Checker Club Organized With Twenty Six Members

The Checker Club is fully organized with 26 members. The club adds 500 as part of the entertainment and notes many from last year rejoining along with new players. Play is usually Tuesday but next week shifts to Wednesday for a high school basketball game. A Milwaukee man sues the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific Railroad Company for 30,000 damages after losing a leg in an Ebner Pa accident. Marriage of Leota Stickell and Hobart Holland announced

Leota Stickell and Hobart Holland are announced as a couple to wed in Ottawa Illinois on September 14 1931. The ceremony was officiated by The Reverend Ste Geo at the Ottawa M B church with attendants Marion Tate of Bloomington Illinois. Mrs. Holland a York Community High School graduate teaches at York Center school. Holland born and raised in Thomson owns a local barber shop. The couple plans to start housekeeping in spring and friends wish them happiness.

Funeral Rites for Paul Hammersten

Funeral rites for John Paul Hammersten, who died Saturday after a brief illness, were held Monday at St Pauls Episcopal Church Savanna. Rev Father Howard B. Ziegler led the low Mass of Requiem. Miss Harriet Correll sang a solo. Casket attendants were Roy Hersey Ole Schmidt William Burke J C Rogers Arthur Hiher and Pat Roche. Burial followed in Lavina Cemeteries. Hammersten will be remembered by many here as Miss Carrie Long a former resident of Thom On.

Sixteen members of the ladies aid society met at Mrs. Delia Melendy’s home for a Wednesday afternoon gathering with lunch served. The Young People’s group will meet Sunday with Ramona Lewis in charge and study Our Part in Sharing. Choir and band practices are scheduled at the Lewis and grade school locations, leading to a 7:30 Sunday evening program. The morning worship and Sunday school times are listed, a leadership aim for youth is noted, and a Savanna youth event is planned for Saturday the 28th, with various written reports due from church organizations.

Three Durkee Farms Sold for Mortgage Auction

The J Durkee farms near Mt. Garrell were sold at public auction to the mortgagee Chicago Joint Stock Bank. The properties include 160 acres farmed by George Shell, 200 acres rented by Chandler Durkee, and 400 acres farmed by Henry J Hartman. Purchase prices were not disclosed.

Rebuilding Burned Iske Farm Barns Nears Completion

On the Starks farm in Iske, George Ottens directed rebuilding after last fall’s fire destroyed the horse barn grainary and cattle barn. The horse barn and grainary are being rebuilt with overhead grain bins corn cribs and an elevator. the intact cattle barn is remodeled to house all cattle, while the old destroyed cattle barn will not be replaced. the farm is owned by an insurance company.

Fred Smith died at St Joseph Indiana after a brief illness. His widow is Mildred Lois Gee, former principal of Thomson School.
