New Jury List Planned Under State Law Reforms

Carrell county supervisors must by Sept 12 prepare lists of qualified citizens from each township for the first jury list under the new law allowing women to serve. Each township submits about 10 percent of those who voted last election, names recorded on cards in the clerk’s secure box. The board will approve the list in September, replace the existing list, and later draw 35 jurors under the direction of the county judge and clerk with the circuit clerk blindfolded.

Savanna Man Injured in Head On Crash Friday

W. E. D. Moore of Savanna suffered a severe forehead gash and a badly bruised knee after being thrown through the windshield when the car he sat in collided head on with a vehicle driven by Glenn Anderson of Savanna on Route 80 about three miles south of Savanna. Anderson was uninjured and was reportedly trying to locate a burning cigarette.

Woman Hurt Near Mount Carmel Home

Miss Myre Zook of Mount Carmel, a walker south of Chadwick, suffered a fractured skull and injuries after being struck by a car on a sidewalk. Driver William Doesther stopped, alerted authorities, and reported he was on the road’s right side when the woman stepped into his path. The accident occurred as he neared a hill. the injured woman, very deaf, may not have heard the car approaching. She was taken to Sterling hospital.

County corn crop near record size in Illinois report

U S department of agriculture shows Illinois corn conditions August 1 at 98 percent of normal in most counties, Whiteside at 99 percent, with 100 percent in nine counties. Statewide crop prospects appear the best in 44 years, with average yield around 48 bushels per acre and total production around 388 million bushels. Soybeans show improvement, winter wheat yields up, and oats, rye, and barley near ten year averages.

Lanark Man Attacked by Bull Near Freeport Farm

Herman Penning of Lanark narrowly escaped serious injury Monday morning when a bull at the Richard Searing farm six miles south of Freeport charged him while he was working an oil prospecting drill. He was knocked down, pinned, and then freed after twisting the bull’s nose ring and beating it with a stick, resulting in minor scratches and bruises.

The 69th Whiteside County Fair at Morrison begins next Tuesday, offering the largest and most varied farm and home exhibits with over 10,000 in premiums. Death row inmate John Collins ill with influenza in Joliet prison

John Collins 17, awaiting execution for the Mt Carroll payroll murder, contracted influenza while in death row at Joliet. Officials converted a death cell into a hospital as guards kept watch. His 14 year old brother Clarence already jailed for the same crime received a 20 year sentence. A separate note mentions a Cimarron District gold field development near Goldfield and Tonopah.

Arrangements set for the training ship of the 31st Organized Division of the United States Naval Reserve to visit Savanna on a weekend cruise. Jewelry theft prompts six-city police search

Mr and Mrs C G C Mullen of Savanna reported a jewelry loss after returning from Canada. Police in Savanna and authorities in Dubuque Clinton Davenport Freeport Rockford and Chicago were asked to check lawn shops for the missing pieces, including a 76 point diamond set and a diamond watch. Additional clothing items were found missing during follow up. The jewelry had been taken from a jewel box in a bedroom dresser drawer.

A new post office opened this Monday at the Savanna Ordnance Depot north of Savanna. Mail to and from the depot will be handled there instead of via the Sayantina post office. Mrs. Lewis Fosdick named postmistress of the Savanna Ordnance Depot, Proving Ground.

Savanna Opens New Tennis Courts With Exhibition Matches

A large crowd attended the opening event at Old Mill Park Savanna as the west court hosted exhibition matches including a mixed doubles pairing Savanna and Mt Carroll. O Hansen, park board president, spoke after four Morrison visitors were introduced. Rendall and son played doubles against Savanna’s Ferguson and Yachik, winning six to three.
