Babson warns manufacturers nationwide about competition from Africa after his Lobster Company folds despite debts paid. He cites Africa’s natural resources and cheap labor, arguing Africa may influence UN votes and global trade, while praising U S progress on civil rights.
Sheriff Harry Miller responded to a vandalism incident at Chadwick Schoolhouse where a car struck the mailbox in front of the Sherr Correll home. The large package box was damaged while a smaller mail box remained intact, with the post ripping off a car mirror and paint.
The National Farmers Organization set an all-out holding action to begin at midnight August 31 1962 to seek stable farm product prices. More than 20 000 members met in Des Moines Iowa to approve voluntary action with no penalties for nonparticipants. Milk sales were not included due to perishability.
Congressman Anderson announces applications for candidacy to the United States Naval Air Force and Merchant Marine Academies for the class entering in 1963. Letters of interest must reach his Washington office by October 1. Eligible applicants are 18 to 22, single, and high school graduates with full name date of birth and brief background in their letter.
Roger Lee Port son of Mr and Mrs Richard Port Chadwick received the showmanship award at the Carroll County 4 H Roundup baby beef exhibit. He earned first and second place with his purebred Angus heifers and received a cup from the Shannon Lions Club on Wednesday evening at Savanna.
Mr and Mrs Frank Mest from Lowell and Julie spent the weekend in Wisconsin Dells enjoying leisure time arrays of local sights and attractions.
Courthouse News notes that Saturday September 1 is the final day to pay the second installment of real estate taxes without penalty. Deputy Guy Neuschwanger held the sheriff's office by himself Tuesday afternoon as Sheriff Harry Miller was absent for a mental health placement and Chief Deputy Howard Gorman remained hospitalized for surgery.

Mount Carroll hosts the 3rd annual Sidewalk Day on Saturday September 8 with merchants offering bargain merchandise in front of stores. A penny scramble starts at 2 p m with seven thousand five hundred pennies mixed with corn cobs spread across the street. participants keep what they find. A merchandise certificate drawing follows at 8 p m with redemption required that night.
Han Del's Major Patton a Shetland stallion by David Thorngren Milledgeville won grand champion in the pony show at Carroll 4-H Roundup last week. The three year old stallion also took first in stallion halter and first in fine harness while Thorngren a Happy Hoofs 4-H club member earned the senior showmanship award.
Irvin C. Isgrig files objections to Boyce Hall’s nominating papers for county treasurer alleging improper signatures and misstatements. Hearing set for Friday in Mt. Carroll with County Judge Turnbaugh and state and county officials presiding.
Mr and Mrs Bernard Ben Manning of Polo celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with a Nuptial Anniversary High Mass at St Marys Polo 10 30 am followed by an open house and evening dance. The couple married Sept 10 1912 in Nebraska and farmed in Carroll county before moving to Polo in 1956. They have 11 children 31 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Mrs Maxine Polhill of Milledgeville named co chairwoman of the 16th Congressional District by Stanley H Guyer. She shares the post with Mrs Maude Tear of Galena who was appointed in 1950. Polhill heads decorations for the Republican rally and picnic at Oregon on September 8.

Funeral services for Philip K Lang 72 native of Chadwick area who died August 22 were held at 2 p m Friday in Frank Funeral Home. The Rev Rodney Warstler officiated with Darla Schreiner organist. Burial was in Chadwick cemetery. Pallbearers were Ray Brandenburg Fenton Pratt Wilbur Rodermel Gene Wolf Marvin Muller and Delmar Lang. He was born December 9 1889 in Fair Haven township son of George and unknown mother. He farmed with brother Clarence before moving to Chadwick. Death from heart attack. Survived by brother Clarence of Polo and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by parents and brothers George and Louis.
Kenneth Naffziger, former Chadwick high coach, takes athletic director and basketball coach post at a Fergus Falls high school Minnesota for the coming year. The family resides at 414 E Cherry Fergus Falls, having lived in Fox Lake Illinois while he pursued a master's degree during summers.
James Whitney 44 of Hinckley disappeared while fishing along Route 80 north of the Savanna Sabula bridge on Saturday night. Authorities dragged a 30 foot deep Mississippi River stretch near the steep bank but found no body by Monday morning. his wife reported the disappearance.
Three young Carroll county residents were injured when their car struck the side of a Burlington freight train crossing Ayres crossing on Route 80. Gary Handel of Chadwick the driver JoElla Spanogle of Mt. Carroll and Frances Frankenburger of Savanna were treated at Savanna City hospital for facial lacerations bruises and a dislocated hip. Handel said the warning signal flashed too late. The car was turned and halted along the track after impact as the train stopped.
The Farm and Home Science Show will be held at the University of Illinois College of Agriculture on Friday and Saturday September 7 and 8. Demonstrations and exhibits will be at eight centers including beef and dairy cattle farms and the agronomy south farm with highlights on corn tillage, harvesting machinery, precast concrete structures, an automatic beef feeder and a pneumatic feed system. Overnight accommodations and meals are available on campus. Carroll County farm families are urged to attend. contact the Farm or Home Advisor's office. Mrs Lillian Stoner of Sterling visited the Reiffs Sunday.
An All-Star game features players from Carroll county Small Fry leagues. Six PM Saturday September 1 at Thomson school diamond. Five players chosen from each of Shannon Chadwick Thomson and Mill edgeville’s two teams split into two squads for the exhibition.
Thomson Lions Club hosts a two day Melon Days on September 2 and 3 at the school ballfield. Free stage shows start at 2 and 8 PM with acts including Bob and Bobbie Roscos Clinton Drum and Bugle Corps and Red Blanchard. Watermelons rides and Little League games accompany the festivities.
Mrs Anna Burns Tipton aged 83 died at 4 a m Monday in St Francis Hospital Freeport after a fall at the Caroline Mar Home where she had resided. Born November 14 1879 in New York state she came to Mount Carroll at age 10 as an orphan and was later adopted by Mrs Caroline Mark. Surviving are two sons David B Tipton of Chicago and William R Tipton Jr of Mount Carroll and several nephews. Burial followed in Oak Hill cemetery with funeral at 2 p m Tuesday conducted by Pastor James M Green.
A total of 77 baby beef calves were sold Wednesday afternoon August 22 at the 4-H Roundup auction. The average price was 28.06 per hundred with Le Roy Appel achieving the high sale at 35.00 for Farmers State Bank of Chadwick. Purchasers spanned Mount Carroll Shannon Lanark Milledgeville Thomson Savanna and more including Carroll Service Company Miller’s Thermo-Gas Service and National Bank of Savanna among others.

Carroll County Homemakers Extension Association units resume monthly meetings in September hosting a five part symposium on Our Organization. The program covers Cooperative Extension Service, association work, program planning, state national and international groups, and member participation and finance with five unit officers presenting.
The 29th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Orval Rahn was celebrated Sunday with a Monday gathering at the Rahn home west of Chadwick. A family gift was given and refreshments served. Attendees included Herbert Law and wife of Thomson, John Janssen and family of Milledgeville, Arvin Knutts and son Terry, and Kenneth Rahn and spouse.
