Students record holiday travels and classroom topics from Yellow stone scenes to Hamlet. Reports mention Referendum Bill debates, Christmas plans, and school activities with names like Frances Robinson and Doris Boylan noting reporters and events at Chadwick and Savanna.
Mrs. Elice West 52 of Savanna died December 28 1939 in the Thomson Convalescence Home. Funeral services were held at the Law funeral home Savanna with Fr H Foster Whitney officiating. Burial followed in Savanna cemetery. She was born October 14 1887 near Clark SD and lived in Savanna since age three. She married Percy West in 1905 who preceded her in death. Survived by brother Harry Crist and sisters Mrs Pauline Smith and Mrs A Staples. She was preceded in death by her parents husband adopted daughter and one brother.
A chimney fire at the Wilkenson residence in the west part of town broke bricks and burned for a long time before the blaze was controlled. Fire officials report heavy accumulation in the chimney and say rebuilding is required.
Skaters travel to nearby sloughs and pits along Route 80 to enjoy large, smooth ice. With high river water levels and favorable freezing, Thomson could again host festive ice skating parties as in past years.
Mr and Mrs W J Laycock of 1923 Pershing Ave Davenport Iowa will receive the Review as a Christmas gift from Mrs Bertha Holland a local note in the society column.
Thomson News reports several families from Argo Ada Minn and Sharon Wis spent holidays with relatives in Chadwick and at the homes of the Warfields Jen sen and Jensen families. The Welch Heitman and Peterson households were also noted visiting over New Year’s.
The writer thanks all who visited brought flowers fruit letters and papers during the hospital stay. Words fail to express the appreciation for the kindness shown.
A scramble dinner was held Tuesday at Mrs. Raymond Carroll’s Argo home for her birthday. Five hundred provided afternoon entertainment with Mrs. James Mummert first and floating prizes, and Mrs. Don Carpenter low prize. Guests included Mesdames N. R. Kenyon Don Carpenter Joe Melendy James Mummert Fred Nipe Grace Moyer Chas Sack Vernon Kaufman and Miss Lou Moyer.
Argo Methodist Rev J A Foard and Catholic and Baptist congregations list Sunday 9 30 a m services with 7 30 p m union service at the Methodist church. Election of Sunday school officers and teachers set for next Sunday morning. Ladies Aid meeting elected Irene Schick president Harvey Marshall vice president and Will Griswold secretary.
Walter B. Schiel pastor announces York Community changes winter hours for morning services with Sunday School at 10 and Morning Service at 11. Holy Communion will be administered this Sunday. Subject is The Lord's Table. Manual training group meets Saturday at 10, Boy Scouts Saturday at 7 30 p m.
The Thomson Methodist church invites the community to attend the 10:00 a m Sunday School where the pastor will discuss The First Commandment. The union evening service at 7 30 p m will feature Rev Harold R Dude as preacher at the Methodist Church.

Wesley Sack shipped a truckload of cattle to the Chicago market on Monday evening. The Thomson Beauty Parlor operates Wednesdays Thursdays and Fridays with no appointment needed. Lois Hoffman of Chadwick, a student at Emerson rural school, earned the highest Carroll County grade from Lawrence Bruch. Lois is related to L. G. Strauch. Friday visitors in the Ray Erling home included Mrs. Carl Peterson and Darlene and Ardith Anderson.
Mr and Mrs Bruce Groharing welcome a son Bernard Eugene born Wednesday at Savanna hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces. Mr and Mrs Dave McWorthy celebrate a son Richard Eugene born New Year’s Day at home weighing five and a half pounds. Mr and Mrs W E Cardiff of Galva greet a son Robert Ira born Saturday night at Kewanee hospital, with Mrs Cardiff formerly Harriet Zugschwerdt of Chadwick.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Sack of Lanark, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Smith of Argó and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wilt were entertained Saturday evening in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Morgan at Chadwick. The evening featured card games with Mr. Morgan winning high and floating prizes, and Mr. Sack winning low prize.
A young daughter started a fire with clothes at the Spencer residence while Mrs. Spencer was visiting her mother. The room filled with smoke before Buddy Spencer alerted his mother. The blaze was quickly extinguished with minor clothing damage.

A New Year’s Day family dinner hosted by Mrs. Sarah Groharing drew 3 attendees and listed multiple attendees from Clinton Iowa Savanna Lanark Pearl City and other nearby towns with several invited guests unable to attend.
The baby boy born to Mr and Mrs Bruce Groharing at Savanna hospital Wednesday morning is the first baby born in Savanna this year and will receive a shower of gifts donated by Savanna merchants and business houses. Mr and Mrs Frank Smith were Sunday dinner guests at the home of their son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs Lloyd Smith and family at Argo.
Gilbert Holland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edson Holland, married Frances Baldwin of Monrovia, California in a Los Angeles ceremony on December 30. The Navy couple will reside in Bremerton, Washington after a brief transfer from San Pedro, California.
The Thomson Woman's Club will gather at Mrs. Ethel Demaree's home next Wednesday evening for a regular meeting. An instrumental music program closes the event.
Mrs. Arthur Pape received a letter from Mr and Mrs Leslie Fuller of Freeport and former Thomson residents stating their daughter Jean and a Freeport friend left just before Christmas to spend the holidays in Los Angeles. They planned to attend the Rose Bowl game at Pasadena on New Year’s Day before returning to Freeport later this week.
Wallace T. Rice son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Rice enlisted in the U S Army in Peoria last Thursday. He was transferred to Camp Jackson South Carolina to join the 20th Infantry.
Thomson briefs report visitors and weekend stays among Ada Minnesota families. Hazel Torrance and children spent the weekend with Ed and Helen Drake. Ed and Harold Tobey were visitors at Ray Erling's home. Ruby Jean Kline and Doris Lum visited N. D. French. John Ashpole and family plan a Sunday visit while Mrs. Ashpole is in a sanatorium in Ottawa. I family and Roy Heitman visited Frank Smith's home Thursday evening.
Letter from Minnie Ashpole in Ottawa Illinois writes thanks for cards gifts and visits since she was hospitalized. She describes improving health reading material available at the facility and a festive Christmas with Santa and trees as winter winds howl and she hopes to go home before next year.
Paul Lewis and daughter Louise with Robert Rentschler of Fulton spent New Year’s Day with Mrs. Lewis at The Spa health resort in Waukesha. The Thomson Beauty Parlor announces midweek hours. Clifford Dykstra of Fulton visited his parents and extended family on New Year’s Day as Arnold and Harold Wiersema joined the gathering at the Eissens home.
A quiet ceremony in Clinton Ia Saturday afternoon united Miss Johanna Brands of Fulton and Fred Turney in marriage. Attendants were Miss Dorothy Sullivan and John Brands of Fulton with Rev. George W Kreuger officiating. The couple will reside in Fulton with the bride’s mother Mrs John Brands. the bride is a Fulton High School graduate.
The Argo 500 club met at Mrs. Belle Carpenter home with Mrs. Clara Andring hosting and prizes awarded to Andring first Carpenter second and Nipe third. The M E Ladies Aid met at Mrs Undine Pape home with devotionals by Maude Wagner and a New Year resolutions roll call. Thomson lodge 659 A F and A M installed officers including Porter Houghton Carpenter Nachtan and others, with Past Master Roy S Houghton conducting. Altar and Rosary held an afternoon tea at Miss Mary Connell home electing 1940 officers and awarding prizes to Mrs John Smit and Mary Sheridan. February meeting set for Mrs John Halfman.
Dustin Smith of Bradenton remembered the Stagg family at Thomson on Christmas day with a box of fruit. The assortment included lemons oranges tangerines and grapefruit. The fruit arrived in perfect condition and was greatly enjoyed.

Dr Walter Lewinnek, longtime local physician, moved his office equipment to Mason City NL on Tuesday and plans to open a new clinic soon. The move follows his several months of serving the community as surgeon and doctor.
Plans for Thomson annual ice harvest proceed with a Saturday meeting at Franke & Switzer hardware on January 6 at 7 pm. Local ice trust members and interested parties urged to attend to discuss early-stage arrangements as ice thickness ranges from eight to ten inches and may reach twelve to fourteen inches if cold weather holds. A new platform may be built at the pond since the old one vanished.
Mr and Mrs William Heinze of Wacker hosted a Thursday dinner with immediate family. Attendees included John Heinze Adam Heinze Jens Anderson Lyle and Mrs Greeley George Greeley Conrad Maynard Schneider Hal Ashby. Mrs William Heinze visited her son in law Lyle Greeley. W C Fenley returned home after two weeks with Harris family in Harrison Ark. Richard and Donna Fenley visited Seymour Iowa grandparents Chas Fenley. Claire Tobey Princeton were guests with Ray Erling.
