Thomson Lions Club plans for Melon Day on Sunday and Labor Day September 3 and 4 with a green watermelon caravan to Fulton and Morrison. Committees include Advertising Diehl, Dance Melton, Tickets Starr, Concessions Bristol, Melons McGinnis. Free watermelons, stage show with Reggie Cross, and the Starflights gymnasts are scheduled. Admission 50 cents, kids free, free parking, two days of rides, games, and a dance finale.

Mr and Mrs Merie Atherton Sr and Mr and Mrs Dwight Atherton visited with Mr and Mrs Harold Tommans in Winslow Sunday. Seaman Sweet of Forreston also visited. Decker and Van Kleek households hosted guests from Thomson and Indiana. a Chicago visitor attended a funeral for John Robbe in Savanna.

The engagement and approaching marriage of Nancy Hornung to Richard V. Ihne are announced by Neue Commander and Mrs Ornung of Munich. Nancy, a Massachusetts native and U S Government employee, and Dick, son of Rev. and Mrs. Albert Ihne of Hampshire Illinois, are both stationed in Munich. The wedding is planned for September 2 1961 in Munich.
Peter Dykstra of Fulton died Monday evening and his body was taken to Sikkema Funeral Home. Funeral services set for 2 p m Thursday at the Christian Reformed church in Fulton with Rev John Meppe officiating and burial in Fulton cemetery. A 1 15 prayer service for relatives will be in the church parlors. Born near Morrison April 14, 1895, he was the son of Jacob and Martie Dykstra and attended Cedar Creek School in Garden Plain Township where he later served as director. He married Jennie Huizenga on February 21, 1917 in Erie and lived in Garden Plain before moving to Fulton. Surviving are his wife two sons Jacob R of Thomson and John P of Fulton two daughters Mrs Robert Brondyke and Mrs Wayne Hook of Fulton eleven grandchildren two great grandchildren one sister Mrs Albert DeVries of Fulton three brothers Joe Jacob J and John K all of Fulton.
Mr and Mrs John Johnson Alberta and Linda return from a two week California tour visiting daughter and son in law Max Smith at Barstow Calico Ghost Town Big Bear Lake and Disneyland. They travel through San Bernardino Beaumont Riverside to Fairfield to see Johnsons sister in law Grace and John Williams and family. They view the Pacific and ships in harbor, recall Thomson schoolmates, then on home stop at Las Vegas Grand Canyon and Boulder Dam.

A-2 Arthur Perry returns from Essex England after two years in the U S Air Force. He plans about 25 days with his grandparents Mr and Mrs Albert Perry and his wife Diana and daughter with Mrs Gertrude Bos in Fulton. He then goes to Detroit Michigan to be stationed at Selfridge Air Force Base.
John Creighton returned home from Trafalgar Indiana after a summer with his brother and sister in law. Multiple families from Fulton Clinton Savanna Galva LaCrosse and Elgin hosted and visited relatives including the Curleys Huggins Atherton and Halfman families. The group attended the state fair in Springfield and shared meals and overnights in various homes.
Local residents hosted and visited family friends from Hanover Chicago Madison Wis Lone Rock and Fair Haven over the weekend and upcoming trips are noted. Western University at Macomb graduate Ray Morelli returned to Thomson after summer study. Several families plan travel to Eunice Texas to visit relatives.
A Saturday evening caravan to Fulton and Morrison promotes Thomson Melon Days. The green watermelon car leads from Lewis' garage at 6 30 p m arriving in Fulton at 7 00 p m and Morrison by 8 00 p m. Organizers urge many cars and riders, with space for children at Lewis garage before departure.

Karen Stiles daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilbur Stiles of Mt Morris and formerly Thom son will study nursing under a three year program at Freeport Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. The grant is funded by the Women of the Moose. the Stiles family belongs to the Savannah Moose Lodge. Karen is a Mt Morris High School 1961 graduate.
Twenty one relatives and friends gathered on Tuesday evening to celebrate Craig McCaughey's 10th birthday. A 6 o'clock birthday dinner followed with three decorated cakes baked by Mrs. Donald Ashby, Mrs. Fay Ashby and Mrs. Hal Ashby.
Infant James Michael Herse is the newborn son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Herse of Thomson. The announcement notes the arrival and family celebration surrounding the birth.

The ill Mrs Rose LaShelle was moved by ambulance Sunday from her home to the residence of her daughter Mrs O S Hansen at 527 Chicago Ave. Several others were treated or hospitalized in Savanna and Clinton in the week. Linda Kohn underwent foot surgery in Savanna hospital after a 2 inch sliver was removed from her foot. Janet Frosch had surgery in Savanna hospital. Mel Ditton was a medical patient in Savanna hospital from Sunday to Wednesday. Mrs Earl Holman of Sabula was a medical patient at Jane Lamb hospital in Clinton. Mrs P K McGinnis and Junior were under doctor care for strep throat last week. Mrs William Adams was taken Friday afternoon to Jane Lamb hospital in Clinton.
Health exams for students entering 1st 5th and 9th grades will be held on September 7 and 8. Mrs Yvonne McGinty has been hired by Thomson Consolidated School District No 174 as secretary of the school and of the board replacing Miss Doris Feldt who has resigned with duties to start in September. The annual J R Elliott reunion was held last Sunday at Old Mill park in Savanna with 30 attending from Farley and Dubuque Iowa Shanahan Malden Thomson Kirkland Princeton and Peru Illinois.
Lions Club holds a special meeting at the grade school at 7 PM and plans regular dinners while Thomson Woman's club schedules its first meeting of the year at the grade school. York Baptist Church Bible classes meet August 30 at the Hoff home in Garden Plain.
The Kindergarten club holds a bake sale on Saturday September 2 starting at 10 AM at McCormick's Cafe. Patrons are invited to support the event.
Mrs. Lloyd Hamilton Jr and Brenda Marie visited her parents Mr and Mrs William Jamm. Merle Bielema and family and Fred Miller visited the Halfman family. Aleta Quam of Rockford stayed with the Kness family in Argo. Dell and Marken families moved and traveled for the Illinois State Fair. The Thomp son and Amy Lewis kin hosted guests from Muskegon and Dubuque with Dina Durward and James Graham joining for meals. Wayne Drake returns from California home visits.
Mr and Mrs Howard Wiebenga of Fulton hosted a Sunday picnic at their home to honor their son Danny who departs for military service. He will report to Great Lakes Chicago for preliminary training and then be reassigned. Attendees included several relatives from Fulton Morrison Davenport Albany Thomson and surrounding areas.
A surprise farewell gathering at the Panacea in Savanna honored Miss Mary Donovan who heads to Baltimore next week to teach. Mrs. Jack Flickinger hosted. twelve friends attended and banco provided the evening’s entertainment.
Wednesday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Marshall included Mr. and Mrs. Roy Heit man and visitors from LaCrosse Wisconsin. Other visits involved Mrs. James Houzenga’s coffee group and several Morrison Fulton Grand Rapids and Savanna residents.
