Three Teachers Hired for Grade School in 1962

Thomson Community School Dist No 174 held two Aug 1962 special sessions to hire staff. John P Krebs was offered a teaching coaching contract for 4500 dollars for 1962-63, Dorothy Floyd approved as first grade teacher at 4500 dollars, and later contracts and a fifth grade position were approved including Tile House of Fulton for a room upgrade at 575 dollars and Helen S Whitney at 3900 dollars for 62-63.

Grass Fire Reported Near Curley Farm North Of Town

Thomson firemen were called to a grass fire along the railroad near the Curley farm north of town about 2 p m today. Mrs. John Atherton notified firemen and Savanna reported it minutes later. Before the truck returned another report came of a fire near the Bud Wilt home.

Local Teacher Ray Barrett Joins Thomson High School

Ray Barrett of 104 North Ward Macomb Illinois has been employed by Thomson High School as a high school math teacher starting September 4 1962. Dr A Wayne Randolph head of the Bureau of Occupational Information and Placements WIU says the student will graduate from WIU in August.

North Mr. and Mrs. Archie Green and grandson Pat Green return from a 10 day trip. They visited relatives in Superior Wisconsin and Mrs. Jennie French of Clinton. Mr. and Mrs. William Schwartz and Claudia of Charles City Iowa joined in Spooner Wisconsin for cabins and fishing in cold weather.

Awards at Illinois State Fair Highlight 4-H Winners

Dawn Gifford and Ardath Flacks led 4-H entries with A ratings for fashion and crafts. Dawn’s light blue chiffon party dress and Ardath’s harmonizing brown outfit earned top marks, while Helen Merkel’s fringed table cover and napkins also rated well. Death comes to John R. Brown longtime WLS figure

John R. Brown, longtime WLS musician and ore player at the Barn Dance, died June 23 at his Adrian Michigan home after a short illness. He is survived by his widow Juanita and two daughters. His passing follows the death of Grace Wilson, also known to WLS fans.

Dina Durward Graduates From St Joseph Mercy Nursing

Miss Dina Durward daughter of Mr and Mrs Leslie Durward of Argo Fay graduated from St Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque Iowa on Sunday. The cap and ceremony were at 10 30 am followed by a baccalaureate mass at Sacred Heart Chapel. A noon brunch for graduates parents and friends was held in the hospital social dining room and at 2 pm the commencement exercises and diploma distribution occurred.

Hoffs Vacation in Western States

Mr and Mrs Francis Hoff with Ruth and Nadine returned last Thursday from a two week trip visiting family across Minnesota California and Arizona. They opened in St Louis Park and traveled through the Bad Lands and Black Hills to see Rushmore then to Lodi to visit Mrs Truman Sabine and relatives. Four days were spent in Arlington followed by Tucson calls on Dan Sack Floyd Tobey before returning home.
