The Thomson FFA held its annual Parent-Son banquet at the high school gym on Feb 22. Wayne G. Tidd and Lynn Bower received Honorary Chapter Farmers Degrees. Linda Diephuis named FFA Sweetheart. Awards covered beef, dairy, swine, crops, and farm topics with several members earning state and sectional honors.
Richard McGinty of Thomson reports the theft of about $1000 in items from Dar Land on Route 78 last Monday evening February 14. The loss includes roofing material plumbing tools power tools and copper fittings. McGinty asks anyone who recognizes the items to notify the sheriff's office.
Phyllis Burkema visited as a supper guest at the Grim home. Mabel Jobe from LaCrosse Wisconsin visited the Hoff family. Fred Hook attended the Open House for the 40th wedding anniversary of Isaac and a Decker couple at Wacker.
Riverview notes list Miss Jane Chambers guesting with Miss Debbie Reynolds over the weekend. Bud McWorthy and family visited Clinton Iowa to see her sister. Helen O Neal returned to Camanche after a week away. Malvin Brocious and John Maloney traveled to Lena Illinois. Ernie Sweeley, Jack Harvilla and families enjoyed trips to Chicago and a weekend at a summer cottage.
Earl Kness and family hosted visitors from Chadwick and Stockton for a Sunday dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Kness. Max Meakins celebrated a birthday with a dinner at his home joined by Joe Frosch Dorothe Lewis Mrs. Harry Bonders and Dale Eslinger. Gene Diephuis and Mark dined with Myles Haas family on Saturday. Gilbert Holland and Marcia were guests at Clarence Howe's Morrison home for Sunday evening supper.
Ray Eissens son of Mr and Mrs George Eissens and a senior at Thomson high school was named Section 2 Star Farmer at a Dixon meeting. He competed against boys from Carroll Lee Rock Island and Whiteside counties for a prize based on farming program scholarship and leadership. Eissens manages 5 beef steers 13 cattle 46 swine 15 acres oats 10 corn 18 hay and serves as president of the local FFA chapter. He advances to the district contest at Kewanee March 30 with the state event in Urbana April 23 as the goal. Other Section 2 awardees include Lippens Beau Prophetstown and Buikema Thomson among many' including Ray Bissens Thomson listed in farming categories.
Mrs Larry Smith and children and Miss Kathy Turner visited Monday with Mrs Michael Brearton in Marion Iowa. Calvin Eslinger and others spent last weekend in Chicago. Floyd Welch of Savanna visited Mr and Mrs Ben Stage Tuesday evening. Gail Turney a patient at the Veterans Hospital Iowa City spent the weekend with his wife and son then returned Sunday afternoon. John Stearns Cedar Rapids visited his brother in law Robert Plumley and family Sunday. Dinner honored Mr Smiths birthday with guests Robert Smith Marla Kathy Eslinger Ron Mike and Bonnie Atherton. Supper guests included Robert Smiths and Maude Brown Harriett. Sunday visitors at Ben Stages included Robert Stage Rock Island Steve Kemmer Sterling and Ken Kemmer Morrison.
Lucille McGinty wife of Vernon McGinty Kentucky state senator and GE tax accountant aids campaign while avoiding clubs and committees. She emphasizes warmth and home life across Kingston neighborhood near Rutherford School. Her son Gary, a Purdue sophomore, and Perky the toy paddle illustrate a calm domestic image.
Thomson PTA Health Committee announces the annual immunization drive starting next Tuesday with diphtheria tetanus and whooping cough shots. There are two series shots for DPT, three total for the full program through fifth grade, plus booster recommendations every 3 to 4 years. Smallpox vaccination also offered with reading on March 8. parental permission slips sent home. preschool children may participate. For questions call Mrs. R. C. Bush at 259 3446.
The week lists daily meals including Beef and Gravy with sides on Monday, Chili on Tuesday, Chicken and Noodles on Wednesday, Ham Salad Sandwiches on Thursday, and Fish Sticks on Friday. Each day accompanies bread, butter, fruit or milk and a vegetable option.
Mrs. Maude Brown and Harriett returned home Sunday after weeks with sons and brothers in Roswell New Mexico. They visited Orvie Nix and family in Denver Vince Curley and family Gertie Lang in Los Animos Longmont Curley Morrison with Norman Balkinbush and Mamie Curley. Carl Petersen and Claude Wiebenga visited Dora Wiebenga in Argo Fay and with granddaughter Lori Van Zuiden in Fulton.
Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Tobey of Princeton formerly lived near Thomson and marked their 55th wedding anniversary with an open house in Tucson Arizona hosted by their son Floyd Tobey and family. They farmed 35 years east of Thomson before moving. A centerpiece of three heart shaped cakes celebrated the occasion.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Imel of Chadwick visited the Bielema family Friday evening. Thomas Kustes John and Katherine Cooper traveled to Davenport to view the flood and ice jam Sunday. George Bissens Ray and Karen the Oregon teacher visited the Eisens at Rockford and attended a Rockford College basketball game. Atherton family hosted Morrison relatives Monday night. Roger England and two children visited Rockford Saturday. Kara Lou Grim stayed with Pam Kaufman Friday and Saturday in Ideal. Bruce Groharing and Jean visited Bertha Mayhall at Galesburg Sunday. Sloan family hosted visitors including Danny Kindle, Don Kendell and their children in Sterling Sunday.
John Dimmick, son of Mr and Mrs Delbert Dimmick of Thomson, and Norman French of Thomson, along with John and Robert Demaree of Mesa Arizona, have earned PhDs. Dimmick's career included Urbana High School, Wake Forest College and postdoctoral work in physiology, culminating in a biology professorship at Wake Forest. He is married to Kathryn Scott and resides in Winston Salem with two daughters Judy and Jeannie.
Mrs. Melvin Brocious of Riverview called recently to visit Mrs. Ellan Brand. Bill Moore called Wednesday to visit his mother Mrs. Mary Moore. Allan Zugschwerdt of Chadwick called Tuesday to visit friends. Mr. Falls of Clinton Indiana spent a few days at the home last week.
Mrs. Marion Olson and Mrs. Harold Christiansen of Mt. Carroll were hospitalized in Savannah after a Wednesday afternoon accident on the Chadwick blacktop. The car left the road and plunged into a ditch, possibly due to steering failure. Olson had leg injuries and bruises and remained under care.
The sick Mrs Maurice Strukhoff was transported by village ambulance to Mercy hospital Monday evening where she remains a medical patient. Harmon Paisley, 17 months old, was a medical patient in Savanna hospital then transferred by ambulance to University Hospital at Iowa City. his condition remains critical. Mrs Jennie Griswolds and Albert Lynch remain medical patients in Janean hospital Clinton.
York Community Church and nearby churches publish service times and leaders. York Community Church lists pastor S Cleworth and staff with 9:30 am Sunday School and 10:50 am worship and Lenten study on Romans. York Baptist led by Emer W Grafft with 10 am worship. Methodist Thomson Argo Fay Hickory Grove schedules and Lenten services. Spring Valley Reformed Church hours shown. Catholic Immaculate Conception Fulton and St John Savanna masses and confessions schedule.
Bible classes for all ages at 10:00 am followed by Morning worship at 11:00 am. Evening services include a 7:00 pm song service and worship. In winter, Bible study and prayer meet at 1125 10th Ave Fulton at 7:30 pm on Tuesdays.
Susan Risley of Rock Island spent the weekend as a guest at the Argo Fay home of Cynthia Durward and her parents Mr and Mrs Les Durward. Both Risley and Durward are student nurses at Moline Public Hospital.
Wayne P. Ashby 66 of Thomson died at 10 AM Wednesday in the Veterans Hospital Iowa City after a lengthy illness. Funeral arrangements include a 2 PM service at Thomson Methodist Church with a 1:45 family prayer in church parlors. He is survived by his wife Florence and three sons, a daughter, ten grandchildren, his mother Ada Ashby and four brothers, with final services at Fay Funeral Home in Ful lton and burial in Thomson.
The district tournament starts tonight at Shannon with Chadwick vs Shannon at 7 p.m. and Thomson Trojans against Lyndon Wildcats at 8:30 p.m. The Trojans own an 18 5 record and have won the Holiday and Carroll Count tournaments this year. Chadwick stands 12 10 after beating the Trojans twice in four meetings. Shannon sits at 3 19 and Lyndon at 4 13. If both survive, Thomson hopes for a 3 2 mark against Chadwick. The championship is set for Friday at 8 p.m.
Mr and Mrs Robert Plum ley and family visited Monday evening with her uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs Willard Nelson at Hillsdale and with their houseguest Mr and Mrs Ronald Pamer of Pembrook New Hampshire.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks for kind expressions of sympathy during the bereavement of Mrs. Lena Swett. Special thanks to Dr. Reddies the Thomson fire department oxygen squad Rev Kendall and all who assisted in any way Your thoughtfulness will never be forgotten.
