S O D Guards Find Boys in Empty Box Car
Clarence 15 and Arnold 13 Smith of Burlington were found by civilian guards inside an empty box car at the Savanna Ordnance depot during a routine inspection. The boys had been playing in the car near their home, became trapped when the door closed during a train move, and were rescued after about 17 hours. They were taken to Galena then Davenport after authorities notified their family.

Deaths in Carroll County Bert Bundy and Ollie Webb
Theodore Bundy 71 died after a lingering illness at his Mt. Carroll home. Funeral services were held at Mt. Carroll Lutheran Church with burial in Oak Hill cemetery. Surviving are his wife two sons a daughter three sisters and three brothers. Ollie Webb 56 a Milwaukee railroad employee died of a heart attack at his Savanna home after arriving in Savannah in 1918. He is survived by three brothers and other relatives.

Navy relaxes physicals standards for enlistment

Workman sale totals over $11 300 at auction
Lloyd Workman's closing out sale Monday drew bidders from Iowa Wisconsin and north western Illinois. Auctioneer Ed Mest said the total neared $11 300 with Holstein cattle selling up to 210 for a registered bull and cows and calves fetching 175 and 35 respectively. Corn sold at 75 cents a bushel and oats at 51 4 cents.
