The Carroll County Barracks No. 2041 Veterans of World War One met at the Savanna American Legion home August 20 with Cmdr. Diffenderfer presiding. They agreed to make the Savanna site the permanent meeting place on the third Sunday of each month at 2 PM and discussed pro veteran legislation and district programs every three months, noting 51 members with two deaths.
Firemen from Thomson Lanark Savanna and Milledgeville assisted Sterling and Roc Falls crews after a truck loaded with 400000 cubic feet of liquid exploded at the National Cylinder Gas Co plant in Sterling. No deaths, three injuries, full containment by noon, with tanks cooled to prevent further blasts.

The Rock Island U S Engineer District warns boaters of a floating rig driving piles to support a pipeline across the Mississippi River at Mile 536.9 between Savanna Illinois and Sabula Iowa starting around Monday August 28 for several days. Exposed pile portions will be marked with lights and buoys and navigators should proceed with caution through the area.

A basement barn on the Floyd Frederick farm southwest of Lanark collapsed Saturday about 1:45 PM. It killed about 28 hogs ready for market and trapped about 100 head under the debris. Neighbors and relatives aided in rescue, with hay and straw piles released and lumber cleared to recover survivors.
Illinois farmers welcome the new Illinois Agricultural Association home office in Bloomington. An open house begins at 9 AM on Farm Bureau Day September 7 with a 10 30 AM band concert by Cerro Gordo, a 1 45 PM dedicatory ceremony, and entertainment from the Bloomington Barbershoppers and a noontime Country Fair broadcast. About 10 000 attendees are expected and Carroll county farm bureau will close Sept 7 for staff to attend.
The Agricultural Extension office in the Farm Bureau building now has a dedicated phone line Mr. Carroll 2862. A new Extension secretary Miss Marjorie Disworth of Mt. Carroll started September 1. The move follows federal rules to separate Extension from Farm Bureau in Illinois. Mr. and Mrs Walter Kness of Grafton Nebraska are visiting relatives locally.
Thomson Lions Club sponsors Melon Day on September 3 and 4 with a big lineup. Committee chairs include Starr Diehl Melton Eslinger Starr Bristol Witt McGinnis. Free watermelons and a WLS stage show are planned along with Starflights and a gymnastic act.

Fred Turner of the Veterans Domiciliary at Clinton Iowa entered a not guilty plea to an operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated charge in Carroll county court. His case was continued to Wednesday after arrest about 4 PM Saturday at Thomson and transport by Deputy Sheriff Howard Gorman.
A 15 year old boy living with parents in Milledgeville was returned by Sheriff Harry Miller after being picked up by Ohio authorities. He had run away from home earlier this month in Fremont Ohio, was briefly taken home, then fled again before Ohio officials recaptured him and the sheriff brought him back.
Joseph Golema, 45, of Chicago failed to appear for a traffic charge hearing and forfeited a $50 bond. The case stems from a claim that he forced Willard Pitts off Route 64 west of Mt. Carroll. Golema was arrested in Oregon and returned to Mt. Carroll where he entered a not guilty plea and reposted bond.

Seventy nine 4 H calves sold at the final day roundup with 56 baby beef calves averaging 26 dollars 75 cents per hundred. Beef production calves lacked early price data. Buyers from Shannon Carroll Feed Service Cherry Brothers Feed Mill and many county firms attended in Mt Carroll Lanark Thomson Milledgeville and surrounding towns.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Smith and Laura Daehler returned Tuesday night from several days visiting relatives in Waterloo Iowa and Spring Valley Minnesota. They saw Will Daehler 91 bedfast a year at the home of Fred and Mrs. Lee. Daehler is well known in Chadwick and has visited there many times.
Miss Grace Oberheim and Miss Frances Warner of Tucson will be dinner guests tonight at the home of Mr and Mrs Donald Smith. The social note notes local hospitality and visiting guests without further details.
The Hartman family reunion met Sunday in Chadwick Village Park with 65 attendees. Oldest member Mrs. Clara Geisz and youngest Darryl Appel were noted, with six births, one marriage, and three deaths reported in the past year. Officers for next year include President Paul Daehler, VP William Gengenbach, Secretary Lila Geisz, and Treasurer Joyce Geisz. Members came from Fox Lake Eureka Savanna Mt. Carroll Chadwick.
The Traum family gathered for their 13th annual reunion at Old Mill Park in Savanna. Conrad Traum, 87, from rural Mt. Carroll, was the oldest, while Rosa Voss, daughter of Mr and Mrs Wm Voss of Morrison, was the youngest. Charles Traum and son Jack traveled from Davis, the farthest distance. No officers are elected. attendees came from Clinton Ia Davis Freeport Fulton Sterling Morrison Mt Carroll Lanark Prophetstown Savanna Chadwick.
Carroll County State's Attorney William B. Petty seeks contempt against Dixon State School superintendent W Karr McKee and two state mental health officials W L Couch and C H Winking. He alleges discriminatory commitment of downstate residents to Dixon and Lincoln State Schools and cites a 1961 Chicago Municipal Court bulletins ruling. The petition asks that Couch Winking and McKee be held in contempt. officials must answer by Sept. 11.
Miss Ardath Flack daughter of Mr and Mrs Leonard Flack Shannon was chosen to represent Carroll county in the 10th annual Illinois 4 H Room Improvement tour in Chicago August 27 28 and 29 Sears Roebuck Foundation through the Illinois 4 H Foundation sponsors this three day trip The tour included visits to the Thorne Rooms at the Art Institute Conrad Hilton hotel Merchandise Mart and American Furniture Mart with shows on carpets furniture bedding and accessories from leading manufacturers representatives The group toured the Sears Roebuck Company furniture division and testing laboratories They were recognized at a luncheon Tuesday in the Merchants and Manufacturers Club at the Merchandise Mart.
4Cs members from Carroll County will tour Shimer College on Friday Sept. 1 visiting lighted campus buildings. Guides from the college staff will explain each building's use. refreshments will follow in Howe Hall lounge. Parking advised at Seminary Ave and Jackson St.

Donald E. Grove of Lanette Route 2 is serving as chief machinist's mate aboard USS Yorktown an anti-submarine warfare aircraft carrier based in Long Beach California. Yorktown will join 20 First Fleet ships Aug 26 departing Hawaii to relieve Seventh Fleet units patrolling the Western and Eastern Pacific ensuring safe Free World trade routes across the vast Pacific.
