. George Myers appointed court house janitor in Mt Carroll. Doris Mathews joins county welfare as visitor. Fred Grabow pled guilty to a statutory charge. sentenced to 2–5 years. The report lists multiple warranty and quitclaim deeds across Savanna, Shannon, Lanark, and surrounding towns.
A Ford coupe driven by George Miller north of Savanna veered while he dozed and struck a Dodge sedan owned by Sylvester McWorthy then hit a parked truck owned by A. W. Darnell on north Main Street. Miller uninjured. other vehicle damage noted.
The store building on Main Street in Chadwick owned by Oscar Weber will be sold at public sale on August 21 by order of the county court. The sale, at the Farmers State Bank front door in Chadwick, runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with terms $200 cash and the balance pending court approval. Conservators Joseph P. Weber and Harvey Seim sign the notice.
Mr and Mrs Fred Hinrichs entertained Mr and Mrs George Hinrichs of Rock Falls over the weekend. Lois Dykstra visited in the home of her sister Mrs Herman Jansma in Morrison. Mr and Mrs Ferbert Almquest and family of Savanna were Sunday guests of her parents Mr and Mrs Frank Brown. Mr and Mrs H E Green of Morrison called on Mrs Adeline Grohar wing Sunday afternoon.

Carroll county farm machinery committee issued permits July 12 17 to purchase new equipment including electric pump jacks several named farmers, jet type water pump, milk cans, threshing machine, grain elevators, horse drawn corn planter, 8 foot grain binder, side delivery rake, power mower, hay leaders and combines with a list of individual recipients.
The Illinois war council announces a statewide blackout drill Friday July 30 at about 9 30. Counties and local communities will obscure most lighting while railroads and utilities may remain lit. Vehicles must stop with lights off to avoid hindering emergency vehicles during the three signal blackout.
Dr. D. W. Grove of Mt. Carroll has been commissioned a first lieutenant in the U S Army Air Corps and ordered to report July 27 in Kansas City Missouri. He opened his Mt. Carroll dental office in 1935 after graduating from the University of Illinois dental school.

Savanna Mrs Belle Wicks 72, died at Savanna city hospital after a lingering illness. Funeral held at her home with Rev H Foster Whitney. burial in Savanna cemetery. She was born April 16, 1871, in Savanna and ran a Savanna dry goods store. survived by three nieces and a nephew. Mrs Sarah Mahood 80, Mt Carroll died at home of Mrs Cora Moore. sons Harry and Russell and daughter Dolly survive. funeral delayed for Oklahoma son. Mt Carroll Miss Hattie Griswold 87, died Friday. funeral arrangements made. no surviving relatives.
Corn fields in Carroll county largely look ready for a good harvest with most fields about shoulder high and tasseling. Wet conditions delayed planting in spots but frequent rains and hot weather helped the crop mature, with farmers finishing cultivation and moving to haying and small grain harvest.
Carroll county students join the U of I wartime accelerated summer program. Enrollees include Della L Isenhart Harriet A Isenhart from Chadwick Jeanette Hostetter Esther Merchant Charles W Robbe Melvin P Roske Jr from Mt Carroll and Robert E Howe Franklin M Lister of Savanna. The program emphasizes wartime values and adds new courses to meet war-time needs.
Miss Hazel Wyburn and Alvin Cellar, both of Mt. Carroll, married Sunday at four o'clock in the home of Savanna justice of the peace W G Kent. The couple, attended by Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Arnold, plan to reside near Mt. Carroll with Cellar employed by a construction firm at the Savanna ordnance depot.

A large group of Carroll County men received orders this week to report to an induction station for examination. Those named include Valdimir Warrin Arthur L. Sime, Clarence H. Love, Loyal K. Randeker, Chester W. Bowers, Paul L. Bukbaum, Robert D. Holland, Russell L. Weber, William F. Plattenberger, Arnold F. Mackey, and many others listed.
George Hicks of Mt. Carroll was elected and installed last Wednesday as commander of Carroll County Council of the American Legion for the 1949 1944 year. Other officers named include Harry Engles Lanark senior vice commander Ernest L Frey Shannon junior vice commander Rh M Hartman Mr Carroll finance officer Albert R Anderson Milledgeville chaplain George Hammond Lanark sergeant at arms. Installation was conducted by Lyle Wilcox Sterling with W G Warnock Mt Carroll post commander assisting. County posts reported membership over 100 percent with members from all five posts present.
Rev R H Seitner pastor of the First Baptist Church Mt Carroll and York Baptist Church near Thorson was stricken by a paralytic stroke at the close of union services in Mt Carroll Sunday He was taken to his home and Sunday night doctors feared for his life His condition improved by Tuesday and he was moved to Savanna city hospital for treatment
Harvesting oats on the Cart Maring farm is delayed after a tractor backed onto a binder, smashing the reel and damaging other parts. Mr Maring and his son Nea had prepared to start cutting but the tractor rolled into reverse gear unexpectedly, likely from a bumped shift lever.
A new class of skilled tank mechanics graduates from the Armored Force School at Fort Knox Kentucky. Cpl John D Larson son of Mr and Mrs John Larson Chadwick is among the graduates. Mr and Mrs Chester Alexander Florence and Vernon were dinner guests Sunday in the home of Mrs Maude Alexander.
