Babson reviews wartime figures showing 1943 national income near 142.5 billion dollars, per-person cash about 150 dollars, and retail sales near 62.9 billion. He notes war costs around 146 billion, production peaks, and lists anticipated civilian recovery, manpower issues, and demobilization impacts.
The OPA announces a work bonus making spare stamp two in ration book four valid for five points for fresh pork and all sausage from Sunday January 2 to Saturday January 15. Stamp not valid for smoked or cured pork.
Walter Geison of Chadwick and Betty Law of Mt Carroll were issued a marriage license on December 30. Julius Bickert of Chadwick received a one year probation after a morning hearing before County Judge O M Grove on his probation application. Rickert pleaded guilty to vagrancy after a ten week-old arrest following a Chadwick quarrel. He had pleaded guilty to the charge and probation.
Permits to purchase rationed farm equipment were issued by the county rationing committee for Dec 27 to 31. Hammer mills went to Christian Schnitzler and Harold M. Cassens. Manure spreader to Fred Wurster. Milking machines to Vernon Lindstrom and Owen Maxwell. Cornpicker to Amur Foraker and Lawrence Greenwora. Grainblower to Charles Carter.
A Sunday morning fire in Savanna destroyed a dairy company truck and storage sheds at the J. W. Wagner garage site and damaged the building. The blaze disrupted electric and phone service for hours as Mt. Carroll firefighters aided, with A V Gebhardt’s uninsured bus and lawn mower parts lost. Investigators suspect faulty wiring in Gebhardt’s bus caused the fire.
Harold Robert Foltz son of Mr and Mrs Frank Foltz of Mt Carroll Illinois graduates from the Naval Air Training Center Corpus Christi and is commissioned a lieutenant in the U S marine corps reserve He received preliminary flight instruction at the Norman Oklahoma reserve air baseაქვს
Albert Sieber of Mr. Carroll is named manager of the Carroll Theatre to replace Brendon Kneale who has joined the armed forces. Sieber began duties this week with Kneale assisting briefly until the new manager settles in.
Mr and Mrs Heber P Hostetter of Mt Carroll announce the marriage of their daughter Marlene to Lt Earl M Cox US Army Air Corps on December 18 in Selman Field Chapel Monroe Louisiana. Chaplain Hubbel officiated and a Monroe USO reception followed.
Thomson residents report visits and gatherings over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Dykstra joined dinner guests in Garden Plain with Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Rus. Ms. Tobey’s funeral was held in LeClaire Indiana with relatives attending. Mrs. Garrett Sterenberg stayed with the French family in Morrison. Eric Marske family and Reka Haas with Alvina visited the Hooks in Clinton on Saturday night.
Clarence Voeckel former Fair Haven resident takes over as clerk of the circuit court and recorder for Carroll County when the office reopens after the New Year. He has served seven years as deputy and was appointed to fill the remainder of John Gelwicks term. Gelwicks left for Geneva to work with a farm credit group.
Lloyd Heefner 62 of Lanark died Monday in Deaconess hospital Freeport from a heart ailment after weeks of illness. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 PM in Lanark Frank chapel with burial in Lanark cemetery. Heefner born January 30 1881 in Mount Alto Pennsylvania. He left Pennsylvania in 1890 with brother Arden, married Nellie Phillips in 1903, she died ten years ago. Surviving daughters Jane Haren Freeport and Esther Kniss Shannon, three grandchildren, sister Mrs George Smith Mill edgeville, brothers John Waynesboro Pa and Herbert California. He farmed then carpentered, most recently at Savanna ordnance depot before illness. The family notes indicate $5.
Samuel Schoenhaar 66 died at 5 10 p m Wednesday December 29 at his Savanna home after a brief illness with influenza Funeral services were Saturday at 2 p m at Fuller Funeral Home with Rev Earl Coble of Chadwick First Lutheran Church officiating Burial was in Mosquito Hill Cemetery north of Savanna He was born February 19 1877 in Derrida Jo Daviess County to Samuel and Katherine Schoenhaar He married Anna Eberle April 9 1908 and farmed in Jo Daviess County before relocating to a Washington township farm for 22 years They retired in 1937 and moved to Savanna Surviving are his widow a son Paul five daughters Mrs Louis F Mennenga Sterling Mrs John Shafer and Mrs Harry Adams near Savanna Mrs Marion Miller and Pauline at home a sister Mrs Fred Wurster Hanover a brother John Schoenhaar Sterling and three grandchildren
Emery D Longnecker 55 died Thursday night December 30 at his Mt Carroll home. Funeral services were Sunday at 2 pm at Frank funeral chapel with Rev James A Foard officiating and burial in Oak Hill cemetery. Born May 11 1888 in Maryland he was the son of Mr and Mrs Wm Longnecker. Surviving are his widow three daughters Mrs Pearl Gums and Mrs Mary Zissler of Mt Carroll and Mrs Effie Zink of Savanna a son William in the army and a stepson Charles Wolf of Mt Carroll
A son born early Saturday morning January 1 in Savanna city hospital to Mr and Mrs Ralph Rogers of Mt Carroll died shortly after birth. Brief prayer services were held Sunday afternoon at Frank funeral home Mt Carroll with Rev Cyrus Pollard officiating, burial followed in Oak Hill cemetery. Surviving are the parents and several brothers and sisters.
Thomson briefs Maurice Bolhous of Fulton spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bolhous. Misses Maxine Birdsall and Gladys Cooper arrived home Friday after visiting Chicago relatives. Miss Mary Darrow returned to Chicago after visiting her parents in Savanna. Sunday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Doden were Mrs. John Hoy and children of Fulton and Cecil Kaul, a soldier from Schick hospital.
County records show 128 marriage licenses issued in 1943, a drop from 1942 but still above earlier years. February had the fewest licenses with three, while April and March led the year with eighteen, and June topped months with seventeen.

Carroll county school authorities face a teacher shortage as three rural teachers resign one from Maple Grove near Shannon and two others, with a Lanark high school instructor also resigning after the first semester. Brudi noted no reasons and replacements are unlikely this season, prompting plans to transport pupils to nearby districts.
Mrs. Rhene B. Law wife of Savanna mayor secured a supply of penicillin last week with Dr. L. B. Hussey and the Savanna ordnance depot medical staff aiding. Both she and Mayor Law had suffered pneumonia for over a week but the mayor was reportedly out of danger before the medicine arrived.
Carter H. Harrison announces the mailing of 1943 individual income tax returns to about 2.5 million Federal taxpayers in Illinois First District. Early filing urged. March 15 deadline applies to civilians and armed forces with extensions for sea duty or overseas.

Illinois hog raisers face a glut as Chicago buyers fail to absorb a flood of hogs. The first two days of the week left 17 000 hogs unsold on Monday and over 22 000 unsold by Tuesday close. Packers urge farmers to curb shipments to ease the surplus.
Gov. Dwight H. Green called a special legislative session starting Jan. 7 to protect the right of Illinois service members to vote in April primaries and the November general election. The session aims to extend the 30 day absentee voting window and revise filing and registration rules for military voters.
New officers of Black Oak Grange were installed at a district joint meeting in Sterling. Elected officers include Charles Gordon master Arnold Farthing treasurer Mrs Fred Olson chaplain Jack Halfman secretary Mary Ellen Halfman lady assistant steward and Mrs Charles Deets.
Illinois assigns a 14 billion dollar fourth war loan quota with Harold Swift stating a total of 905 million to be raised. Chicago and Cook county receive 721,818,400 while the remainder funds the downstate quota. The drive runs January 18 to February 15 with January bond purchases counting toward the target.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Grim hosted a midsweek gathering for relatives and friends honoring Mrs. Henry J. Sites and her son and Miss Isabelle Mackey of Freestone Pa. The event also celebrated Mrs. Grim's birthday with a gift presented by attendees. Guests came from Morrison Milledgeville Chadwick and nearby towns.
Mrs Alta Schildmiller spent Christmas at Western Springs near Chicago with daughter Mrs Mary Tomaka who hosted a surprise dinner. All children attended except 2nd Lt R W Schildmiller of Casper Wyoming who called and sent flowers. other attendees included Lloyd and family, Mrs Glens, Arthur and family, and Vo family.
A 1945 survey shows auto crash deaths in six northwestern Illinois counties totalled 80, down from 1942’s 49 per county figures. Five counties reported fewer fatalities, while Carroll rose by three. December recorded no auto deaths in the area.
Three additional medical examiners for Carroll county were appointed by Selective Service Headquarters. Dr. A. A. Calkins Chadwick Dr. B. P. Colehour Mt. Carroll and Dr. L. C. Hussey Savanna will assist in physical examinations of county men called for service. Previously only Dr. Scholes Lanark served the western area causing long drives for registrants.
The Appellate Court of Illinois at Ottawa on December 28 reversed a Carroll County circuit court verdict directing a verdict for defendant Hazel Stober in the slander suit by Dorothy Metz Guenther, a former Chestnut Park teacher. Case remanded for a new trial. Metz Guenther now teaches in Pearl City.
Mrs. M J Strukhoff and her son Paul visited with her parents in Maquoketa on Sunday. New Year’s supper at Delbert Dimmick’s home included Mrs. Marie Crowe and daughter Yorda of Morrison Mrs. Nelle Schade and Miss Nellie Dimmick and Glendora Schade.
