County Judge Reports On How The Judicial Amendment Will Affect Court Procedure

Judge Edward J. Turnbaugh of Savanna returned from the Illinois County and Probate Judges Association meeting in Chicago. The Blue Ballot Judicial Amendment, approved by 260000 votes, will take effect January 1 1964 and requires sweeping changes including consolidation of courts, new judge retention ballots, state funding, and reassignment of duties to magistrates and circuit judges.

County Opposes Diversion of Motor Fuel Tax Funds

Car roll county supervisors voiced opposition to any plan diverting motor fuel tax funds at the December meeting. They adopted a resolution warning such transfers would harm Illinois highways and urged legislature to require surplus funds be deposited back to the allocating counties. The board also planned insurance appraisals, approved a $900 yearly raise for Highway Superintendent W. R. Geisz, and reviewed multiple state aid and county reports.

Airman Shaw reassigned to Amarillo AFB for training

Airman Basic Gary A. Shaw grandson of Mr and Mrs H Bender of Savanna Illinois is reassigned to Amarillo AFB Texas for technical training as a United States Air Force supply specialist. He completed the first training phase here and was selected for the course based on his interests and aptitudes. Shaw is a 1962 Savanna Community High School graduate.

Study Mount Carroll airstrip plan underway

A Mt. Carroll committee studies the possibility of an airstrip for the area. Chairman Don Mackay and members Mayor Carlyle Richter Don Richter and Ted Robbe will report soon. Former resident R. E. Ritenour urged a small 200 by 2500 foot strip with land lease and basic facilities to attract industry and tourism.

Shannon wins first basketball game of season

Shannon high school Eagles beat Dakota 52-44 in Stephenson Conference play for their season opening win. Shannon also won the preliminary 40-37.

High School Cage Tourney Sites Listed

Illinois High School Association released the district regional and sectional sites for boys basketball. Carroll county schools Thomson Chadwick and Shannon are not hosting this year and may be assigned to Lyndon Elizabeth or Forreston. Regional winners advance to sectionals at Morrison Rock Island Sherard Kewanee Weatherfield and DeKalb hosts page. State finals set for Champaign March 22 23.

Pomona Grange Reports At Milledgeville Meeting

The Pomona Grange met Monday evening December 10 in Milledgeville Grange hall with thirty five members and three visitors. Paul Voeckel was instated as assistant steward. Reports were given by Agricultural and Safety committees and from Milledgeville Black Oak and Rock Creek subordinate granges. Officers conference held December 12 at Milledgeville. A pageant What Do the Carols Say was presented and the next meeting set for January 14 in Black Oak Grange Hall.

Illinois veterans aid offers education grants for eligible children

Edward B. Akin of the Illinois Veterans Commission warns families to file for the Veterans Children Educational Opportunities Act benefits before June 30 1963. The program provides 150 dollars per school year for children of eligible deceased veterans aged ten to eighteen. Contact nearest commission office or Mt Carroll courthouse service officer Tuesday 9:30 to 3:30 for help.

New Members Added to Carroll County Fair Board

Carroll County Fair board accepted two new members John K. Morris Chadwick state representative and Charles Bickelhaupt Mt Carroll to lead breeding cattle with Morris as superintendent and Bickelhaupt as publicity director. Plans for the 1963 fair include Aug 5 to Aug 10 with a week of events and entertainment, plus concerns over costs.

Buildings Razed by Flames at Switch Factory

Fire at S and S Frame Co. north of Mt Carroll destroyed two buildings and contents causing about 75000 in damage. Firefighters fought the blaze from about 4 p m until after 8 p m. The woodworking shop owned by John Swiech and son employed 14 men. The fire started in the paint spraying area, possibly sparked by an exhaust fan. No injuries reported and Swiech home alongside survived with some salvage. Insurance partial coverage noted.
