Babson predicts 1955 will bring modest gains across several sectors with leadership from steel and automobiles while construction rises publically. He notes competition remains stiff, profits erode, and selectivity increases as inventories and prices stay near 1954 levels.
The 1955 state primary highway program released from Gov. Stratton lists no new Carroll County construction for the year. It includes future right of way needs for Highway 64 from Savanna to Mt. Carroll, special projects at Lanark Crossing, and Route 78 and 88 abutment removals with pavement work totaling about 30 thousand to 30 thousand dollars.
Mt Carroll Lanark Chadwick and Scales Mound won opening round games in the Mt Carroll Holiday Invitational. Lanark beat Hanover 53 50 after leading 15 6 in the first quarter, Mt Carroll defeated Stockton 70 43, Chadwick beat Pearl City 52 42, and Scales Mound downed Orangeville 70 61 after a slow start. Wednesday matchups feature Lanark vs Mt Carroll and Chadwick vs Scales Mound.

Charles B. Shuman of Sullivan Illinois was unanimously chosen to lead the American Farm Bureau Federation at its 36th annual meeting in the Hotel New Yorker. He succeeds Allan B. Kline who resigns due to ill health, bringing nine years as Illinois Agricultural Association president to the national post. The federation represents more than 1.6 million farm families in 48 states and Puerto Rico.
The Clinton Parent Teacher Association and the State University of Iowa Child Welfare research station co sponsor a five week Family Life Workshop series beginning January 18 at 7 30 p m in Horace Mann School. In the holiday tournament, the Trojans defeated Warren 75 to 55 in the first round as Forreston earned a quarterfinal with a 76 to 69 win over Shannon. Lena trimmed Galena 63 to 45, and Elizabeth beat Milledgeville 58 to 49.
After a beautiful Christmas day the area saw rain Sunday and Monday with light freezing rain at night. A light snowfall moved in Tuesday evening and slick highways slowed traffic. By Wednesday thaw began as ice cleared then snow briefly returned before noon. Temperatures dipped below 15 early Tuesday night and rose by morning.
Charles T Carroll of Hazelhurst died at 8 a m Tuesday after illness. Born April 14 1880 in Avon Wisconsin he was the son of Thomas and Honora Murphy Carroll. He married Agnes Walsh November 27 1912 in Durand and farmed in Durand Beloit areas before moving to Polo in 1949 then Lanark in 195? Surviving are his widow four sons four daughters two sisters and four brothers and numerous grandchildren. Services to be held at 9:30 a m Thursday at the Carroll home and 10 a m at St Mary Church Polo.
Delegates and alternates representing area teachers attend the 101st Illinois Education Association meeting in Chicago at the Hotel Sherman. The program covers school finance teaching standards teacher shortages and informing the public about schools. Mrs Loyd Wolf 66 of Lanark died at Savanna hospital Friday. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p m Monday at the Frank funeral home Lanark with the Rev Irvin Bruhn officiating and burial in Lanark cemetery. Survivors include her husband two daughters Mrs Lyle Jones of Savanna and Mrs Carl Merchant of Cedar Ridge California and sister Mrs Mae Jenkins of Monte bello California.

Funeral services for Annie Etta Schoen 81 were held in Lanark with the Rev Merle Hawbecker officiating and burial in Lanark cemetery. She was born in 1873 at Polo and died Sunday in Freeport. surviving are a son Harry and two daughters Ethel Miller and Christina Weber, plus relatives.
Hanover aged 26 SOD inspector John R Stevens died in a single car crash three miles south of Hanover on Illinois Route 80. He was alone, en route to Savanna, and was survived by his Virginia parents Mr and Mrs Raymond Stevens of Chester West Virginia. Burial is planned at Mill Creek cemetery Hoopstown Pa.
Miss Lottie Ann Garwick 60 percent native of Milledgeville died Tuesday morning at North Rockford hospital. Funeral services set for 2 p m Thursday at the Milledgeville Methodist church with Rev. H H Rowsey officiating and burial in Bethel cemetery. Survived by sister Mrs Elizabeth Overhoser of Milledgeville and several nieces and nephews.
Residents purchased 122802 in Series E and H United States Savings Bonds in November 1954. The figures come from the Treasury Department and were reported to F. E. Weidman of Mt. Carroll, county Savings Bonds Chairman.
Surviving relatives include the parents and four half sisters Joan Kay Diana Zubaty and Marcia Lister all at home.
January schedule for Home Bureau features major lessons on Helping Children Grow in Responsibility and Short Cuts in Food Preparation. Activities include unit meetings with Mrs. Roche Mrs. Zemke Mrs. Bruch and others plus special lessons on preventing poisoning cake mix study and a beginning clothing construction class.
At 12 30 p m Saturday three Rockford residents were hurt when their car left Illinois Route 80 and toppled 15 to 20 feet down an embankment about four miles north of Savanna. Driver Raymond Donovan escaped harm. passengers Gerald Tomlinson and sons William 15 and Dwight 11 suffered injuries and were kept overnight at Savanna hospital.
Lindsey Lindsey of Mt. Carroll and Fred Holland of Elizabeth were married at 1 30 PM December 19 in First Lutheran Church with Rev E A Kreppert officiating. Attendants were Donna Mullane and Marine Sgt Carl Ladsey. A reception followed at the bride’s home and the couple will reside in Maquoketa Iowa.
