Babson Park Florida January 23 1920s. Babson argues there is no inflation only supply and demand. He says high prices stem from scarce goods and increased production lowers them. He urges reduced spending and higher production, cites housing rents and citrus markets, and advises shoppers to buy surplus items during January sales.
DeWitt overcame Fulton 46 to 34 in an Illowa Conference game at DeWitt. Wallace led DeWitt with 20 points while Lawton added eight for the Steamers. Fulton’s Harvey top scored with 10 in the prelim, as Fulton freshmen defeated DeWitt 46 to 19.
The residence of the late Mrs. Anna Weber in Chadwick is set for auction Saturday afternoon January 1. The sale will involve a single dwelling, with details of bidding and terms to be announced at the Chadwick auction room.
Shannon high school will host the district tournament with four teams Chadwick Thomson Shannon and Pearl City in Shannon district competition. Regional play begins March 2 at Mt Carroll with Milledgeville in Dixon regional and other county teams advancing directly. District play opens February 24.
Thirteen Carroll County Rural Youth members attended district training in Polo Illinois on January 15 sponsored by the Illinois Extension Service and Illinois Agricultural Association. Dr C D Van Hauweling spoke on Brucellosis and recreation training was led by Harriet Ellicott. Carroll County members listed include Ronald Fritz Rosemary Heisler Lowell Toepfer Viola Schultz Forrest Byers Harold Yochem June Pauley Merle Rowland William Beattie Charles Guenzler Irma Pauley Elta Lartz Dora Birchen. Next county meeting February 2 features a box social. council meets January 27 with skating party January 29 in Savanna.
In Oregon Friday night the Oregon Indians defeated Mount Carroll 33 to 26 in Blackhawk conference play. Feaver led Oregon with eight points, while Noble and Law scored eight for Mount Carroll. The halftime score was 12 to 18 and final 26 to 33.
Chadwick Briets and the Shultz family visited the Chester Alexander home in Coleta and Mrs. Nora Bushman in Sterling Public Hospital showed slight improvement. Etnyre and family spent Sunday with Clara Etnyre in Mt. Carroll. Eipper clan joined a Port Byron birthday dinner for Mrs. Glen Murphy. Moritz Sollenberger Lang Rahn group hosted by Bleyers near Lanark. Merlak households and guests gathered for Sunday dinner with Tony Merlak Sr. and Joe Stoler of Sterling also present.
A tax factor of 1.0244 is assigned to Carroll County by the state tax commission, per a notice to County Clerk W. M. Nipe. The multiplier will apply to 1947 valuations, and tax extending will begin. The factor is lower than last year’s 2.8 plus, indicating township assessors’ revisions bring valuations to about 98 percent of the commission’s full assessment.
Lanark Illinois mourns the death of Lanark resident Harvey Snavely 86 son of the late Carroll Snavely. Born December 25 1861 in Lancaster Pennsylvania he lived in Dakota and Shannon before moving to Lanark five years ago. Survived by two children Jacob and Harvey four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral service held at Frank Funeral Home officiated by Dr L O McCart ney smith. Burial in Shannon Cemetery.
Emma Johann 78 of Shannon died Friday at home. Funeral services were held Sunday at the home and Shannon E A B church with burial in Bethren cemetery. Born December 1 1869 in Germany she came to the U S at 14. Surviving are her son William of Polo two daughters Carrie Johann and Alice Shirk at home five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Roy Ely Mc Carroll 60 of Mt Carroll died January 23 in Las Vegas Nevada. Body brought to Mt Carroll for burial. Born June 29 1887 he was son of James and Annie Ely. Surviving are his father two sisters Betha Warfield Mt Carroll and Pearl Seal Wallington DC and brother James Rock Island.
Funeral services for Ray MacMahan 57 a former Mt Carroll resident were held Friday afternoon at a Mt Carroll funeral home. Burial was in Arnold's Grove cemetery with Mt Carroll Legion post military rites. He died Monday Jan 19 at Ashburn General hospital in McKinney Texas. He had been a colonel in World War I and worked at an ordnance plant in Texas. Surviving are his widow Lula and a daughter Violet of Mt Carroll.
Mrs. Anna Weigand visited in Albert Hartman house and returned to Milwaukee on Thursday. Thursday evening guests at Ed Schiener’s home were Harve Schreiner and E R Mest. Betty Arthur and Wallace Geisz of Batavia spent the weekend with John and Mrs. Geisz. Mrs. S S Harter visited Milledgeville with Fay Hawkins. Miles Byers joined Fred Graehling’s supper guests in Polo, with Harry Carbaugh hosting Russell Lewis and daughter Judy of Knoxville.

Investigators near completion of the Savnva Ordnance depot explosion report. The blast on January 21 at about 500 am damaged depots, magazines, and nearby towns across Illinois Iowa and Wisconsin. Crater about 150 feet wide and 30 feet deep, with shattered windows in Hanover Ma n Carroll and Savanna. No casualties reported though many felt the shock within 40 to 50 miles.
Mr and Mrs Robert Larson of DeKalb purchased the Hat and Dress shop in Mount Carroll last Thursday from Mrs Herher Reeves who had run it for 25 years. They will transact future business in Chicago and Mount Carroll ties remain strong. Mrs Larson formerly Charlotte Kensinger graduated from Lanark High School and has seven years in the hat and dress business with their 8 year old son Rennie.
Mrs. Preston Kreider and Sylvia along with Mrs. Asa Kreider Mrs. Filla Fox of Milledgeville and Mrs. Connie Eubanks visited Mrs. W V Provant for quilting. Dinner guests at Mrs. W H Taylor included the Sehreners Unzieker and Sandra. Freda Sehrenner.
A Holstein-Friesian cow from Mt. Carroll, Illinois, owned by John R. Deiver & Son, finished a 309 day test with 533 pounds of butter fat and 15,618 pounds of milk in the Herd Improvement Registry. The cow Ella Man O War Countess was milked twice daily at age 3 years 10 months. Testing was supervised by the University of Illinois in cooperation with the Holstein-Friesian Association of America.

Delays in tax bills possible due to blank forms. Chadwick IF. F. A. chapter met January 15 in the high school ag room with Farm Adviser M. P. Roke and several 4 H members as guests. The group learned the chapter won Section 1 for the late Initiated Project award and viewed a film about 4 H leaders. Vernon Fink received multiple state awards including Meat Animal Blue Ribbon, Safety Medal, State Project Honor Member, Fat Stock Judging, and Blue Ribbon. he also earned county beef award. Gordon won a state Poultry Medal and State Project donor Member. county project champion poultry honors went to another member. Other recipients included Ned Hartman, Earl Stewart, Max Sturtevant, Virgil Handel with a Beef Project Champion award. Junior Adolph won the Chicago Livestock Exchange Grand Champion call cup at the 1947 Round-Up. All who completed last year’s projects and records earned certificates or seals and 4 H pins.
Chadwick Woman's Club met Thursday at Mrs L A Frank's home with 26 members. The program featured piano solo Sheldon Frank cornet duet JoAnn Asay and Herbert Senneff with Louise Molin, plus demonstrations in Textile Painting leather tooling and glass etching metal etching. Dues were donated to the police fund and art fund. Mr and Mrs Orville Harter and daughter Norma visited Polo relatives.
The spring race tightens with a four way GOP bid for state's attorney including Melvin Finer John L. Brearton Robert W Weissmiller and Lawrence A Smith. A two candidate contest forms for coroner with Harvey C Pauley and Richard W MacClanan. Democrats face precinct committeeman battles in three precincts and list numerous Republican nominees for precinct committees across the county.
Sixty four residents attended the Chadwick School adult evening courses in Agriculture and Home Economics during fall and winter. Average attendance was 19 per session. several earned perfect records. Projects included knitting and sewing, with slip covers and chair fitting.
Miss Phyllis Harris, Pleasant Hill teacher, was surprised Friday afternoon after classes when district members visited her school. Attendees included Mesdames Myron Friederich, Lee Hartman, Boyd Handel, Jesse Schreiner, Donald Smith, and several children, plus the teacher's mother Mrs Don Harris. Refreshments followed and she received a piece of silverware.
Mr and Mrs Carl Hartman and their son Earl of Lanark were guests of Mr and Mrs Earl Lars on Sunday night. Mr and Mrs Ted Lego stayed Friday in the home of Mr and Mrs Eve Lego of Lanark. Mrs Carly Kness left Sunday for a week with her brother Henry Forrester of Thomason Georgia.
The Carroll County Livestock Feeders association will hold its annual banquet in Mt. Carroll high school gym next Thursday evening February 5. Dinner at 7 p.m. with R. D. Bray as toastmaster. Howard Gramlich Northwestern railroad agent will speak, with talks by Mark Pickell Corn Belt and C B Watson Illinois Livestock Feeders secretaries. Tickets are available countywide while seating is limited.
Chadwick FFA captures Section I in the state Initiated Project Award for best plan to use a National FFA Foundation cash prize. Members plan to buy a versatile sprayer for spraying livestock, buildings, and weeds. officers listed include President Earl Stewart and Treasurer Jack Janssen.

Fair Haven Home Bureau at Mrs. Ed Schreiner’s home held a Wednesday session with rollcall on a household gadget. Lessons covered Electrical Equipment and Kitchen Storage Space. Miss Given Johnson from Dixon State Hospital spoke on social service work and Carroll County programs followed by entertainment and a social hour.
Lanark High School beat Polo 42 to 21 in a Blackhawk Conference game Friday night. Rife led Lanark with 17 points as the Lanark Fresh Sophs won 26 to 22. Mrs. Arthur St Clair hosted a Friday birthday party for daughter Marlene, with teacher Miss Vera Lewis and others presenting gifts.
Preparations for the 28th annual Carroll County Farm Bureau meeting are near completion for Saturday January 31 at the Mt. Carroll high school gym. Morning program includes reports from officers and committees, vocal numbers, and speakers. An afternoon session features a film, music by local groups, director elections, and an address by I B Parrett of Chicago.
McFadden's tavern in Lanark was burglarized shortly after midnight on Sunday. Cash and several checks were stolen from the till with about 150 dollars missing. Proprietor Edmond McFadden returned 45 minutes later to find a broken rear window and three cases of whiskey left outside. Sheriff Henry L. Truninger and Deputy Harry Miller conducted a routine investigation with no immediate results.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Manning hosted a charivari group at the home of Mrs Manning’s parents Mr and Mrs Walter Jacobs last Tuesday evening. The gathering was social and refreshments were served. The newlyweds were presented with a purse of money.
