7,000 Acres Cut From Carroll County Corn Allotment

Carroll County officials announced 1940 corn acreage allotments drop sharply by about 7,060 acres to 60,984 for corn and total soil-depleting acreage down to 98,516 from 106,298. The state average yields and higher conservation payments were cited as partial offsets. Officials planned to finalize individual farm allotments by December for year start.

Fire Destroys Barn Near Mt Carroll Farm

Fire of unknown origin last Thursday night razed a large barn two miles west of Mt Carroll owned by Miss Zella Corbett. Loss near 10000 dollars, partially insured, with cattle, hay, oats, and machinery burned. Eleven cows driven out by Marion Ewald with help from neighbor Robert Ritenour. wind kept flames from the house. Corbett, a Mt Carroll high school math instructor, was away visiting.

Three Carroll Students Take Home Ec Work

Carroll county has three students among 622 young women in professional home economics courses at the University of Illinois College of Agriculture. Dorothy Jean Demaree, Thornton Mary Kathryn Miller, Lanark, and Frances May Roske, Mt Carroll, are named. The group forms a dominant professional unit in the 12,000 plus student body, with teaching at high schools as the most common post graduate path and rising demand in commercial fields.

Farm Bureau Nominates New Directors in Carroll County

Township Farm Bureau meetings began as members in Shannon and Cherry Grove townships gathered to nominate directors for the coming year. Rural Red Cross drive raises 116.06 in Carroll townships

Carroll county townships contributed a total of 116.06 to the Red Cross in its first rural call drive. The report by Mrs. W. H. Taylor lists township chairmen and amounts raised, noting chairs secured in most townships and several small or anonymous gifts.

Geiseman Found Insane by Carroll Jury

William Geiseman 61 a Shannon farmer accused of attempting to shoot his son on Oct 31 was found insane by a Carroll county circuit court jury and will be committed to a state institution. He cannot be tried unless sanity returns. The verdict came after he sought to present evidence on a forgery charge. Jurors included George L. Cambman and Gladys Schneider. Judge Leon A. Zick presided.

Shinner Plans for Mid Year Graduates

Mid year high school graduates from twelve midwestern cities will form an experimental group at Fras tes Shiner Junior college Mt. Car vol when the second semester opens June 50, 1940. President Albin C. Bro announces special classes in English biology and possibly language or art to gain a year’s credit in bus semester. The plan aims to have students graduate in three and a half years through extra hours and summer study. Cities include Rockford Moline Peoria Chicago Des Moines Milwaukee Minneapolis and others, with some smaller cities added. The college will work with superintendents and deans to form a nucleus group of outstanding students. Next year admission will open to average students on the same basis. The plan offers social integration and more frequent classes to speed graduation.

No Auto Deaths in Carroll County for November

No automobile fatalities were reported in Carroll County for November, leaving the year’s total at four. Also clear were Whiteside Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties. The four Carroll deaths include Ralph Feimbaugh Chadwick killed Feb 28 from crash injuries, John Tempel Shannon whose car left the highway near Mt Carroll and rolled, Max Emery Savanna killed Oct 7 when his car ran off north of Thomson, and F. Koser Savanna killed Oct 14 when struck by a truck at the Savanna ordnance depot.

Savanna Couple Wed Saturday in Clinton Iowa

Miss Gladys Kane and Keith Wheldon, both of Savanna, were united in marriage Saturday morning in Clinton Iowa. Attendants were Miss Loig Wheldon and Wayne Hartney. After a short wedding trip they’ll live with the bride’s mother in Savanna. The bride, daughter of Mrs Catharine Wurster, is a Savanna High School graduate and worked at Marth’s store. The groom, son of Mrs Cars Wheldon, is a Say pans High School graduate and works as machinist helper at the M railway roundhouse in Savane.

State association lists sites dates for tournaments

Total assessed valuation of railroad property in Carrot county for 1939 is $3,289,176, according to figures received from the state tax commission by the county clerk. This is a decrease of $227,417 from the 1948 total of $3,466,593. The C. B. & Ry. has an assessment of $1,320,525 for 1939 as compared to $1,425,557 in 1935. The Milwaukee has a valuation of $1,918,651 for 1939, as compared to $2,041,096 in 1938.

Regional basketball finals set for Feb 28 in Mt Carroll gym

The Illinois High School Athletic Association announced regional dates and sites for the season. Districts run Feb 21 to 24, regionals Feb 28 to March 2, sectionals March 6 to 9. Mt Carroll hosts a regional with nearby times in Freeport Dixon Rock Island and Rockford area.

Richard Hanna, 15, Milledgeville, pleaded guilty to forgery and was sentenced to one to 20 years in Joliet prison. he forged his father’s name on a $5 check cashed at a Mr. Carroll restaurant and had prior probation for attempted burglary. A will contest filed in Mt Carroll Circuit Court seeks to set aside Sherman Carter’s will, claiming lack of sound mind and undue influence by Minnie Carter. estate to be distributed per law. Organize for Prevention of Rural Fires

An executive committee of 16 from York Salem Mt Carroll Freedom and Woodland townships was elected at Mt Carroll courthouse to advance plans for a rural fire protection organization. The group will form a board of directors and pursue either a tax supported district or a volunteer model. 41 memberships have been paid at 15 dollars each and about 40 more are pledged.
