The 1940 41 budget aims economy with $8 424 000 000 total, down $675 000 000, defense excepted. Roosevelt urges new taxes to cover defense costs, keeping debt just under the legal limit and prompting Congress to choose between higher taxes or a higher debt ceiling. Multiple obituary notices report deaths across towns including Milledgeville Mt Carroll Lanark and Savanna. Mrs Fred Hutchinson 58 died after a paralytic stroke near Milledgeville with husband Fred Hutchinson among survivors. Wilbur Davies 51 died in Mt Carroll with funeral at Church of God. Anna Frey 89 died in Lanark mother of three daughters and a son. Agostina Drunio 79 died in Savanna after residing in Chicago and Mexico burial at St Johns Catholic Cemetery.
Preparations are near completion for the Mt Carroll Farm Bureau annual meeting with hundreds of members and families expected. Three speakers are slated including C M Seagraves of the Illinois Agricultural Association and Prof J C Spitler, plus Mr Flint of soil conservation. Annals will be read by M P Roske, D F Lower, and Ralph Fahrney. A local orchestra and a male quartet will perform. Dinner is at noon at Mt Carroll High School. 145 county residents will receive 20 year membership pins after dinner.
Rush Carroll of Thomson leads with twenty three purebred Holsteins averaging 1169 pounds milk and 42.3 pounds butterfat. A high yielding cow produced 1820 pounds milk and 83.7 fat. Second place goes to Charles Hogg with 801 milk and 34 fat from 12 grade Holsteins. Fifty five cows in the association exceeded 40 pounds butterfat.
Five directors were elected to the Mt Carroll co operative creamery board at the annual stockholders meeting. John Derrer Charles W Stakemiller and Earl Keim were re elected for three years Clarence Kosher for two years and Loomer Dow ning for one year. Dow ning and Kosher filled vacancies caused by deaths. The article also notes the first international postal conference held in Berne 1874 with 22 nations represented and current postal union membership at 115 handling about 40 000 million letters annually.
Five of seven Carroll county high school squads won Tuesday night play in conference games. Chadwick beat Thomson 26 19. Shannon defeated Milledgeville 30 24. Mt Carroll beat Polo 45 31. Lanark defeated Winslow 29 26. Savanna beat Galena 52 16. Reserves and grades also posted wins for Chadwick Thomson Mt Carroll Savanna Shannon.
Carroll county Farm Bureau marks its 20th year with a Saturday meeting at Mt. Carroll high school. Over 135 members receive 20 year pins. a long list of names reflects continuous membership and new additions were later found to be inadvertently omitted.
The Carroll County board met in regular session approving routine bills and a 6300 dollar allocation from motor fuel tax funds for state aid road maintenance. County finances were reviewed after Peoria Auditor Coker presented his report. a discussion on possible government function changes followed with broad support for minimal reforms and strong township governance.
Regular panel lists eight women and four on the supplemental panel. Jurors span towns including Washington, Woodland, Freedom, Cherry Grove, Shannon, Lima, Rock Creek, Salem, Savanna, York, Fair Haven, Wysox, and Elkhorn Grove with names such as Lawrence Miller May Edwards Ellen Hogg and Charles Merboth among others. Savanna city council, after a special committee review, authorized a 7500 purchase option on the Commercial State bank building and a eight month ground floor lease at 46 dollars monthly. Rent will credit toward the purchase if completed. option decision would go to voters.
A. J. Nesbitt hardware store in Savanna reported Friday afternoon a theft of 110 dollars in currency. A well dressed man entering at 2:40 pm selected items, attempted payment with a check, and fled after Nesbitt counted the cash missing from five ten and four five dollar bills. Police and neighboring towns were alerted.
State Senator Edward E Laughlin announces his candidacy to succeed himself in the 12th district after completing his first Senate term following one term in the House.
Coroner's jury finds Savanna death self inflicted. D. P. Crump resigns as secretary treasurer of Blackhawk Production Credit Association in Freeport Illinois effective December 31 1939 to join Production Credit Corporation of St Louis Missouri. H W Lander elected to succeed Crump. Lander has assisted Crump for three years. Association serves Stephenson Winnebago Ogle Carroll and Jo Daviess counties.
August Kass aged 61 died at his Savanna residence around January 4 from a gunshot wound, ruled a suicide by a coroner's jury after an inquest at Law funeral home. Police found him after a neighbor reported a disappearance. he was alone, with a .22 revolver in his hand. He was born February 24, 1878, and survived by three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held at Law funeral home with burial in Savanna cemetery.
Kenneth Bowers, 21, of Lanark, was sentenced to one to 20 years at Joliet state prison after pleading guilty to burglary of the John J. Senn gasoline station in Brookville last November. He was arrested by Dixon police after a collision and later indicted by the Ogle grand jury. A separate hearing on election clerk and judge appointments in Carroll county began in Mt. Carroll but was continued with no date set.
The state department of education has awarded nine more Carroll County schools certificates of superior and recognized rating. In total 14 rural schools hold certificates this year with four at superior level. New superiors: Chadwick grade school Lanark grade school and Chestnut Park grade school Savanna. New recognitions include Olive Dorothy Dauphin Oak Grove Virginia Croghan Spring Grove Arnold Renner Excelsior. Seven high schools in the county remain recognized for another year.
Stockton high school beat Savanna 31 to 28 on Friday night in Stockton. Fleming led Stockton with four baskets and seven free throws while Werkheiser added seven points. Savanna’s Johnson scored 16 points including six baskets and four free throws.
Frank Heckman of Lanark led midweek cattle trade with 18 head averaging 1167 pounds selling at $11.40 per cwt. The herd fed on his farm fetched strong prices. Hog prices also peaked at $6.00 per cwt as demand broadened, lifting overall market 10 to 25 cents per cwt.
Vernon Weidman broke a bone in his right arm after falling near a tree. Charlie Gordon of Woodland visited here Saturday. Mr and Mrs Charles Gillespie moved to the Webb house on Main street in Mt Carroll. Grace Arthur and Steve Bawder spent last week in St Petersburg Florida. Tyrell Davis was a Saturday visitor in the Colehour and Henderson homes.
Veteran Mt. Carroll grocer marks a 78th birthday anniversary. The Mt. Carroll co operative creamery directors were elected Saturday. First snowstorm of year strikes this community Sunday. High cow for month is from same herd. Nine elementary schools of Carroll county receive state certificates of superior or recognized rating. Total of 18 schools here now have such ratings for present year. Supervisors hold routine meeting Tuesday, but find little business waiting their attention. Eight women named on regular panel of March grand jury named that day. Robber escapes with $110 from cash register of Savanna hardware store. Police of this section search for stranger believed to have taken cash. Savanna man committed death by own action, coroner's jury finds after investigating death of August Kass. Body found Monday by police who were called to investigate.
