Black Oak Grange hosts a Christmas party Friday evening December 22 in the Grange hall with a gift exchange. The regular grange meeting is postponed due to the installation of officers for Carroll and Whiteside counties in Sterling on Thursday evening December 28.
Mrs George Lanning and her children spent Tuesday in Savanna while Mrs N B Lewis of River Forest visited from Thursday night to Tuesday night with her mother Mrs Mary Jane McGinty and sister Mrs Dora Doty.
J W Erdmier of Shannon was elected chairman of the Carroll county AAA committee on December 16. He succeeds Herman Daehler who is stepping down after three years. Ed L. Dauphin of Savanna was named vice chairman and Eugene P. Murray of Thomson joined as the third member. Alternate members include Dackler and Freeman H. Law. Community committeemen from districts were also named with several new and returning members across Cherry Grove Shannon Fair Haven Mt Carroll Salem York Elkhorn Grove Wy-son Freedom Rock Creek Lima Savanna Washington Woodland.
A Christmas program will be presented at 8 oclock Friday evening December 22 at the Fair Haven Evangelical church. The event features a Little Town of Bethlehem song scripture and prayer a Star of Bethlehem recitation The Lost Christmas Recipe pageant with The Story Lady Katharine Slager The Old Woman who lived in a shoe Liota Janssen Alice Barbara Slager Billy Vernon Adolph Jr a group of children and a Christmas Tree. The program ends with a piano solo Silent Night and benediction after offering announcements.
Thomson reports Mor rison residents visiting neighbors and lists Christmas guest plans. A bank stockholders meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening Jan 9. Several families from Ideal Lanark Farmer City Savanna Fulton Mt Carroll and other nearby towns will join the Diehl family for Christmas.
William Ritenour 82 of Savanna died in Rockford hospital after a two week stay. Funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at Law's Funeral Home Savanna with burial in Savanna Cemetery. Survived by two daughters, an adopted son, five brothers, five sisters. Henry Wolber 78 of Milledgeville died at Home Hospital Sterling after months illness. Survived by husband, two sons, one daughter, three grandchildren and a great grandchild. Funeral services Saturday 1:30 p.m. Ezra Sollenberger home and 2 p.m. Trinity Lutheran Church burial West Jordan Cemetery. Mrs. James Eley 78 of Mt. Carroll died Dec 14 at son in law and daughter’s home Mt. Carroll. Funeral Sunday at Christian Funeral Home Mt. Carroll burial Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by husband two daughters, two sons and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Jacob Moore aged 77 died Sunday in her Mt Carroll home. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Frank Funeral Home officiated by Rev R H Leitner and burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. Born December 26 1866 in Carroll County she was daughter of Peter and Cordelia Schroeder. She married Jacob Moore on December 24 1881 and leaves sons Ray of Savanna Fred of Beckford and daughters Mrs J M Starr of Mt Carroll and Mrs John Altentern of Savanna.
Sgt. Francis E. Boyd 31 of Carroll died November 28 in France from wounds received the day before. Overseas since January, he earned battle stars for Anzio Rome and the invasion of southern France. Born October 11 1913 in Mt Carroll he was married October 25 1938 to Thelma Hartman. He entered service August 1943. Surviving are his widow, his parents a sister and three brothers.
Mr and Mrs Carl Peterson were Sunday guests of Mrs Reka Haas at Clinton Mrs Anna Jenkins received an Xmas card from Ensign and Mrs Vernon Corbin of New Orleans La They have been located there since June though Mr Corbin has made several boat trips and expects to be sent out again soon He was former coach of Y C H 8
Residents faced temperatures down to 12 degrees below zero on Monday with highs near 15 above. Snow measured about half an inch Monday night but wind remained light. Roads were cleared on main routes and most secondary streets by week’s end, though a Friday night snow flurry briefly threatened drifting on north south roads.
Judge Leon A. Zick presided at a Mt Carroll circuit court session and announced a continuation for another session on Wednesday, Dec. 27. In Savanna a tax sale saw several tracts sold, with the sale extended to Saturday, Dec. 25 to finish disposals. Orrie Leavens of Thomson presented 19 fox pelts to the county clerk and collected a bounty of $2.50 per pelt.
The county clerk reports licenses granted to John F. Calloway of Savanna and Dorothy A. Platt of Hanover. Also listed are William F. Earr of Savanna with Inez E. Stabler of Decatur. Other couples include Lowell Welch with Doris Burkholder of Lanark, Gus Sherman with Ervilee Bowden of Savanna, and John W. Withhart with Ruth I. Plattenberger, both of Savanna.
The room reports illness and absences in Ronalda and Delaus, with hope for Friday’s Christmas party. Henry Bielema donated a Christmas tree and students drew medieval knights. Packages arrive, bright tree brightens room. holidays start Friday and resume Tuesday January 2.

Harlan Rogers on furlough visited Cornelius Noordhoff in Bangor Maine. Missing in action news notes Mrs. William Wells of Chicago learning her husband, in the air corps, has been missing in Germany since November 21.
Miss Jeanne Kent and Robert S. Hansen wed in LaGrange Presbyterian Church with double ring ceremony attended by family. Ruth Plattenberger and John Withhart also married in Savanna in a home ceremony, as Ervilee Bowden and Gus Scherman wed in Savanna church parsonage and plan to reside there.
Miss Doris Ruth Burkholder daughter of Mr and Mrs Ernest Burkholder Lanark Ill and Low ell H Welch youngest son of Mrs Elizabeth Welch Mt Carroll were married Saturday afternoon Dec 16 at 4 pm in the Church of the Brethren parsonage Rev H T Richards reading the double ring ceremony The couple later dined at Glenview hotel Mt Carroll and left on the Hi Awatha for a wedding trip to Chicago The bride a Lanark high school graduate 1988 has worked in Lanark The groom attended Mt Carroll schools and for six years has worked on the Robert Livengood farm both receive warm wishes from their community

Frank Rush heads to California for winter with his daughter Reeves Kratz, while multiple couples host and visit across Morrison Chadwick and Lanark communities.
The U S house sent to the White House a bill to create a Clinton bridge commission with authority to acquire and operate bridges across the Mississippi River. The senate approved the measure and the commission would issue bonds to finance the project, likely toll free after debt is cleared.
J. W. Erdmi er chair of the county AAA committee urges farmers to file dairy feed applications and evidence for September October 1944 production and sales before December 30 1944 to ensure timely payments. He warns late filings create extra work for both applicants and the county office.
Mt Carroll high school dropped two basketball games over the weekend. Amboy defeated Carroll 27 24 in a tight Friday clash, while Morrison routed Carroll 57 34 on Saturday. Carroll reserves lost 16 12 and 42 26 in earlier prelims.
Mrs. Mable Crandall of New Orleans visits in the Severance home. Sunday dinners hosted by Frank Warfield feature Joe Warfield and Stella Coffman of Clinton. Ralph Hook family moves from McCullough farm near Argo to Daggetts area. Bernie Boelkens to move to McCullough farm. Joe Foltz of Burlington stayed with Eva Foltz. Chadwick guests include Leroy Foltz and Gary. Scot Roberts visits Yorks in Doverla and George Schwartz family. Fred Hook family dines with Elmer How. Genevieve Pauline and Russell Carpenter visit Davenport. Max Smith, working in Chadwick, joins Johnson family for weekend. Leonard Porter of Clinton visits daughter Wilbur Stiles’ home. Freeman Clevidence returns to Madison after week with Lou Moyer.
Mrs Clara Swett mails the Review as a Christmas gift to her daughter Mrs Gladys Little of Little River Station Miami Fla. Mrs Wm Reader ships the Review to her son Wilbur K Reader in Missouri. Mr and Mrs Lester Grimm receive the Review as a gift from Claude and Mrs Grim. Mrs Bertha Holland renews the Review for W J Laycock of Davenport Iowa.
Chadwick varsity beat Thomson 47 to 27 after reserves opened 24-15 win. Don Cobb scored 18 on 9 baskets, Don Weber added 12, York struggled under the basket with long passes. Rema rs led Chadwick with 16 points, Ashby tallied 10 for York.
Mrs Porter at the high school requests wool scraps for a junior Red Cross knitting project. Home Ee girls lead the drive and will use donations for charity efforts.
