A reader’s note recalls political ethics and the value of good leadership as a voting guide. The piece urges voters to reelect proven lawmakers and to remember the defense of homes, unity, and stability amid social and economic concerns.
Carroll County residents face a spring tax deadline with a total bill of 557,428.11 dollars. County Clerk Walwater’s office completed the extension and tax notices are being prepared in the county collector’s office for mailing. Personal property taxes and real estate installments are due by May 1, with the second real estate installment due by August 1. Major portions fund schools and district operations, while township and other entities receive remaining funds.
Illinois farms end 1934 with total livestock up 16 percent in value to 164 million while headcount drops to 7.2 million from 9.5 million the lowest in 25 years. Hogs fall 39 percent, cattle down 5 percent, sheep up 11 percent, milk cows steady. Horses and other classes also shrink though sheep shipments boost numbers.
Charles Wertz of near Danian pleaded guilty in a county court to a charge connected with the Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad. Wertz requested probation, a similar request was denied for another defendant. Robert Ic was charged with theft of ties and granted probation with $10 restitution and $25.80 costs to be paid in installments. Peters probation implies later sentencing to the state penitentiary on another charge.
Sixty four percent of contracts in force under the 1934 corn hog reduction program were signed by 11 Carroll county farmers at ten meetings last week. Farm adviser M D Roske says the strong turnout signals growing interest in the liberalized program with no idle-acre requirement for cooperators except a ten percent minimum on corn. Additional meetings are scheduled March 4 Shannon, March 5 Lanark, March 5 Forensen Savanna, March 3 Forensen Thomson, March 6 Mt Carroll and Milledgeville, March 7 Chadock.
Robert Peters of Lanark was sentenced by Judge Albert H. Manus in Freeport circuit court to 1 to 10 years in the state penitentiary for larceny. He pled guilty to stealing a number of cattle from the Frank Zier farm last June. The November grand jury indicted both Peters and Robert Lower of Lanark. Lower was acquitted in Mt. Carroll after a prior trial.
A tenant house on the Fred Volker farm three and one half miles south of Milledgeville was entirely destroyed by fire last Thursday morning. No one was there at the time. Mrs Glarence Howe and her husband were away. Furnishings and clothing were lost and the two story frame house razed. Origin of the fire is unknown.
Morrison hosts hopeful Morrison and Lanark enter from Carroll County with Savanna Chadwick Milledyu ie Thomson and Lanark listed among Morrison contenders. Local fans expect a competitive race as Shannon and Cat yell join Stockton meet entrants and emphasis rests on Morrison’s chances to claim the Elizabeth title alongside Pearl City and other county rivals.
Rov Earl Keim of Fair Haven and Adrinin Heinse meek are exploring power machinery for terracing this summer. The committee hopes to avoid farmer purchases by hiring a company with its own equipment, reducing supervision and collection efforts required if farmers bought machines.
Carrel county reports nearly all 1934 program funds have issued a second payment. About 1060 checks were received at Mt Carroll courthouse offices. most farmers have collected, leaving a small number outstanding.
A dated schedule lists games for the Morri son district tournament with times and matchups from Wednesday to Saturday. Entries include Erie versus Lanark, Chadwick versus Hilsdale, and Milledgeville versus Thomson, followed by successive rounds and a championship envisioned for Saturday.
Noej Hawkins, longtime Wysox assessor, died Tuesday at his Milledgeville home after a four year term as assessor. He served previously in local offices and was known as a township foe of the pigk se.

Native of Jo Daviess County, Tuhe Sughyvone Sughrour died Sunday at his son Charles Stockon home after 44 years in newspaper work. He edited the Stockton Journal and Mt Carroll Mirror, served as township official, and was born near Pleasant Valley. Funeral Tuesday at Cross Cemetery.

Milledgeville high school basketball mounted a late rally to tie Savanna 27-27 late, but Savanna pulled ahead with two field goals to win 27-23. Bushman led Milledgeville with points as Savanna built a 14-5 halftime edge and 21-15 lead.
