The Senevet Motors president announced 30,000 layoffs and a three day work week across all plants blaming the recession and drop in car sales. He noted thousands more workers in related industries will feel the impact as production slows.
Three candidates announce bids for county offices at the upcoming primary. A sheriff candidate, a clerk candidate, and a treasurer candidate each outline priorities and campaign plans in statements released this week.
Republicans already filed for April primaries in this county with Ray Westfall seeking sheriff, Walter Watson running for county clerk, and Lulu Ross of Savanna announcing a bid for county treasurer. Incumbents Lawrence Bruci and O M Grove indicated re nomination plans, while no Democrats have announced.
Examinations for county candidates for the office of superintendent of county departments of public welfare will be held in Springfield on Saturday January 8, announced by state officials of the department of public welfare. Candidates will include five nominees from each county where supervisors followed the state old age assistance. Wigson’s request that not more than three nominees be from the same political party is noted. most counties have complied, which Attorney General Kerner called a suggestion rather than an arbitrary command.
Carolyn White Fuller 83 died suddenly at her Lanark home last Wednesday. Funeral services were held Friday at the Cornwell funeral home with ministers from Lanark and Freeport officiating and burial in Lanark cemetery. Survivors include daughters Zoe Feldwisch and Anna Rogers, sisters Emma White and Stella, a brother Henry White, and two grandchildren.
Completion of 1937 tax extension in Freedom Washington and Woodland townships shows total property taxes higher than 1936. In Carroll County 106 elementary districts 37 lowered rates 55 raised, 14 unchanged. Six of seven high school districts rose. one HS district and the non high school district unchanged. Figures give 1937 and 1936 totals for the three townships and note on continued comparison of rates across districts.
Opal Graharing and Marion Cross of Savanna united in a New Year morning ceremony at the Genoa Methodist parsonage. Officiant Rev Earl Edwards read the single ring rite. Attendants were Miss Jessie Graharing and Robert Daley. The bride, daughter of Mrs. Jessie Graharing, attended Savanna schools, graduating in 1932. The groom, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Cross of Kalkaska, Michigan, moved to Savanna five years ago and works as personnel clerk at the Savanna Ordnance Depot. The couple will reside with the bride's mother in Savanna.
Weather Observer James McCray reports the coldest December reading at Mt Carroll at two below with the date Dec 23. December saw 9 inches of snow and 1.41 inches of water-equivalent precipitation, plus frequent clouds and fog. The month ranged from 2 to 46 degrees with a 33 degree daily swing on Dec 31, totaling 1.41 inches of precipitation and 9 inches of snow.
Mt. Carroll high school basketball won the Savanna holiday tournament title with a 19-13 final over Savanna after dispatching Milledgeville and Lanark. Kuhleman led Mt. Carroll with seven points, Watson had six for Savanna, and Mt. Carroll excelled at the free throw line. Consolation game saw Milledgeville beat Lanark 36-22 with Liven aid 14 points and Glenn 11 for Milledgeville.
Carroll County Farm Bureau members will vote Friday to elect fourteen township directors for the coming year and seven directors for Carroll Service Company. Re-nominated include Edvin Simon, E C Guender, John Henze, Artman, Wickinger, Murray, Sarber, Livengood and Van Dorn. new nominees are Shafer, Hartman, Richter, Chafer and Hall. Principal speaker will be W. P. Sandford of Pontiac on The farmer Faces the Future.
Miss Bernice Hatfield of Savanna and Glen Rose of Mt. Carroll were married December 30 in Clinton Iowa court house with Judge John E. Purcell performing the single ring ceremony. Attendants were Miss Jive Devine and Howard Buck. The couple will reside in Mt. Carroll where the groom is employed.

Carroll reports two below zero was the coldest day in December. Nine inches of snow fell in that month, though total precipitation was only 1.41 inches. Pontiac editor to be principal speaker at annual Farm Bureau meeting in Mt. Carroll Friday. Fourteen directors of Farm Bureau and seven directors of Carroll Service company to be elected at business session.
Records from Sheriff Eber Shepherd show 82 cases handled in 1997 with larceny and observation as the most common. Larceny 18 cases and observation 14. other types include Investigation seven, burglary five, violation of peace bond five, driving while intoxicated five, and smaller counts for assault, vagrancy, forgery, and several hit IDs.
Webster Lumber Co. hired about 100 men by Wednesday to clear timber above Dam No. 13 with 300 to 500 more expected once fully underway. All workers must pass a physical exam and provide a social security number. No site chosen yet for a mill to be built near the Thomson railroad. log hauling waits on site decision.
Local Game Warden Tom Hand reports Carroll county will get a shipment of cottontail rabbits from the state department. The rabbits will be released through sportsmen club chapters in patches away from highways to reduce auto deaths.
Five farms in the county were sealed for a federal loan program. Only two of the five meet eligibility requirements for loan consideration. Local officials report the process follows federal guidelines and outlines next steps for the farmers.
Five farms in Carroll County had corn sealed by Parma and Farmers Eugene Murray by Tuesday this week. Only two of the sealed farmers sought federal loans. the rest turned to local banks. A sealed certificate may enable loans from any lender, with terms set by the lender.
Records from Circuit Clerk John Gelwicks show twenty divorce decrees granted in Carroll County in 1937, though nearly half the suits were dismissed or not brought to trial. Most decrees occurred in March and November, with women filing the majority of cases. several separate maintenance suits were also heard.
