ICC Grants Increase in Milledgeville Mutual Telephone Rates
The Illinois Commerce Commission approved higher telephone rates for Milledgeville Mutual Telephone Co serving Milledgeville and Chadwick. The new schedule takes effect January 1 1945 with bills due January 20 reflecting increased monthly rentals by about 60 cents to 1 dollar per installation type. Injured Chadwick lumberman Charles Woy hospitalized
Charles Woy, partner in Senneff and Woy lumber and coal at Chadwick, was brought to Freeport hospital after an accident at the yard Friday afternoon. He suffered a skull fracture, a broken finger, a cut above the right eye, and other bruises. Woy was unable to recall how the injury occurred, though a keg of nails near the truck area is believed to have fallen on him after Emil Hartman prepared to depart.

Saturday December 24 marked the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs George Haag longtime Fairy Maven residents. The couple wed December 25 1884 in the Swartz home Salem Lutheran church. They lived on a Chadwick farm later moving to their present home in 1918. They have one daughter Lydia and three sons Carl John and Robert with seven grandsons. Capt Robert Haag is stationed at Camp Swift Texas and 1st Lt Donald Haag is serving in the South Pacific.

OPA Changes Sugar and Meat Ration Rules
In a Christmas week move the OPA declared all sugar stamps except No 34, and red and blue stamps valid before Dec 1, invalid after 12:01 a.m. Dec 26. By Tuesday ration points will cover canned vegetables and tomatoes. Dec 31 brings back about 85 percent of meats. Butter rises to 24 points. Red stamps valid are Q, R5 and S65 and blue stamps X5, Y5, 25, A2, B2. Mrs Glen Sears of Clinton visited sister Mrs Carl Johansen Monday.

Cold wave chills region after Christmas
Residents faced a sharp cold snap after a white Christmas with temperatures plunging to 21 below zero early Tuesday. By midnight the thermometer rose to ten above and by morning to 14 above as snow began, with nearly an inch on the ground. Snowplows cleared state highways though driving remained hazardous on snowpacked roads.
