Babson Park Florida February 11 1944. The column argues bond markets will stay strong in high and top grades while medium grade issues lead the year. Municipalities face reduced volume and higher prices due to war demands and tax shifts. Railroads industrials and utilities reviewed with cautious buying guidance and risk notes.
Mt Carroll leads with eight wins and one loss as the six Carroll County Conference teams meet Friday. Shannon and Lanark chase second place at 6 wins 3 losses while Carroll broke a long win streak with a Milledgeville upset. Friday games feature Chadwick at Mt Carroll Thomson at Lanark and Milledgeville at Shannon.
Savanna high school defeated Maquoketa 45 to 24 Friday to clinch the Illowa league crown. Engaldo led Savanna with 16 points, Cravatta 15, Tucibat 11, Hayes scored 12 for Maquoketa. Score by quarter shows Savanna pulling away after a 27 9 halftime edge.
The Jo Da viss Carroll County Holstein Breeders association will hold an annual meeting Friday February 18 1944 at 1 o clock a barn meeting at the Sam and John Buford farm one half mile east of Woodbine just north of U S 20 E M Clark National Fieldman will supervise discussions Illinois Holstein Friesen president Leslie H Geddes will be guest speaker The event invites all Holstein enthusiasts to attend and bring a new gator for the herd management agenda.
Wallace Williams a Mt. Carroll farmer and soil conservation district director reports contour farming has raised yields by ten bushels per acre. County farm records show similar gains in corn and oats with contour planting, contour seeding, and strip cropping. AAA offers payments of 1.50 per acre for contour planting, 0.50 for contour seeding oats, and 2.50 for starting strip cropping, with no earnings cap. Last year over 8,000 acres of corn were contour planted in Carroll County.
Lanark high edged Milledgeville 25 to 24 in a see-saw Carroll county conference basketball battle at Milledgeville Friday night. Miles led Milledgeville with 14 points in the heavyweight game while Brantner scored 11 for Lanark. Preliminaries saw Lanark lightweights win 32 to 14 and visiting grade cagers take 21 to 20.
State Auditor Arthur C. Lueder reports January pension payments totaled 4 165 925 in Illinois a drop of over 39 000 from December. Carroll county received 9 772 for 55 recipients Whiteside county 25 256 for 880 recipients. ADC payments in January reached 751 876 aiding 53 845 children. Carroll county paid 797 to 60 dependents Whiteside 2 623 to 193 dependents.
A January blitz dropped six to eight inches of snow with strong east winds, blocking a highway near DeKalb briefly. State, county, and township crews fought the storm to keep through routes open. Three minor accidents occurred with no serious injuries as snow fell again Friday morning hampering some travel.
The Office of Price Administration announces March 6 ceiling prices for restaurants in the Quad-Cities District, limiting meals to the April 4–10, 1948 base period. Taverns face same limit on alcoholic beverages. Illinois counties listed include Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Rock Island, and others. Iowa counties include Clinton, Des Moines, Iowa, Lee, Scott, and more. A digest outlining compliance will be distributed to the trade.
District and regional basketball pairings were announced with opening games set for Feb 22 and Feb 29. Shannon district features Shannon vs Elizabeth and Chadwick vs Thomson. Mt Carroll regional includes Savanna vs Hanover and Morrison vs East Dubuque. Dixon regional matches Dixon vs Sterling Community and Rock Falls vs Milledgeville, with further openers in East Moline and nearby districts.
Tousley Brothers of Thomson top the Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement Association in January with 21 grade Holstein and Guernsey cows averaging 45.3 pounds butterfat and 1150 pounds milk. Holland and Pratt second with 43.9 fat and 978 milk. Carroll and French third with 40.5 fat and 957 milk. John K. Morris fourth with 38.9 fat and 861 milk. John Derver fifth with 36.4 fat and 1033 milk. Overall 432 cows tested, 64 dry. 13 unprofitable sold. High producers include No. 99 with 87.7 fat and 2040 milk. Marie and No. 12 and No. 9 also notable yields.
Shannon dropped a 34 to 26 decision to Forreston in a Friday night game. Shirk led Shannon with 12 points while Hiteman scored 11 for Forreston, as Forreston won 19 to 18 in a close lightweights matchup.
Co E Dingman of Milledgeville and G E Bristle of Morrison win re election to the board at the Mt Carroll Mutual Fire Insurance annual meeting held in Mt Carroll. N D French of Thomson elected to succeed the late James J Sheridan. R E Boyd of Mt Carroll re elected president and William Heinze of Thomson re elected vice president. D C Weidman of Mt Carroll and Paul Knox of Milledgeville re appointed surveyors. Weidman covers west half of county and Knox the east.
First Lt. Kermit Hartman 21 of Mt. Carroll bagged his first Zero during a bombing raid over Rabaul as part of the Sun Setter squadron. Capt. Restifo and Lt. Harry Landers also downed Zeros, boosting the unit total to 133 fighters. Hartman received an oak leaf cluster January 13 for his fighter pilot service from July 1943 to Oct 1943.
Acting on orders from the post master general, city and town carriers now ring the bell or knock on doors when delivering government mail. They do not wait for a response after placing letters in the receptacle, a measure due to rising checks and war savings bonds. Lanark Mt Carroll and Savanna are the only Carroll county communities with city delivery.
Cpl Donald Hayenga 22 son of Mr and Mrs Everett Hayen Shannon left California after training and reported to a marine air unit on Guadalcanal. He entered the service April 29 1942 and overseas July 1942. After a US return he spent 30 days with his parents and is Shannon high school class of 1939.
Savanna high school edged Mt. Carroll 39 to 37 on the Carroll floor after a 42-34 preliminary win by Carroll reserves. Emmett led Carroll with 11 points while Tudibat topped Savanna with 9 as Savanna rallied in the third, then held on in the fourth.
Funeral services for Edna Mae Cashman Hicks 35 of Savanna were held at Fuller funeral home in Savanna with Rev J Allen Blair officiating. Burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery in Warren. She died Feb 8 at Savanna city hospital after a decade of ill health. She was born July 17, 1908 in Warren, daughter of Jon and Lena Cashman. She married Robert Hicks July 3, 1929 in Galena and moved to Savanna in 1935. Surviving are husband, son Robert Jr, daughter Caralee, mother, and brother Pfe Homer Cashman of Camp Bowie Texas.
Mrs. Arthur E. Ferguson 64 of Savanna died Feb 9 after a brief illness at home. Funeral service was held Feb 11 in Fuller funeral home with burial in Savanna cemetery. Surviving are husband four sons a daughter and two brothers. Reuben Peters 77 of Lanark died Feb 12 in St Francis hospital Freeport after two weeks illness. Funeral was Feb 12 in Frank funeral home Lanark with burial in Lanark cemetery. Surviving are two daughters two grandchildren one great granddaughter and a brother.
Mrs A J Foster aged 84 died at 9 p m Monday February 14 at her Mt Carroll home. Born December 28 1859 she had lived in Mt Carroll for 40 years. She leaves her husband a retired Milwaukee railroad station agent a daughter Ruth Foster of Rockford two sons Frank Foster of Mt Carroll Vernon Foster of Dallas Texas a brother Albert Zimmerman of Orangeville and a sister Mrs Della Hunt of Freeport.
Tina O Weber Smith 68 died of a heart attack Monday after illness in Savanna Chestnut Park home. Funeral 1 pm Thursday Fuller funeral home Savanna Rev Howard M Kildow. Burial Sterling Iowa cemetery. Born March 22 1875 Jo Daviess county. Survived by husband.
Milledgeville cagers defeated Polo High 38 to 21 Tuesday night on the Polo floor. Polo reserves won a preliminary 24 to 16. Cid Libberton of Argo is employed at the Harold Witt farm.
Daisy Rupp sues A O Elliott Jewelry Co in Mt Carroll circuit court claiming a diamond valued at 600 dollars was appraised but a lesser stone was returned. Witness R Haeflinger testified the evidence stone fit the setting and substitution seems unlikely. Jurors Matt Strautz Meyers Barthel Wagner McGinty Shafer Carbaugh Farthing Johnson Pauley Slick Thompson sworn in for the hearing.
