1936 Tax Extension Is Started

Deaths of Soba M Reimwalt and Porter Whitmer
Mt Carroll resident Soba M Reimwalt aged 50 was found dead at home after heart trouble. He helped organize Carroll County State Bank and served as Mt Carroll electric light board director and Frances Shimer junior college trustee. Relatives include sister-in-law Hattie Wells. Wife Nellie Shirk died in 1934. Porter Whitmer, 68, died in St Francis hospital Freeport after nearly a year of illness. He was born October 11, 1868 in a farm family and married Miss Van Frey in 1893.

Miss Esther Roberts and Walter Haring Wed at Christmas Day
Miss Esther Rt. Roberts and Walter Haring united in marriage in a quiet noon ceremony at the bride’s parents home east of Savanna. Rev. Br. Leitner of Mt. Carroll’s First Baptist Church spoke. Attendants were Miss Lillian Sehneck and Richard Forney. A four course dinner followed for immediate relatives. The couple will live with the bride’s parents for now.

Army Sergeant to Retire Today After Thirty Year Service
First Sergeant Charles A. Schaffer of the 52nd Ordnance company at Savanna Ordnance depot will retire from the U S Army today December 31 after 30 years of service. A company review will be held at Florteek this morning followed by a company holiday. Schaffer has been at Savanna eight years and will move to Baltimore Maryland with his wife after retirement.

Beer Truck Wreck Shuts Highway North of Savanna
A semi trailer loaded with beer left the highway north of Savanna early Tuesday morning in heavy fog. The trailer rolled over an embankment, scattering nearly 50 kegs and 250 cases of bottled beer along the road, then caught fire. The driver extinguished the blaze and the truck was towed to Hanover garage for repairs.

First Railroad Retirement Pension Issued in County
Richard D. Smith, 73, of Savanna, received the first pension check under the Railroad Retirement Act in the county. Many other railroad workers are eligible but await a court ruling on the act’s constitutionality, expected after January first. The act, passed in late 1935, provides annuities for those with 30 years of service or aged 65, with a 48 million dollar fund. Smith served about 48 years, mostly as a car inspector for the Milwaukee Road.

Milledgeville Woman Missing From Son's Home
Milledgeville resident Elisabeth Fierheller, 73, disappeared Saturday night from her son Dan’s home in Freeport. A neighbor saw an elderly woman walking east early Sunday. search teams found no trace. Her body was later recovered Tuesday in the Pecatonica River near Freeport. Funeral services set in Milledgeville for Thursday afternoon.
