In Illinois the method of voting on constitutional amendments shapes passage chances. A general election may curb focus on reforms, while a special election raises cost but concentrates attention. Debate swirls around concurrency with November voting and court permissibility.
One hundred eighty Lions Club members competed at Carroll Bowling Lanes Mt. Carroll over two days. Lanark, the defending champion, again topped 36 teams with 2099 total pins, earning all event honors and hosting next year’s event. Don Schaulis and Nice tied for high handicap game at 267. Nice led high scratch game 244 and high scratch series 632. Walter of Hanover claimed high handicap series 701. Dixon placed second and Sterling third.
Milledgeville Lions Club and JayCees honored three men at a February 14 smorgasbord dinner in Emerald Hill Country Club. Omar Miller and Gene McMullen received plaques for aiding Paul Koster after a September accident. the Milledgeville Lions Club earned an award for member retention.
Shimer hosts Honors Night and welcomes a new Home Economics Extension Adviser. County residents attend a life saving session while a Lanark resident tours a food promotion show. A program on drugs is planned for March 31 and a plan trains students in safe tractor operation.
The Chadwick FFA Chapter hosted the Section 2 Public Speaking Contest on February 18 with 23 students from eight schools. Senior Prepared winners were Don Schneiderman Thomson Wayne Becker Mr Carroll and David Queckboerner Chadwick. Junior Creed winners were Joel Book Sterling and Jay Ohns Mt Carroll with Dave Bryson Milledgeville. Ex temporaneous winners were Roger Williams Milledgeville Brian Woessner Mt Carroll and Neil Beveroth Sterling. Judges included Mrs Nelson Magill Earl Gilliland and others from Chadwick, Mt Carroll Shanon Lanark Milledgeville and Sterling.
The Carroll County Cancer Society gathered at Savanna Presbyterian Church with Chairman Orpha Buckwalter presiding. Secretary J. Caron reported 869.50 raised in cancer memorials with Milledgeville leading contributions.
Lanark defeats Shannon 54 48 in eighth grade finals at Chadwick high school. Mount Carroll tops Shannon 26 18 in seventh grade semi finals and later beats Thomson 33 25 for the final seventh grade championship. Thomson defeats Chadwick 50 15 in another seventh grade semifinal.

Paul Koster of Milledgeville was named Conservation Farmer of the Year at the Carroll County Soil and Water Conservation District meeting in Mount Carroll. He farms 397 acres, with 157 owned, runs hogs cattle and sheep, and uses minimum tillage contour farming and grass waterways. He earned prior recognition for corn yields in 1967 and 1968 and serves as Milledgeville Lions Club president. he was injured in a 1969 farm accident.
The Carroll Service Company holds its regular annual meeting at Mount Carroll high school on Saturday February 28 at 10 45 a m. A free lunch will follow and Calvin D Johnson of Sperry Rand New Holland Division will speak. The Smith Family gospel quartet provides musical entertainment.
