Naaman Diehl, a leading Rock Creek township farmer, was re-elected president of the Carroll County Farm Bureau at the annual meeting. He begins a fourth consecutive term as head of the organization. Seperate sessions for men and women were held, with a joint session in the afternoon featuring talks, readings, and music. 72 new members joined during 1938, increasing total paid members to the present time.
Four hundred three checks totaling $61 636.05 were issued to Carroll county farmers in the 1938 AAA program last week. More checks follow and acreage allotments will be mailed late this week after county officials completed compiling farm data and receive additional program details at Mt Carrell meeting. Community meetings will relay this information to farmers in the coming weeks.
Five persons escaped injury when two cars collided about 10 o clock Thursday night near Cain's confectionery in Savannah. Kenneth Smith of Mt. Carroll owned one car driven by Lyle Green. William Hummel drove the other. Green blamed a blinding eastbound car for the accident. Both cars were heavily damaged and towed to garages for repair.
The State Division of Highways announced plans to spend about $33,500,000 on state round construction and repair this year. The program includes 130 miles of new high type highway paving and 135 miles of secondary surfacing, with 70 miles of grading, 18 bridges, 38 railroad grade operations and seven highway separations. County and city road construction amounting to $19,560,000 will be funded from refunds from the major fuel tax, adding 618 miles of secondary road. Federal funds totaling $5,680,296 are authorized for the fiscal year starting soon, roughly half of which is in the division’s 1939 expenditures estimate.
A plan to transfer ten high schools from the Northwest Milling District to other districts would cut the district from 32 to 20 high schools with vocational agriculture in the curriculum. Carroll County schools would stay in place, while the split would affect Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Winnebago, and parts of Carroll and Ogle counties, creating Illinois’ largest district among fifteen. The plan aims to accommodate rising enrollment in agricultural training and balance district counts, with current schools listed and contests scheduled, including grain and poultry judging at Stillman Valley on Feb 18 and fat stock judging at Ashton on May 6.

Lawrence E. Brudi county superintendent of schools attended a Northwestern Illinois district meeting of county superintendents in Oregon and planned to join a statewide gathering at Champaign.
Cooperative observer James McCray records total annual precipitation at Mt Carrol of 48.23 inches, 15.32 inches above normal, with 129 days at or above a tenth inch. The year saw 3.54 inches in a single 24 hour period, 93.0 degrees maximum temperature on four days, and a mean max of 61.6 and mean min of 41.5 degrees.
The Carroll county board of supervisors approved the regular and supplemental grand juror lists for the March circuit court term. Names span towns such as Washington Woodland Freedom Cherry Grove Savanna York Wysox and Elkhorn Grove with numerous jurors and alternates in both lists.
Seven township supervisors face four year terms across the county on April 4 along with four year terms for township highway commissioners. George C Williams circulates for Savanna supervisor, others may contest elsewhere. In Savanna township the current commissioner seeks renomination with several other candidates in the field.
A mobile testing laboratory begins operation in TWinois to inspect motor fuel quality at filling stations. The unit will test on-site, placarding pumps found sub-standard, as announced by Finance Director L. B. Nudelman.
Merrill Knott, 29, a Clinton salesman, was injured when his Chevrolet coupe left Route 80 south of Thomson and struck a tree. He suffered multiple rib fractures and bruises, was treated at Savanna hospital, and later discharged. Roske cited shifts in county agriculture over the decade, noting crop area changes, soil erosion concerns, and rising 4-H and farm-enterprise activity.
County records show bounty payments for foxes totaling 133 in December and 49 annuals credited December 20 1088. Payments ranged at 4.00 per fox as authorities report, with prior authorizations and local clerk records noting the year long bounty program.
Pimer 45 Stith Williamson and GC W Moore were reelected to three year terms as directors at the Mt Carroll cooperative creamery 11th annual meeting. John Hoover was named director for two years to fill a vacancy.
Notice of condemnation proceedings against numerous tracts in York and Savanna Townships Carroll county filed in U S district court Freeport January 6 published this week in the Thomson Review. The action seeks government title to land in the Mississippi River pool north of Dam No 13. The notice lists owners or heirs as far as found and runs 16 or 17 columns, to be published three successive weeks.
In Clinton county a salesman was killed in an auto accident south of Thomson. The incident prompted a bounty on 371 foxes killed in Carroll county during the past year. The Kelvinator division of Dixon Auto Parts Co. of Dixon Alabama received a $6000 contract to build and equip the W. J. Hummel cold storage locker plant in Milledgeville. The facility features three machines, a halved freezing time, and 150 lockers. Public inspection planned around January 14. Local merchants welcome the project and wish Hummel success.
Officers of the National Bank of Lanark were elected Tuesday night at the annual meeting. Directors named include J. R. Snively, John L. Morris, Fred Guensler, D. M. Blov er and H. H. Butterbaugh. Snively is president, Morris vice president, Kenneth Siler cashier, G. L. Zugschwerdt assistant cashier, and David Wolf teller.
Carroll county supervisors adjourned at noon after a brief morning session handling routine business. They approved a county farm contract for Kyle Turney at 1200 dollars for the year and passed two resolutions including urging repeal of a 1925 1937 farm census law. They also funded tax bounty 500 dollars and state aid maintenance 4400 dollars plus 8000 from the county motor fuel tax for state aid route 16 in Washington township.
Purebred Holsteins head the December records in butterfat and milk production per the Russell Hail report for the County Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Top herds include 10 purebred Holsteins owned by Russell Derrer with 1308 lbs milk and 46.5 lbs fat, and 25 Holsteins owned by Rush Carroll at 909 lbs milk and 35.6 lbs fat.
