LH Girls Exhibit Club Work July 23 at Mt Carroll

About 3120 girls from nine 4-H clubs in Carroll County prepare for the Achievements Day program in Mt Carroll on July 23. The event features sewing club exhibits and yearlong work, cooking demonstrations by two food clubs, a dress review, musical numbers, and judging demonstrations as clubs demonstrate progress from a study program prepared with University of Windis.

Col Robert McCormick to Speak in Mt Carroll

Col Robert K. McCormick publisher of the Chicago Tribune will speak on Americanism in Mt Carroll on Aug 1. Local businessmen plan the event and will invite prominent Republicans including former Governor Frank Lowden former Representative John C McKenzie Congressman Leo Alten and others. A banquet for speakers visitors precedes the program. Boy Scouts from the U.S Grant area will give a short salute on Americanism.

County bands rehearse for August central festival

Members of Lanark Cladwick Morreston rehearse for a festival in Fulton on August 1 2 and 3 under Miss Beth Hower. The tricity girls band and Mt Morris band will join in the annual music event in Chicago. Forreston band plays two days during Fulton centennial celebration.

Shannon Man Hurt Stopping Runaway

Russel Shore a farmer two miles west of Shannon broke his collar bone while stopping a runaway hay team in his barn yard. Neighbor Ray Gross rolled from the road to reach the horse line but was uninjured. Shore pursued, caught the team, and sustained the fracture. It is his second injury within a month from stopping runaways.

Carroll County Legion installs officers at Shannon

Recently elected Carroll County American Legion officers were installed in Shannon. Install ing officer Glenn W. Dresbach of Lanark presided. District commander Henry F. Kolb of Tampico and Lyle Wilson of Sterling spoke. A Freeport drum and bugle corps exhibition followed as officers were named for multiple posts across Lanark Savanna Shannon Mt. Carroll and Chadwick with titles including commander adjutant service officer and surgeon.

Fred Sterenberg Named Whiteside County Legion Commander

Fred Sterenberg of Sterlinewan was elected county commander of Whiteside County American Legion at the recent county meeting held in Morrison post rooms. Also elected were Ralph Rummel, Eric as senior vice commander, Leslie Fadden as Prophetstown junior vice commander, Lyle Devine, T. A. Whitemore, George Wassenar, and a Fulton sergeant at arms. Installation is scheduled for Sterling on October 8 with Sterling post officers also installed.

Savanna High School Board Awards Two Contracts

At a special meeting on Monday night Savanna high school board awarded a contract to B. KR. Miles for repairs at the high school building with a bid of 575 dollars. A separate contract for showers and drinking fountains was awarded to Art Hur Nesbitt for 21 dollars and 75 cents. The board also decided to seek bids for coal supply for the 1925 36 term, with bids to be opened August 15.

Circuit court session Monday and Tuesday was presided over by Judge Manus of Freeport and Judge Sheehan of Galena. Court was adjourned Tuesday until August 8.

Late hatch of chinch bugs appears here

Farm Adviser Roske reports renewed chinch bug activity in parts of the county but expects no repeat of last year’s damage. The worst infestation centers on Louis Schick’s rye and nearby corn in York township where barriers were built to stop the pests. Roske notes rains had killed most earlier hatches and urges continued vigilance to protect crops.

Lanark Man Jailed on Larceny Charge

Alirea Miller of Lanark was arrested Friday and waived prelimary hearing before Police Magistrate Robert M. Brown ing of MS Carrell. He was bound over to the November grand jury and held in the county jail on bond of 1900. Miller is alleged to have stolen 12 chickens from the Sargeant farm near Lanark.

Charles Richter, Former Carroll Res Ident, Dies

News from Mt. Carroll reports the death of Charles Richter at 68 in Pukwana South Dakota last Friday night. Funeral and burial were held there Monday. He lived in Mt Carroll previously and for 26 years in South Dakota. Survived by widow Lena Schleming a son C E Richter daughters Emily Swanson Bertha Widmore sister Mrs James Ely of Mt Carroll brothers Feed of Mt Carroll and John of South Dakota.

Savanna High School Hires Third New Teacher

Sophie Meaghler of Granger, Woeb, has accepted a contract at Savanna High School for a salary of 1050. The new instructor will teach civics economics commercial arithmetic and commercial law. Other new teachers are RL Lar Woreau and Warren Strohecker. A history vacancy will likely be filled next.

County Births Lead Deaths In June Report

County records show twenty births and sixteen deaths in June. Mrs. Jane Davis, 91, oldest county resident, died June 5 at Caroline Mark Home Mt Carroll. Births listed include Merle Kramer and Loraine McCue among others in Savanna and Mt Carroll area.

Milledgeville Farmhand Charged In Colt Theft Case

Joseph Deets a farmhand at the William Feeze farm near Milledgeville was arrested by Sheriff Eber Shepherd. He is charged with selling two stolen colts to a Janesville Wisconsin commission firm on June 20. The owner George Schneider identified the stock and a warrant was issued by R A Bassewittg. Deets hid in a vacant farm house before his capture. He was jailed and later taken to Morrison for a heaving truck witness audition.

Milledgeville Plans Community Day Event Date Set

Milledgeville set September 19 for Community Day with a later detailed program to follow. An executive committee was chosen to coordinate committees and oversee the day’s activities.
