Lanark Mourns Two In Fatal Crossing Crash
Two Polo men Gerald Stevenberg 39 and Paul Hoffman 25 were killed when their station wagon was struck on a grade crossing by a Milwaukee Road passenger train west of Lanark. The accident occurred as the wagon crossed tracks, the engine torn free and the car crushed against the locomotive. An inquest found accidental death. Stevenberg, World War II veteran, survived by his mother and several siblings. Hoffman, a Korean War veteran, is survived by his mother Naomi Hoffman and other relatives. Funeral services were held in Polo with burial at Fairmount cemetery and El Hil cemetery at Dixon respectively. The train was traveling over 80 miles per hour. witnesses were train crew and engineer. Sheriff Harry Miller reported the scene.

Bonds Sold to Finance Clinton Bridge Project
Revenue bonds totaling 6.8 million dollars were sold last Thursday to a Chicago led syndicate headed by John Nuveen & Co. to finance a new bridge across the Mississippi at Clinton. The bid called for 3.999 percent interest with a premium of 541.25 dollars. Only one other bid was received.

Evanston resident Norman of Evanston Ill was hospitalized in Freeport July 28 after a Route 64 crash four miles west of Mt Carroll. A northbound semi edged right on a narrow bridge, struck the bridge end, and lost control, swerving into Norman’s eastbound auto.
