County reports to the board of review show 5,319 horses on farms, 157 fewer than 1927, with auto toll rising to 3,411 vehicles and 476 trucks. Cattle total 29,445 head, hogs 20,856, sheep and goats 4,678, with varying township valuations and averages for tax purposes.

No Vote on Corn Quotas to Be Held

Federal farm officials and Secretary Henry Wallace say no referendum on corn marketing quotas will occur this fall. The August crop forecast places 1938 corn yield at 2.566 billion bushels with a 320 million bushel carryover, short of the quota-triggering excess supply level, delaying any vote in the corn belt.

Rain Halts Threshing As Floods Sweep County

Heavy rains across the county halted threshing on Monday and sent Plum river and Waukarusa creek out of their banks. Mt Carroll and surroundingLowland areas flooded, with Point Rock park and Mill street submerged. Totals show 5.02 inches in 30 hours and 5.83 inches for the first 15 days of August, followed by relief as fair weather returned Wednesday.

Four Injured Near Shannon In Auto Accidents

Four people were injured near Shannon last Thursday in auto accidents and a runaway. Joe Bakker of two miles southeast of Lannon suffered a compound fracture of the left leg and shock when a team of horses ran away with an oars wagon. Frank Spengler, a Shannon Telephone lineman, and Joe Brooks collided at a dirt road intersection four miles southeast of Shannon. Spengler sustained a double fracture of the right forearm. his wife Clara and son Elwyn had scratches. Brooks and his family escaped serious injuries. both cars were drivable home.

Lanark 4-H Team Heads to State Fair

Lanark 4-H demonstration team members Robert Guenzler and Donald Kaney represent Carroll County at the state fair. The pair won first place for Prevention of Loss in Livestock Marketing, leading a county contest in which other teams drew for placements. Savanna Boys Recap Boy State Experiences in Lanark

Four Savanna youths who attended Boy State at Springfield shared their reports before the Carroll County American Legion Council in Lanark. Speakers included Edward Shafer, Robert Myers, William Plattenberger, and Robert Hale, with topics ranging from bar racks routines to state capital highlights and Lincoln memorials. The meeting, led by County Commander Roswell Packard, featured Rev. E. Y. Knapp’s Americanism address and officials from Lanark, Mt. Carroll, Savanna, and Shannon.
